My son has been going to bed at 7pm and sleeping through (most of the time) for a while now. But recently he has been waking once or twice a night and really crying.   When I go to him it just seems he wants a cuddle for 5 minutes and then I can put him to bed again. However for the last two nights a simple cuddle hasn't done it and he's been quite distressed until I've eventually found a way of calming him and putting him back to bed. Could it be nightmares? Any thoughts for a solution. Maybe a night light would help? I haven't been too concerned up to now as the night cuddles are quite lovely (the only time he is really still and affectionate) but I am returning to work soon and will need a full night's sleep myself.

We gave our DD a torch so if she was scared she could turn the torch on. There need to be some serious rules about it's use though!

Unfortunately though he might just need a cuddle if he is scared. Is he fully awake? Sometimes they don't wake fully so after a small amount of reassurance they go back to sleep quite quickly.

Sorry not much else to offer.

happens here too sometimes..we just cuddle till his breathing goes to normal then put him back in bed..scary isnt it:( (though i love the cuddles as well!) for him it's often when he is teething..no idea why it coincides with that though!

It could be nightmares. Does he seem aware when he wakes up, if not and its like the blinds are open but nobodies home, then it might be night terrors. If he is waking at the same time every night then you could go in 5-10minutes before he usually wakes & gently stir him, no enough to wake him but just enough to change his sleep cycle & break the pattern.

Same thing happens here.  tom is a great sleeper but has been waking like that for a while. We finally have 4 teeth coming through so I think that is a lot of it.  Also growing pains?

I also like the cuddles.....especially when all I have to do is pat his forehead, tell him to lie down and leave the room.  DH is up for AGES with him..te he he.

we went through a couple of weeks when Ella had nightmares and would wake up crying and wouldn't calm down. in the end the only thing that would calm her down was to bring her into our bed and she slept there for the rest of the night.
