Ava is 6 months old on friday. :D

What sort of solids can i introduce?

Also, in my plunket book it says she can have brocolli and cauliflower - how do i prepare it for her?

When should i start her on follow up formula?

At 6 months she will still need purreed food so either boil or stem the vege until they are soft and then using some of the vege water puree them. I found that Dom wasn't keen on broc and cauli by themselves so I used to mix it with other veges like pumpkin or kumara.
We have never used follow on formula, Just weaning from first formula to cows milk now.

Is Ava already on solids or just beginning?

If she's just beginning, rice cereal (eg farex)is normally the first food. Then afte a few days of that I'd boil up some pumpkin or kumara or carrot or pear or apple and push it through a sieve so it's very fine, if you do ots you'll want some clean ice cube trays to freeze it in. just heat and serve up mixed with a little of what she's already having so it's not to strong.

If you want to give her broccoli or cauliflower, just steam or boil and mash roughly.

Try to get over the liquid food stage fairly quick, we're stuck on mashed or big suckable bits at the moment. Oh, and don't worry i she gags on anything, it's normal.

Did you get one of those Watties/Plunket "Guide to Baby Feeding" charts to stick on your fridge Denise? They are really handy, listing what foods are appropriate to introduce at what age. Your Plunket nurse should have them.

Also, there is a great little recipe book by Alison and Simon Holst called "Baby food and beyond" - bought ours for $5 off TM ... has great explanations of how to prepare foods etc and loads of ideas to try .
