For those that had a baby shower for their FIRST baby, can you tell me what was your favourite gift, whether it was because it was useful, or it was just your taste and it fitted your style?
The showers I've been too, I tend to buy the essentials, you know the wipes, baby wash, bibs, wash cloths, bottle brush and the like, sometimes a AIO as well. I think because I know these things will get used, and are great to stock up on. But they are a reasonably boring gift, right?
I have a baby shower in 2 weeks to go to for a first time mum, and don't know what to get her! I know she needs pretty much everything, but I'm sort of over doing the boring gift thing. And being that my baby shower was 6 years ago, I can't remember what gift/s stood out to me.
Any ideas or input will be appreciated!

I never got given a baby shower, mostly because I was on my own and I guess family didn't want to celebrate a baby that wasn't 'planned' or being had out of wedlock.
Anyhoo my cousin just had her baby shower a couple weeks back, I couldn't believe the presents she was given. It was seriously ridiculous, we're talking Bumbo, Fancy Bassinette, Pram, those expensive playgyms, baby clothes left right and centre ...jolly jumper etc etc! She didn't even really seem to appreciate the stuff or realize just how much she'd had spent on her.
I gave her a kiwiana baby sling, I knew it was something she really wanted and something that I would have loved to receive if I had of been thrown a baby shower, you can use them right up to 2 yo (depending on size of baby). All diff positions etc. You can get all diff brands on TM for prices ranging from $30 up to $60 for a decent one.

My fave gift was a rear facing baby mirror by pitta patta. It looks like a dragon and is brightly coloured with a big mirror in the middle. I can see DD just by looking in my rear vision mirror or turning around to look. She seems to love it too. I have seen them at baby city recently

I had a small baby shower when I was pregnant with Janaya. Me and my friends were so young back then, I think the only decent thing I got was a packet of nappies
When I was pregnant with Jackson, a lady I worked with gave me a wee basket with some lavender stuff for me, and a few little baby things. Was really sweet.
But anyway, could you make her something? What about something like the Baby Bouquet Daizy made the other day? I would love something like that personally.
Do you know what shes having? Or what shes calling it?

Snap Kylie!
I had a baby shower to go to the other day and was so sick of giving the same old booring gift, however useful it mey be.
In the end I made up a baby bouquet with some singlets, cloths, hats etc. I was pretty impressed with it and the friend I gave it to loved it!
I think the thread is a few pages back, or you can just search baby bouquet on marthstewart.com
I cant even remember any of my gifts from baby showers, everything was pretty standard, clothes, nappies, bath washes...

I wish I had talent in the crafty area, but sadly I don't . The best I can do is wrap presents. She didn't find out the gender of baby, and I'm not close enough to her to ask what names she has in mind, so can't do anything that personal.
Thanks for some of your suggestions ladies!
And buzzybee, I'm jealous of the pressies your cousin got! Those things are expensive!! I think the most expensive thing I could've got at my baby shower was a bouncer. Which is a great present to get.

my favorite gift was a mother baby bath-set with lovely soaps and bathsalts and lotions, though I'm not due until the end of April so I may find other gifts more usefull but the bath-salts are a winner for now it's nice to feel a little pampered

Daizy, did you take a photo of the baby bouquet you did? If you can give me some tips with how you made it, I'll give it a go!

My best gift was a pack of singlets. Mostly because baby was born in summer and also because we didn't have a whole lot of money - but suddenly in that one gift, I had a lot of things for baby to wear.
This time around - earrings for me (from my boss) and a colourful changetable mobile.

I feel terrible - I've already forgotten most of my baby shower gifts
We had already bought most of the big stuff other than cot and stroller, but everything else "exciting" IYGWIM. My favourite pressie was a "Cat in the Hat" AIO and the book to go with it. Favourite because my friend who gave it to me obviously knows me well - I LOVE books and love receiving them as gifts and loved that my baby was already growing his library!
Practical stuff we received: a couple of swaddle me blankets, disposable maternity knickers (lol), cot mobile and a fisher price rocker which I don't recommend but probably only coz Callum is STILL too small to sit in it and tomorrow I am going to go buy the Baby Bjorn bouncer that I wanted all along
I went to a baby shower last week and gave my friend a book of Singapore children's stories and bunch of "practical" stuff.

I never had a baby shower but when I go to one for a first time mum I like to give things that I found essential. Then when the baby comes I give something nice, a toy or some clothing. I went to one for a very close friend on Saturday and I gave her a mum2mum burp cloth, weleda colic powder with a muchkin, purelan, a dangly toy, a pack of huggies newborn nappies and huggies extra sensative wipes and some bibs and 3 wraps. I put it all in a pretty box with a big bow surrounded by nice tissue paper and had little heart shaped notes with explaination for things like the colic powder, purelan and muchkin. It look really pretty and she loved it.

Aah BuzzyBee, that makes me sad! They should have celebrated your baby, its a blessing!
My favourites were a sling, a birth ball and a feeding cushion and a bath thermometer. Used them all loads (the cushion helped me sleep in the last few weeks cause it propped me up nicely, and the thermometer still gets used cause I love my baths HOT so have no perspective on what temp is right for baby)

A friend of mine from Oz got the girls these lovely silver bangles from Michael Hill it was such a sweet gift and the girls really suit them.
Also my favourite Aunty had kept one of my baby gowns and gave it to me as a present. It was a really thoughtful and creative gift. Its just a shame there wasn't 2 I would love the girls to wear it but I feel bad that they have to share it between the 2 of them. She also had all these painting I had done for her from the ages of 2-5. Very funny.

I had a baby shower for Tom and got all sorts of things (clothes etc). the best/ most used are Hairy Maclary from Donaldson dairy book, Baby faces rattle book and a sheepskin rug. We use all 3 of those still to this day...every day and they are heading towards James (except the sheepskin...I want to get him his own)

I only had a small baby shower, but the best gift I got was a tree!! It's a hazel tree, soCian's celtic "birth tree" and I loved it so much that I was straight off to the garden centre when my sister-in-law had her baby - incidentally, she loved her tree too!

My best gift was the AWW Party Cakes cookbook. I will use it for years and years, way beyond babyhood. It comes out regularly so we can think about what cake we will make for the next birthday - months and months in advance!

I always try and buy something they wouldn't normally buy for themselves, boutiquey stuff like Dimples booties, Mokopuna stuff, Nature Baby stuff etc. I mean, most people wouldn't spend $30 on a baby hat or $45 on an outfit for themselves, but it's nice to be given stuff like that.
