What great tips thanks. I am sure there are others who could add to it too.

Baking soda is great for getting off stubborn baked on food on dishes just sprinkle it over and rub. I use this to clean my sink too and it comes out oh so shiny and new.

Great tips Babe.  I am imagining you living in a gorgeous log cabin 100 years ago surrounded by trees.  You have some long lost skills there.  Inspirational.  I must try some of them.

Hey just got home glad everyone enjoyed the tips.

I do what Bizzy does Kel just have some baking soda in a cup and mix in some water then bam onto the hair.

Borax is $7 for 1kg on Trademe from this guy in palmy and its the cheapest I've found.

Sarahbetha I just get the cheapest baking soda form the supermarket. Surprisingly enough you don't go through it that fast - well I don't anyway. Only a little bit is required for cleaning and hair so start there and see how you go maybe.

LOL NZPiper I live in a decrepit old state house and adore my ipod and internet connection but am liking your scenario!

For anybody thats into bottling and freezing - pears, beetroot, brocolli and pumpkins are in season and soooo cheap at our vege market so probably yours too. Brought up big today and will be spending all friday jarring, blanching, pureeing and packaging. It'll be great for when I can't go shopping or when that stuff is more expensive again.

Anybody thats into sewing - we have a factory shop here with wads of merino. Theres a ton of stripy and plain stuff there at the moment so if you're wanting to make sleeping bags, leggings and pjs for winter and don't have access to good quality stuff then its $10 per metre for seconds or $15 per metre new stuff. I can shop and post.
1 metre makes my Jake 2 sets of pjs (top and bottom) and a set or two of leg warmers.

hi, im just wondering what borax is? and also babe how much marino would i need to make my son a sleeping bag? i think it should be relatively easy to make (am i right?). The only thing ive sewed in my life is hand sewing a quilt and a ball dress with help of my mother. So dont have that much experience but do have a machine. I was just gonna use his current sleeping back as a template

Borax is an acid but its on the safe usage end of the scale

I taught myself to sew at the beginning of the year lol I'm still pretty new but I just whack away at and use commonsense and it always turns out ok (except I tend to sew things wrong so the seam ends up on the outside and I havta unpick and start again lol) I would say a metre would definitely do it but I think you'd need a second layer of either merino (thats what I did) or cotton so 2 metres of material in all. You should have some left over and be able to squeeze a pair of legwarmers and elastic waisted pj pants out of that atleast! Hope that helps

Oh as for ease uhm I found it slightly trickier that other stuff I've done but it was ok as I wasn't looking for perfection (which is good coz I didn't get it!) I'll post pictures of his sleeping bag when he gets back from Invers and put up some of the clothes I've made too - they're easy as!

Well we run Highland Cattle so its a little pricier than you'd pay at the stockyards since we have high grade cattle for breeding and showing, not beefies. A younger Highland steer would be about $600 where as a beef animal would be cheaper. Its beautiful meat Highland though. Gorgeous marbling, tender, tasty and the healthiest beef meat in the world. Its got lower cholesterol than chicken!

Hey Babe, you are AMAZING!! I'm so inspired! I really need to teach myself how to sew.
What do you use to clean your Oven? I used baking soda the other day and sprayed it with water and left it over night, it got off some of the grease but not all of it, what would you suggest?

You have inspired me to do something with pears and jars!!! I unfortunately don't have your skills though so need to ask what I am sure is a silly question but how would I preserve pears and how long would they keep for? Would the benefits over shope brought pears in a can (ie the watties ones - juice not syrup) just that they would have no preservatives? Where do you buy preserving jars from?

Jojo its the Levana factory in Levin so people from palmy and wgtn could trip up or down quite easily. They have a HUGE amount of material cottons and all sorts (if anyone from outside the area wants sweatshirting material there all sorts of colours!!) they make the material out the back then they have the shop at the front with seconds, cutoffs and some firsts too. I just got 4 metres of seconds merino for $40 (I don't know whats wrong with it it looks perfectly fine to me!) and an offcut metre of blue 100% cotton for 50 cents which will make a sweater for Jake I love a bargain!!!!!

Where d'u live? If you're close to me maybe we could catch up?

as requested

Yoghurt and egg conditioner-for oily/flyaway after shampooing whisk together  5tbls natural yoghurt & 1 egg massage into scalp. Leave on hair for a few mins then rinse.

