Lately when breastfeeding, my 3 and 1/2 week old boy has been alternately yanking and pulling at the breast and comfort sucking at the breast when at the end of a feed. Up till now he's fed only on one breast per feed and that's been enough, but today he's fed for first time on both breasts.
My question is: has anyone else experienced this, and how would you stop baby from yanking and comfort sucking, as it hurts whens he pulls (obviously) and when I have to unlatch him from the breast. I am easing my little finger into the corner of his mouth, but he resists unlatching and it still hurts a bit getting him off. Any help please? |

Both my babies have displayed the same behaviour. For me it meant that my milk supply was low and they were trying desparately hard to get some more milk out. Is he pulling hard on the nipple and then banging his head into your breast? Cause that is a classic sign of a low supply.
If you think that is the problem then there are several things you can do. Firstly I would recommend going to your local family centre, plunket can tell you where they are. And also you can get a couple of natural remedies to help boost your supply. Lacatation drops (from natropath) and breastfeeding teas (health food stores), often pharmacies have similar products too. If you need to then there are a couple of medications that you can take as well but best to go to your family centre first and make sure that it is low supply thats the problem. |

My Boy does this. It is Painful. Not sure I have any solutions. Sometimes he does it to get the let down to happen other time I think he's just doing it cause he can.

Arianne comfort sucks right at the end of the feed still. I know she is doing this because she usally dripples milk and there is none.

| i was told around 3weeks that i should start feeding on both side as it keeps your milk supply up. Feed on one side (say left) then burp and put him on right side, next feed you start on the right and finish on the left make sense? keep at it hun. My son seems to be really rough with me sometime ( hes six months) though it doesn't hurt anymore i think i just got used to it - biting does hurt however GRRRR. Good luck. Im sure you and bub will sort it out but i would mention it to your midwife |

| Thanks guys for the advice. I have asked my MW, she suggested trying a couple of things, but doesn't have any magic cures. Hopefully he gives it up soon! |

My bub was doing the pulling pushing thing earlier this week. I found things improved when I fed in a kitchen chair - I was feeding from bed and/or slouched on the couch, and I think the posture may have affected the efficiency of the latching. Also to de-latch bubs, the best method I have found is gently pulling on bub's cheek so that the corner of the mouth looses its seal. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I found the best way to un-latch baby was to wet my finger in my mouth, slide it in to the corner of baby's mouth and then turn finger sideways to break the seal - they sure do get a good suction going dont they!! -------------
