We are hoping that we might be able to go away on a family holiday sometime this year (we are overdue and somewhat cranky!) and I am keen for any good ideas! We would be on a lowish budget though. Our tent is far too little for six of us so cabins or just better would probably be the limit, for perhaps two nights, and it needs to be in the North Island.

Fire away!

My parents have commented that http://www.oruabay.co.nz/index.html - Orua Bay is lovely. I beleive that it is quite safe for kids. The cabins there are pretty much like motel units but can't be called a motel as you need to take your own linen.

I can't think of anywhere else that has cabins

Have you checked out these websites?

http://www.jasons.com/New-Zealand/camping-holiday-parks/ - Jasons - Holiday Parks etc

Or

http://bookabach.co.nz/ - Book A Bach

What about Taupo, Rotorua, Hawkes Bay or even Bay of Plenty?

Have fun planning

We used to stay at Omokoroa camping ground which is between Tauranga and Waihi when our kids were little and there was a family that rented a cabin that accommodated their family of mum, dad, triplets & a couple of singletons I think. I don't know if it was expensive but could be worth checking out as the camping ground was cosy and well kept with a great kids play area and three heated pools. The beach is also beautiful and safe with trees shading the sand and nice and safe for swimming.

Might be a bit further than you want to travel depending on where you are?

What about Raglan - cute little place the camping ground has cabins on site. Once in Raglan you wouldn't really need to drive as you can just walk across to town - its got some cute little shops, cafes and its a short drive (probably 40 mins from Hamilton).

There's always Hawkes Bay, splash planet, the aquarium, there are cabins at Kennedy Park in Napier if you don't want to pack a tent.

have a look at renting bachcare.co.nz. We just recently stayed in Coromandel with 6 adults and 2 wee ones and found it was way cheaper to rent a bach than use cabins at the campground for the week. You have to take own linen but it was a great set up.