Egg and coconut conditioner-all hair types. Heat 2tbls coconut oil. Then add 1 beaten egg and 1tbls vinegar. Massage into hair while still warm. Keep your hair covered for 30mins with a steaming towel, shampoo then rinse.

Hair rinse- Rosemary is easy to get hold of and makes your hair shine. Make it like a pot of tea, boiling water some rosemary leaves leave it to steep (u can gently simmer it too if you like) and after shampooing rince your hair with it, pour it through, catch what comes out and keep repeating until you've had enough or your arms are tired! Don't rinse it out let it dry naturally for a nice shine.

I have to agree with you babe on the make your own pasta sauce its much cheaper its also way healtheir have you seen how much salt and sugar they add to that stuff its unbelievable.

I also agree with the vege garden it doesn't have to be big there is nothing better than the satisfaction gained from eating something you grew out of your garden plus you can control what you put on it. On that note i have been playing around with neem granules this year and they are great pest control on brassicas you just need to apply it once a month.

That fabric shop sounds fab wish we had that here I have a sewing machine that doesn't get much use i must drag it out again and have aplay i have so much fabric ( once upon a time i was going to make a quilt) maybe i should do something with it.

Ohh you have highland cows i so love those animals. Hey whats the coat like is it coarse or soft i always wondered.

One of the most important tips for shopping for vege and fruit is buy wahts in season its always cheaper.

Thanks Selina will def be trying all your suggestions!!

Sweetpea I'm horrified at the amount of crap that goes into processed food! I've always been fascinated by the amish simple lifestyle so while some things aren't possible (like going without a car! or my computer!!! or my dishwasher!!!!!) I enjoy the natural way of living. The one thing I'd really like that I can't have right now is a milking animal - fresh milk is soooooo delish!!! We used to have fresh milk when I was a kid and I miss it!

Highland coats are soft AND coarse lol the body coat is coarser but weirdly enough still quite soft and their faces are so soft! When I'm helping halter train the calves I get to give them lots of cuddles and over christmas we hand-reared a couple in our backyard which was hilarious. Jake used to play in his paddling pool and you'd have the dogs climbing in and out with him and the calves drinking from the edges too. I had to keep them from climbing in though coz they're still alot bigger than my baby.

I'll try neem granules then. Its been abit of a fight in the garden this summer with the pests (on top of the dogs that bury bones under my veges, the chickens that think my garden is there for their sole pleasure and the toddler that digs the poor seedlings up with his spade in an attempt to copy daddy!) so good to gather as many tips as possible so that I actually get some veges out of the garden this year!

my husband is a big believer in companion planting to combat pests...and marigolds look so pretty among the veges.
we have been using a bokashi bucket for our food scraps lately and hubby has used the compost to extend the garden....

Oh Bizzy I love companion gardening! Anything you can tell me would be avidly read!! I've been slowly creating a pottager type garden so we have nasturtiums, chamomile, pots of mint etc in our garden but I only started this garden over christmas (we brought our place in July/August but got so battered by the storms that the garden went down the priority list ) so I'm still working at it. Please post as many gardening tips as you can pleeeeeaaaaasssseeee????!!!!

Which loaf of bread did you do??

Tip for the no-knead bread - don't overcook it and cover it (while still in the breadpan) with a clean teatowel which should soften the crust abit. Our fave is def the knead white bread mmmm but they're both good. The thing with the no-knead is that you can adjust it to make what you want i.e fruit bread - add raisins/mixed fruit/whatever and allspice just mucking around til you get the desired result.

Just keep in mind when going shampoo-free that as the seasons change, so does your hair. You may need to change your routine frequency every 3-4 months. (Ie, if you washed twice a week, you may need to change it to once).

Sugar wax recipe:

1 cup sugar
Half a lemon for the juice
1/4 cup honey
Cornstarch (to powder with for tautness making it more effective)
Something to spread the mixture with like a tongue depressor, popsicle stick, cheese spreader or spatula.
Cotton fabric (a pillowcase ripped into strips is good)

Mix lemon, sugar, and honey in a bowl. Microwave on high for about 2-3 minutes, until it bubbles into a smooth consistency. Otherwise heat on the stove. If you use the stove use LOW heat. Wait until it cools a little down so you can touch it safely. Microwave it for 20 seconds if its cooled too much. It needs to be cool enough not to burn and warm enough to spread fairly easily.

