When you view a webpage, a copy is downloaded to your computer's cache.) The bigger issue is guilt upon accusation. EVEN if you're innocent, you can be accused of something and have your internet connection cut (or your favourite website taken down). This is about the basis of our law: innocent until proven guilty and a fair trial. -------------

| On a side topic, I read an article today that says when you joined Facebook you gave them copyright of anything you add to the site. So they are able to use any photographs or videos that you put on there however they wish and don't have to get your permission or pay you for it. |

Yip, that is true about facebook. Most photosharing sites are the same e.g photobucket.
The biggest issue with facebook is that you actually can not delete your profile either as it remains their property. -------------

I really don't like that, imagine all the images that they could use of people. you set your account to private, thinking only your friends will see your pictures yet they could plaster them all over the internet if they wished

Don't get paranoid about the Facebook rumours people...go in and read the Terms and conditions for yourself and you will find this:

hmmm.... this is the first time I've heard of this. I could be missing something, but it looks to me like its being blown up totally out of proportion. I just went and read Section 92a on the http://www.legislation.govt.nz/act/public/2008/0027/latest/DLM1122643.html - Legislation website and it seems fairly reasonable. What it says is that ISPs must have a policy for terminating the accounts in appropriate circumstances of people who repeatedly infringe copyright. It doesn't say anywhere that they have to do it on an accustaion only, but telstraclear have apparently come out and said that they will do it on an accusation only and have been since Nov 2008 because its easier to just terminate the account than it is to investigate.
besides - what purpose will it serve to blackout your own stuff. It's a form of protest. People are only doing it until the end of the week. The stuff about FB property ownership is a bit of a side-topic. It has nothing to do with the blackout movement. ETA while my daughter is behaving (which won't be long lol) : The thing is because the copyright amendment requires ISP's to terminate accounts the burden of proof will be shifted to the user because let's face it, what business has time to accumulate a case against individuals. The issue isn't the amendment itself but the logical conclusion of it which is that the user becomes guilty without trial. It is essentially enabling the removal of a basic modern human right - internet access - while demonstrating a very poor understanding of how the internet actually works. I don't have an issue with people who are infringing copyright being prosecuted but I don't believe that this amendment is the way to do it. It's like driftnet fishing for internet pirates (excuse the pun) -------------
