Hey ladies,
I had a midwife appointment yesterday and found that bubs has shifted since my last appointment into a posterior position (facing out). My midwife gave me a fact sheet of exercises to do and ways to sit etc.
But... How do I know if I have managed to turn the baby? What should I be feeling for? The placenta is anterior which makes it a bit difficult to feel for the baby's back against my stomach. I have started to do some of the "on all fours" exercises and when I get up I feel all front heavy and very off balance - does this mean bubs has shifted already?

Also - I keep feeling a "hitting" sensation in what I think is the recess of my left hip bone and at the same time I feel bubs stretch out towards the upper right hand ribs. I'm wondering if this baby is as smart as it's mum and thinks the hip is the way to the cervix? Either that or it's definitely a bloke and won't ask for directions

Hi
My bubs has just started getting the hiccups, and I wondered if his head was were the hiccups were comming from. I asked the midwife where he was last time I was there and she confirmed that his head was exactly where I thought it was. As Im writing this i realise it doesnt help much as to whether your baby is facing the front or not but its helpful in determininging whether they are head down or not, I think. Mine is currently head down but sideways. I dont think its worth worrying about too much yet as he is moving heaps.

Jess, our dates are almost the same... what are you feeling for? arms? legs? I can't feel much other than hard "masses" which I thought was bubs' back!

I remember something from antenatal classes last year - there is a maternity stool that you can hire that you sit on that helps convince bubs to move. Phone your hospital or ask the midwife if she knows about it? Alternatively - and cheaply, sitting wrong way round - facing the back - of a normal table chair and leaning forwars is supposed to help. All of the stuff below was on the cheat sheet for the session....

    * Avoid positions which encourage your baby to face your tummy. The main culprits are said to be lolling back in armchairs, sitting in car seats where you are leaning back, or anything where your knees are higher than your pelvis.

    * Watch television while kneeling on the floor, over a beanbag or cushions, or sit on a dining chair. Try sitting on a dining chair facing the back as well.

    * Don't cross your legs. This reduces the space at the front of the pelvis and opens it up at the back. For good positioning, the baby needs to have lots of space at the front.

    * Don't put your feet up. Lying back with your feet up encourages posterior presentation.

    * Sleep on your side, not on your back.

    * Avoid deep squatting, which opens up the pelvis and encourages the baby to move down, until you know he or she is facing the right way.

I wouldn't worry too much about being able to feel if it has worked as some babies don't move and settle into this position until 35-37th weeks and you can get your midwife to check at that stage. I still can't remember feeling anything other than masses of baby - it amazes me when women can tell if it is a foot, head or hand!

Maya was posterior up until 38 weeks when she decided to turn, which started off labour (I think she booted the mucouse plug out lol) and she was born a couple pf days later. Some babies are even born posterior and it's not too much of a worry, although most turn before/during labour.

I tried all the exercises and stuff, particularly leaning over a beanbag when I was watching TV and stuff (kneeling over it on th efloor). I also noticed that my tummy had a kink in the middle, wasn't completely round, which is apparently because the curve of her spine (which helps make the nice ball shape) was against mine) and her bumpy knobbly knees and head were poking out the bump side making it a funny shape.
