Ok so I have looked at this programme multiple times but never actually done it. Since the end of the summer sports season my fitness is starting to deteriorate again so I've decided to jump in and do it, starting TODAY.

Here's the link: http://www.c25k.com/ - http://www.c25k.com/

I've downloaded the podcasts from http://www.ullreys.com/robert/Podcasts/page6/page6.html - here which have good music for running to and will tell me when to run, when to walk etc.

It's 20-30 minutes a day, three days a week, and sounds perfectly achievable. But I'm bad at not following through on these sorts of things, so need some external motivators - like some virtual running buddies.

Anyone keen to join me?

Here's the blurb from http://www.coolrunning.com/engine/2/2_3/181.shtml - the original designers :

Too many people have been turned off of running simply by trying to start off too fast. Their bodies rebel, and they wind up miserable, wondering why anyone would possibly want to do this to themselves.

You should ease into your running program gradually. In fact, the beginners' program we outline here is less of a running regimen than a walking and jogging program. The idea is to transform you from couch potato to runner, getting you running three miles (or 5K) on a regular basis in just two months.

Here's today's task:

Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes.

I'll join you!

I did start the C25K about 2 1/2 months ago but ended up with a knee injury so had to stop. I went from being able to run 100m (yes, honestly) to being able to do 3.5K at a slow jog in about 6 weeks. I am not, and have never been a runner, so if you think you won't be able to, I am proof that you can!

Have to admit, I did modify the program a bit too, after about week 3, I ran as long as I could rather than sticking to the times.

Will have to check out the Podcasts

Yay!

My sister has done it - like you, got injured and had to stop - and told me when I said I was doing it: "Just make sure you don’t run too fast or go too hard. Stick to the time limits and don’t add on extra runs or minutes even if you feel like you can… that’s where I usually come unstuck."

I hate having to restrain my "crash and burn" self. I do confess, there is probably a link between pushing myself and my injury. I was pushing myself out of amazement that I was actually able to do it!

I did modify it partly because of hills around here and it was really tricky when the uphill conincided with the run while I was pushing the buggy (11kg buggy + 8kg baby + uphill = ). I think that's probably an acceptable, realistic modification. Blardy Auckland.

Now I just have to perseude Daniel that going for a run with mum is fun . And learn how to spell persuede

I guess I'm lucky on that front, my boobs aren't big enough to do much bouncing. I've heard that wearing two bras at a time can work though... plus I figure for the first week workout, only running for 60 seconds at a time won't be too bad.

Right, I'm heading off for my run, wish me luck!

I can't stand the music! Will stick to my random ipod mix and guesstimate times.

For the BF mums - I started running while still BF, and was a 14E+. Even now, I'm a flopping 14D. I initially wore a bra and a BF singlet tight which worked OK. When I stopped BF, I bought a proper sports bra - Triumph from Farmers and it's great. No flop at all. Bendon have quite a good range and if you go to one of their branded shops, they do good fittings.

LOL yeah the music is a bit cheesy, like an ad for a wannabe sports car, but I found having the verbal cues invaluable, and an obvious beat in the music is useful (a lot of the music I like doesn't necessarily have that). There's another podcast linked to on c25k.com that has only the verbal cues, which you can apparently mix with your own music using some program, maybe I'll have a go at that the next time I feel the urge to procrastinate

Well, it could have been worse, but I can't say that was easy! 60 seconds is surprisingly long I managed to do it all though. I think I get bonus points for doing it on a gravel road up a hill (coming back down again on the second half was good in terms of effort, but I don't think my calves will thank me later).

ETA and I wouldn't be able to guesstimate times, I lose count!

Make sure you stretch. And stretch on the days you don't run as well. You want to do quads, hamstrings, groin, outside back of your leg (lie on your back, lift left knee up toward chest. take right leg and cross it in front of the left knee. Pull them both up toward your chest) and calves.

Oh, you mean I can't put my feet up, catch up on here and reward myself with that bag of chips I'm now craving?

You're absolutely right, I'm stretching now!

ETA thanks for that outside leg stretch, hadn't done that one before! Took me a second or two to figure out what you meant but it really works

Hey ladies I started this in September, and finished it in December - was awesome to do just before Christmas. But then with Xmas, NY and hot summer, it went by the wayside.

I started doing it again a coupe of weeks ago and my fitness levels were still at week 5 - not too bad.

I have never been a runner, and was soooo proud to hit that 5km!! I did it in a group, and we got certificates! hehe.