Make sure your legs or where ever is clean and dry. Then dust area with cornstarch which draws out oil and makes the whole thing more effective. Spread a thin layer on your leg. Cover with a strip of fabric, and rubbing the strip the opposite way of hair growth, about 3 times.

Grab the fabric end and pull it off very quickly against the direction of the hair growth or the other way if you wish. It will hurt but the more you do it the less painful it is - just like waxing. Reheat the mix if it gets too hard to spread. This stores for a long time. Remember that each time you use it you'll need to reheat it so store in a microwave safe container.

Liquid handwash from Dear Wendyl NZWW

250ml boiling water
1tbsp grated sunlight/pure soap
2tsp glycerine (toothpaste aisle in new world is where I found it)
2tsp rosewater

Melt soap in boiling water then stir in glycerine and rosewater. Pour the mixture in a soap dispenser while still warm and it'll set, ending up with a jelly-like texture.

I was using another recipe using borax but I think this will be kinder to my hands! I haven't tried it yet but I have a full day coming up where I'll be making this, washing liquid, shampoo balls and cleaners so will let y'all know what I think.

Homemade deodorant

3 Tablespoons shea butter
3 Tablespoons baking soda
2 Tablespoons corn starch
2 Tablespoons cocoa butter
2 vitamin E oil gel caps (puncture and squeeze out the oil) (I used EPO capsules )
Essential Oil (I used vanilla)

Melt all the ingredients (except the oils) and give it a good stir. Takes about 30 seconds in the microwave. Then add the oils, stir again, and pour it in a jar, then place it in the fridge to set.
I found this on the net somewhere and wrote it down but its good!

I really want to try this one but I havta source coconut oil first! I tried with jojoba I think but hmmm not so succesfull...

Coconut oil
baking soda
arrowroot powder or cornstarch

Combine equal portions of baking soda & arrowroot powder. I use about 1/4 cup each. Then slowly add coconut oil and work it in with a spoon until it maintains the substance you want. May need to be stored in fridge.

Katep howd your bread go?? I always make extra pizza bases and freeze them and do the same with pancakes and crepes and pikelets. Just separate them with baking paper. Means its easier to haul out, heat and serve when you want something special but don't have time.

We do have bigger bills (vets, etc) and a credit card and qcard debt (we each brought a card debt into the relationship ) but we've now set it up so everything gets the minimum payment then when one is paid off we add the $10/$20/whatever amount we were paying on that to another bill so it goes from say $10 to $20 a week or even more. Then thats an extra $20 we put on something else when the second bill is paid and so on. So far we've paid off 3 big bills, have 2 plus the two cards left and everything will be paid off by June. We just add all the money we can into our bill account and portion it out from there.

Baking Soda Mouthwash

Mix 500ml of water, 1/4 Teaspoon of baking soda or Sea Salt, 1 drop of Pure Peppermint Oil, and 1 drop of Tea Tree oil. It leaves a great refreshing minty taste in your mouth and helps prevent bad breathe.

The Honey Milk Baby Lotion

For a lotion that you can refrigerate and use for up to a week, you will need ˝ cup of runny honey and ˝ cup of cream or milk (cream being the best option). Pour the honey into the milk in a saucepan over a medium heat and stir until the two are completely blended. Allow the mixture to stand for five minutes before placing in a glass jar with a lid and refrigerating. When completely cool, it will be ready to use.

Baby wipe recipes -

1 chamomile tea bag
1 teaspoon oil
1 teaspoon baby bath or shampoo
1 drop lavendar oil
1 cup hot water

OR

2 tablespoons oil
2 tablespoons baby wash
1 1/2 cups water

OR

Two camomile tea bags
Two teaspoons of almond oil (or baby oil)
A drop of some essential oil.
Two mugs of water

Mix together and spritz onto babys bum or use in like a huggies containers and pop your cloth wipes in there too.

Oatmeal baby bath -

Blend up a bag of rolled oats then sprinkle a handful or so into babys bath and mix.
I do this for Jake (especially during summer when he would get so many bug bites!) and his skin is so soft!!! It relieves itching and good for dry skin, eczema, diaper rash, chicken pox, etc.
I actually add it to my baths too on the odd occasion I have them If you don't want the mess then put the oats in a cotton bag and hang under the tap. Squeeze every so often to release the milk into the bath.

