this is a really embarrassing question for me!

one of my nipples is extremly sore and sensitive, and feels like the skins burning which kind of radiates down a bit. is it normal? i know its a bit chilly, and could just have something to do with that, but i find it odd that its only one nipple that is causing me the great discomfort!

a few questions... any ideas? and what can i do?! arrh!!!

Sounds a bit like you may have an infection that is starting to go up the nipple. Have you started to leak colustrum yet? Id suggest you go to your gp or talk to your midwife just incase.

My nipples get itchy at the best of times for some reason when I am hot or wearing synthetic bras & tops (try and make sure I have cotton against them now)..even when Im not pregnant!! They itch so much I scratch then they weep and are a bit raw and its a nightmare to clear up!!!

I have used a mild hydrocortisone...But thats really not what I should use!!

Apparently..one of our Preggy Mums was telling us there is some great stuff you get from the health shop which numbs the nipple..it is very safe and can be used prior to giving birth...before breastfeeding (which is great in those first few weeks when its like razor blades!!) and you dont have to wash it off or anything - does not affect baby...Supposed to be brilliant....

Apparently a lot of people have problems with LANOLIN which is found in a lot of nipple creams these days.

BUT..I dont have the name so when I get it I will post it up here for you.

I wouldn't have thought Lanolin in nipple creams would be a huge issue, maybe if someone has an allergy, as even my midwife (among others) has recommended PureLan which has lanolin in it - I have found it great even well before preggy with handcreams that have it in. Anyway, if you're having any kind of pain or discomfort AND even if you're just only leaking a little bit of colostrum, go see a doctor ! It might not come to anything, but I'd rather knock potential mastitis or anything else on the head well before bubs arrives. Let us know how you go, the sooner you treat it the better, but in the meantime I guess massage (as awkward or as much of a hassle as it might be) might help, maybe hot showers as well ??

thanks jax! yeah i had a warm bath last night and layed in an akward position getting my "tit" warm and massaging it! it has been leaking heaps too, and is still sore, maybe improving though. i'd hate to have infection even before baby is here makes me nervous about how i'll be when my milks in and feeding!!!! fingers crossed.

Oh ! And I just clicked as to why it is just in one nipple, reason being is that each breast has it's own seperate 'feeding' system - I almost forgot that it is possible to virtually dry off one breast and feed solely off the other, hence it would be logical enough for an infection (if that's what it is) to be present in one and not the other.