Ok, I walked today, the bra I had on is sh*t. My hotmilk ones are in the wash but have a b/f tshirt so might try & double up.

I'm lucky I have an awesome walking track right across the road. Will try again tomorrow & try doing the run walk. Might get the dog fit too.

Proud I did something though We walked up Whakapapa ski field & did other walks over easter so am glad I can carry on.

Wee gee are you going to put on in the morning what we have to do? That way it will still be in the forefront of your mind & ours.

I'm in! If DH isn't home too late tonight I will start tonight otherwise tomorrow afternoon. My goal this year is to run the Singapore 1/2 marathon in December so I desperately need to get started after 4 months of NO exercise. Major hurdle is getting away from Callum long enough to go for a run because I can't run with him outside (too hot) and I can't take him to the gym with me

Great idea to put the info on here Weegee. Good luck everyone!

Oh PS, re the bra thing.. my bbs were huge (12F) before I was pregnant and I've always run with two bras - a sports bra and another sports crop top or singlet with a decent shelf bra inside it. The other thing to do is work on your chest muscles to tone up a bit too.

Im in. Ive been going to the gym though and know i can run for 5 minutes already so might skip a few weeks. I am just downloading the music now so havent heard it yet but agree being told when to run adn when to walk would be great cos at the gym my trainer does that for me and alters the treadmill so I dont have to do anything except follow orders. I will start monday though cos we are going away this weekend

Hmmm... well it's a little tricky with us all starting at slightly different times, and you're supposed to do it 3 times a week, pretty much day on/day off, and it's the same for a week... but I'll try. I'll assume for the purposes of this exercise that nobody will run on a Sunday.

Sooo, if you're starting today, here's the program:

Brisk walk for 5 minutes to warm up
(Run 60 seconds, brisk walk 90 seconds to recover) x 8, 20 minutes all up
Walk for 5 mins to cool down, gradually reducing pace to an easy walk.

Don't push yourself too hard on the run, it should be more of a jog, keep your arms down and swinging, keep your shoulders down, focus on your breathing, apparently you should theoretically be capable of talking while you're doing it.

And like Babe and Fliss so rightly pointed out, remember to stretch! If you're not running today, still stretch!

Me and DH are starting this monday. I'm having probs with the podcast though it keeps telling me its write-protected when I go to put it on my ipod?!

Weegee you don't need weights to tone chest muscles. Try doing pressups against your bench - put your feet out so you're leaning toward to the bench on a 45 degree angle and do normal pushups.

DONE!!!

Friggen heck...nearly died im sure of it hahahahaha

SO we got dressed and ready to go. It was only me and Mercedes doing it as Lesieli has a bad foot.  We went over to the school across the road and did it on the field. Alize ran around on the middle of the field playing where Lesieli was sitting timing it us. It was hilarious, she was calling start/stop for the 60sec of running so Alize kept yelling at the top of his lung "Run fast mummy, "yes mummy run fast good girl" lol. Mercedes did really well and kept up with the jogging till about the 4th set of jogging and wanted to stop so I told her just to keep walking till the 20mins was up. I was nearly about to pack it 15mins into it as I thought my legs just werent going to carry me much longer and I think Lesieli could tell b'cos she started cheering calling out "your nearly done mum, cool mum" That got me thru it.  I got home  and hung the washing thinking I was going to collaspe if I didnt rest but then had a long shower and was all of a sudden refreshed....

Intial feeling as I was walking back from the school was "I am Never doing this again" ROFLMAO but once I was refreashed after my shower the endorphins must have been pumping because I was so happy and proud of me and my team that all I can say is Bring on Saturday for day 2!!

Goodluck for everyones next run!!

Yay Kels that's awesome! Alize sounds so cute I feel your pain, on about the second run the podcast was going "keep it at an easy pace, you should be able to talk while you're running" and I was thinking "frigging heck no way could I talk right now!"

Hopefully Mercedes will be able to do it by the end of the week too And Lesieli is such a honey, you have done such a good job with her!

Definitely wasn't easy but I'm thinking the next time it will be easier - specially cos we KNOW we can do it now.

And I know what you mean about the feeling of accomplishment, even though it was only 8 minutes running all up, I had a bit of a running high for the rest of yesterday. DH came home and said "gee you look happy!"