For diaper rash try using ground slippery elm as a dusting powder (slippery elm is great for kids who get abit blocked up too) and of course cornstarch/arrowroot is a great baby powder substitute if you use it. Add dried, crushed lavender for a soothing scent. I used it for Jake when he was a baby.

Noo don't stop! This is great! Over the holidays I'll be making bread, muesli bars and ginger beer, and when my cleaners run out I won't be buying more.
With the washing gunge, do you do a warm wash? Just that I made a similar type thing several years ago but found I had to do a warm wash or it gunked up the machine. It didn't have borax in it though, maybe that makes a difference?
Also, how do you use the homemade deodorant?
And (sorry so many questions) ..

Although DH looked at me as if I was mad when I suggested going to the saleyard and buying a cow to be butchered. I got big puppy dog eyes and a speech about how he couldn't kill a cow - this as he's cooking a nice juicy piece of scotch fillet!!

Ok glad people are actually reading and enjoying

Genie I just use my fingers then rub any excess into my hands. I know that homemade deodorant can irritate different peoples skin so if you start getting a rash or whatever then stop using it k.

I mean put the rolled oats in the blender and grind them to dust pretty much. Sorry wasn't clear on that. You can add dried lavender to the blender for a sleepy scented bath though actually!

LOL BecM that cracked me up! Typical man we had beautiful homekilled steaks for tea too DP decided he needed red meat and since I was threatening to defrost some soup coz I don't feel well he offered (all noble and self-sacrificing of course ) to cook dinner!

I guess the whole animal thing is a little more difficult when you're new to it. I suggest starting with a sheep or lamb and going from there if that helps

I have some tried and true herbal remedies for all sorts too which I'll post if anyone is interested??

Well I kinda jumped the gun on that!! I went looking for my book where I keep all my recipes and remembered that I'd given it to my mum while she had Jake I will post them but it'll be Tuesday.

For now drink lots of honey & lemon drinks, get some fortacold and take garlic capsules and vit c if you're fighting off a cold or flu!
Beware that garlic lowers blood pressure for all those who are preggers and already have low BP.

i make the no-knead one. Used half as a plain loaf and the other half for rolls and added some seed and garlic. They were yum but will need to perfect of course. I don't think it helped that the yeast I used was past its best beofre date. I did find the crust a bit hard, so will try the teatowel thing next go.

We get our mean from FIL and BIL, they both have a bit of land and a few animals. Was hard to get into the pork as I had seen the pigs from whne they were just babies. But didn't have much to do with the cow and lamb, so that was much easier to eat.

We are lucky as we just raid their freezer when we need.

One thing with the toothpaste - does it have fluoride in it? I know people have different views on fluoride but if you're living in a non-fluoridated water area, the fluoride from the toothpaste provides protection against tooth decay.

(sorry but I've got shocking teeth so am pro-fluroide!)

Sounds like I need to get me a home kill beast and a large chest freezer!

Wow, although I should be counted in the 'keep posting' brigade, it's going to take me ages to get through these! Will definitely be trying the toothpaste (although not with peppermint essence), DH hates all commercial toothpastes so refuses to use any

Fliss, I have to say we've found having a large freezer is a godsend. We buy chickens in bulk as well as having homekill lamb, beef and pork. I'll let you know when we're next getting a beast done

And you're brave raising the issue of fluoridated water supplies I did think at least if a marauding baby or toddler got hold of the homemade non fluoridated toothpaste it's not going to poison them

What do you use for windows Babe? A lady got me onto using a wee bit of ammonia and a tiny bit of dishwashing liquid in a bucket of warm water..works well but not as convenient as having something in a spray bottle. I used to use newspaper for wiping but was always running out so have since discovered that old cloth nappies are brilliant too.

Vinegar and water for windows Genie just spray your regular cleaner mixture on the windows (well thats what I do on the very odd occasion I have to clean a window ).

