Are you planning on having more than one baby? If so then makes sense to buy a capsule as second bubba will get to use it too.
As to whether to use a capsule or straight to a carseat it comes down to personal opinion and circumstances - I wouldn't have done without our capsule due in large to the fact it clipped onto our pram base - we found it invaluable for the first few months as you didn't have to wake bubba up getting in and out of the car. DD was in it until she was 1 so it proved good value for us.
We have a top of the line Maxi Cosi, but I probably wouldn't buy one unless you're getting a pram that can fit it (Bugaboo, Quinny) - they are expensive capsules and there are other cheaper brands that do the job just as well if you're not going to use it on a pram.

I agree... buy one if you are planning on more than one baby. And most are not very expensive. I think hiring costs about $50, and you can buy one from about $100.
I wouldn't of been without my capsule either, it is much easier with a little baby, and a newborn would seem soooo little for a carseat!!
I think most brands are very simialr, so it may come down to which buggy you have, if you want one that will fit into your buggy. I would reccomend one that has a base that straps into the car, it is a lot easier and quicker (esp in the rain etc)

I never had a capsule and didn't miss it. I think it comes down to personal choice.
My boy soon learnt to be pick up out of his carseat and placed in his cot. He never did well with sleeping in his pushchair though.

I've been debating this exact same thing. I've already worked out which carseat I want and push chair... but the idea of a capsule espeically for your first does make a lot of sense. However... if I got a capsule for my pushchair (imaginary at this stage!) with two kids close together, can you use a double kit and the capsule? If the answer is no, then a capsule would only be of use for one baby unless you've waited until your older one's could walk.
I hope that makes sense, it still doesn't help me make a decision but essentially a capsule does seem like an extra cost with not a lot of benefit.

I had a capsule that fit the pram and I hated it! Was always a PITA strapping the damn thing in and out of the car! Especially with a winter baby, always seemed to be raining when trying to get her into/out of the car! So my advice would be find something that is quick and easy to get baby in and out of the car.
This time I'm going to hire a capsule and base from Baby City for 6 months, after that Caitlin will be old enough (and heavy enough hopefully) to go into a booster seat (start at 14kg), then baby can have her Safe and Sound Meridan AHR (Which I absolutely love!) That will do baby until right through until 20kg and if it's anything like it's big sister that will be a loooooong time
