I am planning on making my little girl a sleeping bag, but to decide exactly what to make, I have a question:
Do sleeping bags stop them moving / crawling around the cot? My little one is just 6mths, and sleeps on her tummy. But if she doesn't think she wants to be asleep, she'll crawl out from under her blankets and all around the cot - if she's only half awake she ends up banging her head on the sides or end, which I don't like. So, if a sleeping bag will stop her being able to wriggle all round her cot as soon as she chooses to, then I'll make her a light one that she can wear any time, and a nice warm one for when we go away and she might get cold. Because other than the crawling out from under the blankets & ending up at the other end of the cot, I don't have a problem with her losing them. Also, anyone have any idea how satin-y material would go? I thought it might further reduce the ability to move because it would just slip over the sheets, but I've no idea on its flame-retardant properties... No, sleeping bags don't stop them moving. Some babies might move less, but my boy hasn't been slowed down at all by his sleeping bag. A SafeTsleep may help, but it may also just fruatrate her because she's being tied down.
I wouldn't go for satin type material - it's not warm, doesn't breathe brilliantly - it's recommended you avoid synthetic fibres and go for cotton and/or wool. There are some great threads on the Nappy Network with patterns and discussions about fabrics and how to make them. If I made one, I'd probably do a winter one with flanelette cotton on the inside and outside with a merino layer between them, though I have seen some people aren't keen on mixing stretch and non-stretch (harder to sew). You can also use quilt wadding (you can get different thicknesses) as a layer. You could also just have 2 merino layers and have a "stretch" sleeping bag though I'm not sure if it would stretch and become distorted over time. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

Nope, definately wont stop her moving (well unless you make it VERY constricting .. which probably wouldnt make for condusive sleeping  ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! when E was that age he still had safety sleep as well...and for the first few weeks in his sleeping bag he banged his head on the cot all the time..i HATTTTTED it..but he got used to it..he hasn't had blankets since about 8 months just whatever clothes(flannel pj atm) and his sleeping bag..ours are just 0.5 ones but i guess he will need a warmer one... or to maybe stay under a blanket one day:) ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

My boy moves all over the place with his homemade sleeping bag and he hits his head too but it doen't seem to bother him.
Warm marino is good and try stick to natural well breathing material. When you are making it think about easy to put them in and out. When I made mine I put a zip around the side just like a gogo bag and it is fantastic. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I made Jake a double layered merino bag and its great. He was still in a safetysleep at 6 months and it was loose enough that he could turn over and sleep on his tummy but tight enough to stop him wriggling around. Didn't stop him kicking his blankets off though so it was pjs, sleeping bag, safetysleep, blankets. Keep him warm and secure. -------------