Fliss someone else mentioned fluoride on a previous page when I brought up homemade toothpaste. You can get fluoride tablets from the chemist if you wish to add however a. I was brought up on herbal toothpaste with no fluoride and no fluoridated water (it was tank being on the farm) so my teeth are fine (it can be a genetic thing) and I'm abit anti-fluoride anyway and b. we currently live in a highly fluoridated water area IYKWIM so don't need it anyway.
Its definitely a personal choice thing of course and doesn't need to be controversial

Keep in mind my toothpaste has hydrogen peroxide in it which - while perfectly safe to brush with - may be toxic in large amounts. I don't add it to Jakes paste mix! I just use the above formula minus peroxide and instead of peppermint I use raspberry or strawberry natural essence very popular and no probs if he swallows instead of spits!!

Weegee thats actually a good idea - works out alot cheaper if you go halves with somebody in getting a beast!! Still get lots of meat but not such a large one-off outlay!

Lol good to know! It is good aye I come from a talented family

As for muesli bars - weird! Maybe cut down dry ingredients (what did you use btw?) and see how sticky it is then.
Use crumbly stuff as breakfast cereal maybe???

Babe, I reckon you could set yourself up as a travelling natural care consultant - people could get you in for a couple of days to make some of these products and make them a recipe book    Will go search for the bread

Choice Babe- thanks!

Def going to try your toothpaste & get blanching & stewing the broc/caulis & apples I have surplus

Katep- Did your wait for museli bars to cool completly before eating?
I was so impatient once to try my version of them, I cut it while it was still warm & it was soo crumbly. I have since made them & waited for it to cool completely before cutting & muching out on it And No problems

LOL oh yeah Glow that might'v been it!! Gotta let them cool as DP discovers every second time I make them hehe...

Hey Kel how was your easter weekend away?? Rosemary is great for lots of things. Make up a tea and use as a rinse for your hair (better for dark but possible for light too), use the tea as a facial wash - its a healing astringent herb, gargle it, rub into your scalp and leave as a treatment, steep in olive oil or white wine vinegar for homemade rosemary oil/vinegar, or make rosemary soap (I'll post a recipe and one for bath vinegar).

Yeah homemade bread can last for just as long as the processed stuff if you find the right recipe has anyone tried the white loaf yet??

LOL Fliss what a great idea except that I've posted y'all some of my recipes already so there goes a huge potential customer base anyone too lazy to try these PM me I'll let you know my hireage rates Bread recipes were on page one btw.

Enjoy girls its surprisingly satisfying being a homemaker even though its not really PC these days

Just made pear puree.

I saw that Watties do a pears & kiwifruit puree as well. Would I make this the same way?

Also anyone know if can we freeze kiwifruit whole? It's 99c a kilo at the supermarket ATM.

Hint for using active yeast & the no knead bread.

Not that I have got much further than waiting for the yeast to work, but this time I put the water in first & the yeast & sugar on top & it's frothing up like it should. Lets hope that it makes my bread rise more.

Oh yeah Kel I found that the yeast needed to go on top and it rose the bread way more too but it was so long ago that I figured it out I forgot to say

I'd puree kiwifruit and add that to pears if thats what you're asking and add a tiny bit of lemon juice to keep the colours right (I always did that to Jakes fruity meals).
I brought a bag of kiwifruit from the orchard last year at this time and froze them whole. Seemed to be fine but abit soggy when they defrosted I would puree them this year and use them for cooking more than eating. Actually I did cut some into quarters and bag them and freeze them then gave them to Jake frozen too suck on when he was teething or just for a snack (did the same with bananas) and he loved them except they got abit mushy near the end. Will do that this year too but not freeze them whole.

Katep glad the muesli bars turned out better

As for selling I don't know if anybody would buy this stuff though its so basic and easy to do yourselves. Who's gona try btw???

Thanks so much for this babe, made the vinegar spray yesterday and was really pleased !

Do you have any facemask/face wash recipes?
I have used just an egg white in the past, but would love some more ideas!
Am after a face wash that I can make in bulk and use daily, rather than having to make it every few days IYKWIM. I have really pimply skin so something thats good for that?

I though I better add that yes it looks like abit of effort and thats coz it is!
If you buy this stuff (go for the cheap pharmacy brand) then while the initial outlay might be $20-$30 you get atleast 5x more than you would from a cleanser you brought at the supermarket and you save that much again.
Using these tips will save you money and give you a healthier lifestyle but it means you have abit more work to do putting it all together.

Kel - I use the rinses for my hair but yeah too long a process and too complicated for me lol I prefer my schwarzkopf hairdye
