i wan to plant one. what do i have to do. we have a patch we can use but the soil is yucky because the people before us had a bird avery on top of it so the soil is full of poo. what do i have to do, dig all the soil out and replace it? do i have to use fertiliser? what plants grow well etc... between me and DH we buy 4kg of frozen veggies a week and go through a couple lettuces and a few tubs of cherry tomatotes. i know we cant grow that much but i figure it will at least save us some money. -------------

I would imagine that the bird poo is a good thing. Unless you get some good answers on here, I have always found the staff at Palmers Garden Centres really knowledgable.
But I would be more inclinded to buy some new soil & turn both lots together. Is it a raised bed? Also if you are going to plant things like brocolli & cauli make sure you plant marigolds as well as it helps keep away the bugs. we are also planting a vege garden, once we movein the new house - we just bought the yates garden guide - you can get it reasonably cheap on fishpond (we got ours from real groovy cause we had gift vouchers). Am hoping it will be handy for all that kinda of stuff.
also NZgarden has a site and email newletter which we've found helpful for ideas. |

Good for you! We love having a vege garden. Veges are sooo expensive in the shops and covered in sprays etc. What I would do is turn the soil over, don't worry about the bird poo that is fertiliser, and pop in a couple of bags of good compost and some blood and bone. You always feed your soil rather than feed your plants. Invest in a yates garden guide too it will tell you what to plant together and what to keep apart (like tomatoes and potatoes). Also invest in some slug and snail repellant and some derris dust for the white butterfly, or netting if you don't want to dust your veges. If you plant marigolds to keep away bugs it has to be the french marigold. If you don't have much space then just plant the expensive stuff. It is probably a bit late for tomatoes but you could put in broccoli, silverbeet etc. I alway plant my lettuce & herbs in pots just outside the kitchen mostly because I'm too lazy to always walk down to the garden and it also saves space in the vege patch.

Ok, DO NOT REMOVE THE POO! Be thankful that you have that wonderful rich source of nitrogen already in your garden, your vege's will love you for it. Your heading into the brassica time of year so broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, brussel sprouts etc ate perfect, silverbeet and spinach will grow pretty much all year unless you have serious frost issues. Basically what Saffron has said I second. One other thing I would say is that if you want to go organic (which I would HIGHLY recommend, it's cheaper and healthier) then don't put as much space between your plants as some books recommend, intensive growing is great, stops weeds from getting in, also look into companion planting, the Yates book is good. Not all plants like well feed soils, like carrots for example, they like fairly crappy soil but just nicely dug over. Mitre 10 sell a really good range of organic seedlings and they aren't too hideous in price.
