Hi,
Having just done a fairly long trip with DS in his capsule we realise its time for a car seat.
Do they still have to be backwards facing, or when can I turn him round.
Will be buying a car seat anyway but just wondered what others have done.??????

Definately still backwards at Finley's age. I think it is around1 that you can turn them around. The reason being that their heads are so heavy and disproportionate that if they are forward facing and you have even a small prang there is a very high chance of brain injury and damage.
Also some carseats have a recommended weight that your child should be before you turn them around, so it is best to have a look at the manufacturers directions as well.
Dom was a big head baby so we kept him facing backwards until about 13mths.

Finley also has a big head - so backwards it is, bummer so looking forward to him facing forwards.

The longer they are rear facing the better, I know its a PITA but it is safest. In Sweden they dont face forwards until 5 and their infant car crash related deaths one of the lowest in the world.
If you look on youtube for crash tests of forward facing vs rear facing it will make you think twice about shifting them round!

Caden has been in a safe and sound car seat since he was 2 months old and its great! he still has quite a lot of leg space and all we need to do soon is adjust the straps because they are getting too tight as he gets bigger. I have a mirror off trade me and it attaches to the headrest in front of Caden and I can see him from my rear vision mirror, this is it http://www.trademe.co.nz/Baby-gear/Monitors/auction-210599801.htm - Here , Caden LOVES it because its so bright and he can see me as well, when I stop at lights etc I will turn around and wave to him and he can see me and I get big smiles
It is safest to keep them rear facing until they are at least 1, even though the car seats say they can go forward facing from 10kg. At 5 months old he is definitely to young for forward facing.

Love the dragon mirror, think I might have to get one.
Once the car seat is in, is it tricky to move it. Dh and I have a car, his is a work car with free petrol so during the week we use mine and then at weekends when he is home we use his - with the capsule so easy to swap from car to car.

You have to keep them rearward until 6 month legally and after that its up to you when you turn him around. My DS has been in a carseat since birth but it only did rearward to 9kgs so had to turn him at 6months. I would prefer rearward as its the safest but DS LOVES LOVES LOVES being forward facing.
THink about the hieght of your babe as sometimes they grow out of the seats to quickly because they get too tall.

Love that dragon mirror! I have been thinking of getting something like that!
I have a carseat that I have used since birth for C, has been fine, it's rearward & has a newborn insert in it to narrow it down. i think it's a safe n sound?
