i need one....i have a 40% assignement due 15 days after my due date so being particularly geeky and starting it now. lol. basically i need a controversial topic, so i can find an article about it and pull it apart for my 'critical thinking' paper. my degree is in biomedical science so i thought something health or med related would be cool but i cant think of a topic. any ideas or has anything seen something recently thats a bit controversial or seems to be quite conspiracy theoryish? any ideas would be awesome!!! -------------

yea stem cell is one i did think of, just need to do some research on it. i wanna try and stay away from babies or fertility as a topic just because im pregnant and i dont want my tutor to think i have any biased towards one opinion cos i probably would. lol. i was thinking something along the lines of cancer cure/treatments in older people. when does the line get drawn on who is too old to be given another chance but suprisingly cant find much on it. or at least can get my words in the right order for google to want to help me. -------------

If you're going that route, how about euthanasia?
*edit to add examples.. Elderly or young with terminal illnesses. Or middle aged people with alzheimers? Where do you draw the line between quality or quantity of life? Is it worth prolonging someones life just to see/let them deteriorate. -------------

*Lurking* just stumbled across the thread seeing what everybody is up to. *Waves* I like Mama Pickles idea, euthenasia is still a widely debated topic, also liked your idea about middle aged with alzheimers etc. These subjects stir up alot of info and obviously there would be a lot of material and research done into stem research etc. Not sure if you remember but there was a lady (2004 Willie Terpstra who went over to China for a contraversial stem cell transplant - she had MND Motor Nuerone Disease), there was some signs of improvement but she then died. MND is a good one as far as euthanasia is concerned. Also what is the difference between having a living will versus getting someone to take away your pain (ie euthansia). A living will can tell doctors no resucitation, no drugs to keep you living etc or drugs to prolong your life if you have complications from any disease whether it be cancer or what. I guess this is just something that is close to my heart really seeing my Mother suffer terribly from MND and as much as I wanted her to stay alive for as long as possible, it was cruel, people put down dogs for much less. Sorry if it sounds all dramatic etc but it would make for a very good paper and one to really get the brain thinking.

If you are looking at going down the cancer way, maybe something like the "cancer gene". Is it actually true??? ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

Could do it on how medical schools aren't allowed to teach natural medicines as they lose their funding from big Pharma, cause big Pharma only interested in Big money.

wow full on, so much stuff out there. ive lost my mum, nana and grandad all within 3 years to cancer so i might look into the whole cancer gene thing. im really not good at critical thinking, i beleive what im told which is why i decided to do this paper but man its gonna be hard. im so not a conspiricy kinda girl -------------

Mon- as a fellow uni student at Vic (and in the same predicament as you re: a huge assignment due AFTER bubba's born lol), I would try to help but my area of 'expertise' is religion and humanities lol. Remember though, with the essays it's almost less what the topic is about than how you argue your point. Agreed, it *does* have to be be controversial to the point that not everyone would agree with you (ie pointless arguing that the sky is blue as everyone knows that).....but topics like euthanasia for instance, while sooooooo interesting to read about, are HUGE and IMO can't be discussed comfortably in anything less than thesis size lol. Medical schools aren't allowed to teach natural medicine because there isn't enough scientific research to prove that any of it works, not because they lose their funding.

Whoever finds a true cure for cancer stands to make billions and billions of dollars- far more money than is already spent on research and more money than is made from the current anti-cancer drugs. If there was such a thing that really worked, one of the big pharmaceutical giants would be on it like a flash, developing it, patenting it, and marketing it because it would make them ALOT of money. I can't believe people believe all this conspiracy stuff about cancer just from a few articles in newspapers. Journalists are supposed to cause you to think critically- its their jobs to present controversial topics and represent both sides. You should never believe everything you read in the papers, because newspapers are ALSO big, corporate money-making businesses. What about that boy who committed suicide and his mother is suing the hospital becaue they told him it was ok to get drunk on anti depressants or something similar? Toran I think his name was? Along the euthansia line, should drug addicts be given organ transplants......
The "where do we draw the line" question in medicine is an extremely controversial one IMO. What a great paper, I would love do something like that. -------------
