I need some advice please.
DD is 2 weeks old. I have an abundant milk supply and exclusivly breastfeeding.
Last night I went to bed with an extremely sore breast and had fever/chills. DD woke at 3am and I fed her off the sore breast and it felt better. I have been feeding her every 2 hours from sore breast first and using heat/massage towards the nipple. I am confused as I cannot feel a hard lump which I have read would indicate blocked duct or mastitis. The breast feels soft but is still very tender.
I live overseas and the doctor is not easily available although I do have one.
What shall I do. Shall I wait it out for a day or two and see if it gets better on its own or see the doctor, keeping in mind that its snowing, I have a 2 week old newborn and no vehicle.
Do you think it could be mastitis? or am I overreacting?

It does sounds like mastitis hun and you probably need antibiotics? How you feeling this morning?
You're doing the right thing though, maybe it will correct itself, but if you show any signs of getting worse i'd go the Dr's.
Whens the MW wife coming to see you again? Maybe she could prescribe something?

Take some vitamin C if you can get/have some this will help regardless of wether its mastitis or not. Take a decent dose 3 times throughout the day it is good for baby too.

If you have an anitinflamatories they will help if it is mastitis. I know that Iboprofen is definately safe to take while breast feeding. I don't know if you can get any but cabbage leaves work a treat as well. If you use cabbage leaves you must only use them a maximum of 3 times a day and for no more than 15ish minutes at a time otherwise they will dry up your milk. Don't put them over your nipple either.
Its good you are feeding as often as you can off the sore breast but don't neglect the other one as you might get mastitis there as well. If you only want to feed off the sore one then perhaps you could express the milk off the other.
If you feel like you have the flu then it is most likely mastitis and you will need to go to the doctor.
I hope you are feeling better soon.

Sounds like when I had mastitis. Take Panodol to help keep the fever down, do exactly what you are doing and as HeidisMum said take Vit C, my mw told me to take the 1000mg ones if you can.

Can you at least call the doc and talk to them about it? My fever wouldn't go down even with antibiotics so I had to have IV antibiotics at the Hospital for 2 nights. Best if you can get rid of it before you get to this stage

I would ring the doc, if mastitis really takes hold you will end up in hospital on IV antibiotics which you really don't want and you would be surprised how quickly it can escalate. You are doing all the right things though and just in case you don't know already you can take paracetamol and nurofen together, one will help with the fever and the other with the inflammation.

Out of interest, where are you living?

Thanks for all of your advice. I'm feeling better but breast is very red and sore so am heading to doc this morning as I dont want it to get any worse.

Cuppatea, Im in midwest USA. Any other time of year it would be easy to get to doc but the weather here is shocking at the moment.

I will let you know how I get on.

Thanks again!!!
