It just occurred to me that I don’t actually know where I’m supposed to feel the contractions (during the first stage)? I need to know so that I can mentally prepare myself lol
Is it just at the top of your bump (like the Braxton Hicks)? Or is it at your cervix when it dialates?
And…
At what stage do you feel your “lady bits” stretch to open up? Just the pushing stage when the head is close? And is that like the “burning” sensation I’ve heard of?
I saw on the birth vids at Antenatal class that her “lady bits” looked to be 10cm dialated as well as her cervix

lol "lady bits"!!

Umm, well I knew it was contractions cos my waters had broken. But they felt like bad period cramps. I dont remember feeling my "lady bits" stretching cos the contractions were so painful and close together thats all I could feel. The burning sensation is as the heads coming out, but I dont really recall it being painful, more just pushing sooo hard to actually get it out! Not long to go now Toni!

thanks for asking this questions - I was just wondering the same thing. I have been getting the occasional period type cramp but not regular and not every day.

I've been getting those too Erin - perhaps those "period cramps" are a version of the BH as well as the tight belly and twinges at the top?

yeah they could be - I dont think I've had an actual BH the way everyone descibes them, and I refuse to believe I could be having actual contractions.

I guess it would be like revising for an exam - everyone's methods are different so I can't think of any reason why everyone's body would prepare for birth in the exact same way. A lot of ladies on here have said "you'll KNOW when you're in labour" so I would worry about it just yet Erin

Ive been told BH are normally at the top of your bump and more they are a tight feeling rather than really painful althogh they do make you slow down. I remember the weekend before I went into hospital saying to my friend that I feel like Im getting my period, except obviously I couldnt be and then on the monday went into hospital and was already 3cm and the period type pain in my back was me dialating. during full on labour my pains were in my back like period pain x 100! and I could feel contractions more down the sides of my bump.

I remember when Jake was born, as he was crowning I though, oh this pushing thing doesn't really hurt. when I was in labour with Taine I thought, I remember this not hurting last time...bugger.
And then as he head was out, they said to wait a few seconds before pushing more. I thought stuff this, and pushed him out. more uncomfortable than anything in regards to pushing.
Befoer I was in labour I had days of cramping. I was hopeful this was labour without me knowing. one day I was right, but the other days I was wrong. I didn't really know I was in labour until just after my waters broke.

My contractions came on all of a sudden and were unmistakable, but didn't really hurt to start with. I kinda had to pretend they hurt just so I looked like I was in labour (well, for about 1/2 an hour, then they reeeeally did start to hurt) They built up intensity and pain over time.

I remember it being quite painful to push, but like the others said, the worst thing was having to make such a huge effort when you are at your most exhausted point. That is worse than pain.

hahhaha Good luck girlies!!!! I'm so mean

I remember the MW saying "Come on just one more push...I promise that will be it" ( I am sure thinking at the time that she had said that QUITE a few times!

That's a really good point, Kelly!

When it comes to the actual delivery, it really does feel like you are doing a massive poo! It wasn't until the baby's head was most of the way out and I was starting to graze that I knew the head was coming out the right place both times!

And I got a headache after..felt like my head was going to explode.

Yeah, okay, so it's not the nicest description!

But in all honesty, that is exactly what it feels like when you're pushing Baby out... just ask your midwife or any of the other mums who've been there, done that!

Actually now I remember it does feel like your trying to push out a huge poo. I remember I keep saying to my specialist that i didnt want to push cos I thought I felt like I was trying to poo and they keep telling me that that was normal. Took them abit of convincing though lol

She used to say its like trying to get out of your car thru the exhust pipe...trumatic for both you and the exhust pipe but you both get over it quickly

The thing is too is that its so differnt for everyone. My Main pain was in my back. Once i was actually birthing my two it was fine. I didnt get the ring of fire or anything like that (well dont remember it compared to the back pains).

Yeah and it does take a while to figure out what muscles to use to push. Sorry if this it TMI but my midwife put her fingers in the right spot for me to push against when i was birthing Alyssa. With Jayde she just flew out so no help needed.

my contractions were in my back, my legs and where i get period cramps....felt like someone was pulling my tummy from the inside and i kept asking (telling) my friend to punch my legs but she refused.Cow lets see if i punch her when she asks then.

I must be the only women on the planet whos given birth and didnt get that needing to poo thing...it just felt like i wanted to push.....i got the burning ring tho owwwww.

and also u might feel a bit light headed after,on account of the blood loss...i fainted after going to the toilet...and all i remember thinking is that the carpet at birth care was really hard lol

Wow I shouldn't have read this topic I think!!! I'm going to be going through this very soon arrrggghhhhh!

I definitely remember my labour with Alex.....I couldn't even really feel the contractions until my midwife broke my waters at 4 cms, then suddenly it was like someone was trying to crowbar my hips apart. I got double whammy lasting for a couple of minutes then a 30 second break then more contractions.
Pain was in my back, because he was posterior I was told and also down low.
I remember sweating....I remember seeing Spencer right in front of me talking & I couldn't hear him....I remember feeling really out of control.
At some point I asked for an epidural and I remember crying when I was told I had to actually sit still while they put the needle in my back.
I only got to 6cm so I never got to push him out & if it was like a big poo or a rotating pineapple or whatever I would have no idea

Braxton Hicks with Alex were just a tight feeling all over my tummy. This time I get them & its tight all over but mostly at the top but at the same time lots of pressure down low. If I went into labour before my induction I honestly don't think I would recognize it!!!

The man that came and did mine was Asain and I had no idea what he was saying. And the midwife was not even there.

My husband left the room when he saw the size of the needle so I was on me own! Luckily I had a lovely nurse to hold my hand. I had really bad contractions in my back so I told them they had to wait until I was ready. Before we got to the hospital my husband had said if there are any Arab Dr's in the room don't swear and don't say God. As soon as they put the needle in I shouted out ****, then started moaning Oh God that hurt!!! And it was all for nothing as it only worked for about 10 minutes, then I told them it wasn't working so they topped me up twice and I told them again and again it wasn't working. After I delivered they went to take it out and it had come out - I told them it wasn't bloody working!!!
