We've been doing cloth nappies during the day, and I've had enough already! I've had to change her clothes 3 times today due to leaks, they are so huge that none of her clothes fit over her bum, and she just looks so uncomfortable! I wonder, actually, if they are affecting her sleep with the leaks, she hasn't slept longer than 2 hours since we started using them, and now that I've given up for today she's still going 3+hrs later... it's so hard knowing! We actually can't afford to buy disposables all the time, so I need to figure this out. We've been using a million types of nappies to try and figure it out. I have a HEAP of the cloth flats and covers, a few bitti-d'lish that seem to work ok, and a whole heap of varying types second or third hand from my SIL. I try and have things fitting as closely as possible, but how do you make things tight without cutting the poor baby in half? Sadly, we can't afford to buy more cloth nappies either, so we have to work with what we've got. Any suggestions? Please help! |

Its hard. We are having similar problems and I find that you have to go one size bigger in clothes. If the clothes are tight around the nappy you get leaks. Bitti d'lish are the smallest but possibly not the most leak resistant.
Making nappies yourself is suprisingly easy and affordable too. |

Yeah and three weeks old is a pretty teeny baby! We didnt start with clothes until Issy was about 12 weeks (so a little more chunky).  ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! we tried cloth as soon as Astin was born (well within a week or so) and had the same probs as you so we used sposies until he was 6ish weeks and had some chunk in his thighs to fill them out we used cloth with no probs from then until around 17 months when he started long hours at daycare.
If it helps - i buy super cheap sposies from countdown, they are $4.60 for a pack of 16 (LARGE of course for us) which is nice and cheap and makes me feel better about not using the cloth in the cupboard! lol, They are great nappies too!!! Otherwise nappies for less sell cheap nappies. |

we also didn't start cloth until about 3 months, but i also second that too-tight clothes can cause wicking of moisture out of the nappy. To be fair, we got leaking from even disposables when Natalie was really little - nothing can contain those newborn poo-splosions! -------------

I started on Cloth about 2 weeks old to three weeks old. I had old fashioned cloth & then got Itti's AIO's at 6 weeks but think he could have fit them earlier.
Where abouts are you? You will have to go up a size with clothing because the nappies got further down between their legs. What sort of covers do you have for your flats? I can show you a way of making them less bulky under the cover, I gave up last time too cause they were too bulky & we didn't have the fancy MCN's like now days, I have now figured out a system & it's just as easy as with disposies. Only time I have "leaks" with wee is when they are on too long over night Or have poo explosions, usually they are all contained. ------------- Kel http://lilypie.com">

Hiya,
I put Amelie in fuzzibunz and bumgenius nappies when she was 12 weeks old. I tried when she was really little but they pee & poo so much it wasn't fun for anyone! If the inserts are old they sometimes don't retain the moisture as well - perhaps you could make your own new inserts for the covers? I also found clothes like overalls were better than trousers as they aren't so hugging to the waist etc. Amelie is almost 2 and prefers her nappies to disposables so will be using them again when no.2 arrives - but will wait till it gets over the constant poos! Stick with it, as it definitely saves you money! -------------

Just a thought - if some of your nappies are preloved then they might have detergent and/or cream build up on them and they could benefit from being stripped.
1. Hot wash, just water 2. Cold wash, 1/2 cup each white vinegar & baking soda 3. Cold wash 1/2 cup white vinegar 4. Cold wash, just water. Like the others have said, it could just be that your baby is quite small at the moment and if you try again in a few weeks time you'll find that they perform better. Out of interest, what nappies are you using? If they're one-size or even some smalls then she will grow into them. But don't give up on cloth altogether. Give it a break and try again  -------------

I had Joel in cloth at 8 days with no leaks...but only during the day when we were at home. Once he got a bit bigger it was all the time but just started out slow. At the beginning we used home made polarfleece covers with real nappies inserts. they were the only ones that fit inside the nappy covers. Once he got bigger we used th next size (good on mum for making me heaps of different sizes) with my microfibre inserts and bamboo boosters. Now hes mainly in ittis during the day and berry plush for nights. Only time we have leaks is if I have left him too long or the carseat straps are pushing against his too wet nap and it pushes it out. -------------

Thanks ladies, I'm a bit calmer today! The small itti-bitti's fit really well and don't leak, but I only have 3 of those. So we'll do one cloth nappy every day for now, I think, and get some cheap sposies until she's a bit bigger, and I'm ready to try again!

I would try her in cloth once she is a lil more "chunky" We were going to put Caden in cloth from newborn but he had such skinny legs I thought nahhh no way is that gonna work, so we used huggies.
We have actually only just started him full time in cloth, we use the baby cheeks from baby factory etc and they are fab. My nana got us 12 of them so we could start fulltime cloth, we have had hardly any leaks with these. I think when they are teeny wee newborns, the MCN's are just too big for them... ETA-Caden wears a sposie at night cos I cnat be bothered with cloth at night lol, and we use homebrand, $5 a pack, nice and cheap!!! Huggies etc are just too expensive now. ------------- |

| I second homebrand as I've just mentioned in another thread on here! Really really good and so cheap at $5 a pack, I've heard through several diff people that they're actually made by the same company that make huggies. Could be wrong in saying that, but they work just as well - infact BETTER than Huggies. So def give them a go :) |

Hey kiwivic - can you use your stripping recipe on pocket nappies i.e. fuzzibunz? I was going to buy some more inserts and see whether they held more but perhaps 2 year old nappies just need stripping??? -------------

Stripping doesn't alays work I found out.....I stripped a huge pile of nappies my sister gave me, took all day, and they are still the same to the point i'm not using them as they smell so bad -------------