You can do it without an mp3 player, but I do find it easier to listen to something while I'm running. Don't be deceived by the term 'podcast', it doesn't have to be an ipod specifically, you can get something perfectly good for $40 or so (probably less if you shop around) eg http://www.dse.co.nz/dse.shop/en/catalog/CTG0001520_ga - Dick Smith linky

Go girls

Not to be a party pooper (and it's only my experience ...) but I found week 2 and 3 the hardest. Week 1 I was running on endorphins and amazement and going "I'm so cool". Then the next week "This is so hard, why is this so hard, it was easier last week, I'm never going to do 5K, I'm hopeless, sob sob" (literally). By mid of week 3 I was back on track.

Kiwisj, I feel your pain! I had to go out and buy some new stuff, though I found it motivated me a bit, cos I had some nice leggings (albeit $15 from WH!) rather than my ancient shorts that kept riding up and getting real uncomfortable!

I like the sound of this, I'm really bad cos I never exercise. But I'm just trying to work out the logistics, when do you guys do it? And do you run by yourself? I know I'd do it better if I had someone to do it with but maybe the podcast thing would be enough motivation. We do live really close to a school with a field though, so unless the gate is locked that would be nice and easy.

Well I've only done it the once so far but I did it in the afternoon, by myself, while JJ was still at daycare. Next week will be the same, then for 4 weeks after that I'll be back at school (on practicum) so I guess I'll do it straight after school (hmmm then I could run on the flat!). Week 6 JJ will be in daycare 3 mornings a week so I'll try and go then and will have to take him once, or do it in the evening so DH can baby wrangle. Weeks 7 and 8 I'll be in Wellington (either side of a contact course) without a stroller but hopefully my grandmother can watch JJ for half an hour for me. Week 9 and beyond, see week 6.

The podcast worked yesterday, but if I find it isn't enough motivation going on with it I might contact one of the local mums to see if they want to go with me. Mind you the only mum I know who might be interested goes to the gym and stuff so would probably be a bit too fit for me. (AmericanBaby or BabyJ, you interested??? )

Today I made the most of DH having a half day and went in the afternoon while C was napping. We have a gym in our condo so it's not long to be away. If only the monitor worked through the 3 floors of concrete I could go during C's naps I will have to either run late(ish) at night or get up early though because DH is at work pretty long hours usually. I'm also trying to suss out with one of the other mums round here that we look after each other's babies for an hour while the other goes to the gym IYKWIM.

I'm no expert on that subject Sarah, but I think if your supply has settled it's probably ok for a short time.

Anybody starting today? Just a reminder, the week 1 routine goes:

Brisk walk for 5 minutes to warm up
(Run 60 seconds, brisk walk 90 seconds to recover) x 8, 20 minutes all up
Walk for 5 mins to cool down, gradually reducing pace to an easy walk.

Don't forget to stretch, whether it's a running day for you or not.

Day 2, here I come!

Wow Rachel, you're keen! I wasn't ready to run when JJ was only 8 weeks old (mind you I was barely allowed to drive then I spose), that's awesome!

Well I really didn't want to go for a run this evening, I was more tired today than I was when I went on Thursday because I was baby wrangling all day. But once DH got home I sucked it up, put on my running shoes and set off. I expected it to be harder than it had been the other day, just cos I so didn't feel like it, but it wasn't! I didn't go any further than I did the other day but I really started to get into a rhythm, felt like I was getting my breathing under control and at the last rep I felt like I could keep running for longer

Although I have to say I hate it that the podcast says "you're nearly done!" before the 6th run, you're not, there are 3 runs to go! (I didn't really listen to what he was saying at that point when I did it on Thursday )

Halfway through week 1 for me! Roll on week 2! I'm assuming everyone's resting tomorrow so won't post the week one schedule, but if you are starting tomorrow, it's ^^^ just up there

Hehe yeah I've had enough of bein a couch potato haha! I'm going to start on Monday, when DH gets home from work he'll walk to the park with me (that'll be the 5mins warm up) and keep Chelsea company while I do my thing (he's already super-fit, being a rugby union and league referee, and runs from work in wellington to home in lower hutt once a week (19kms) and from the train station (3.5kms) the rest of the week )

Good on you all for being motivated to do this! I'm hoping that you guys will help me stay motivated this time lol, I've tried running before but it has ended up being once a year

Good on you girls!

Weegee, I know that feeling of hitting your stride - I always find the last half of my run so much easier than the first half - my body seems to have a longer warm up period.

I'm running tomorrow (day 3). Will leave small boy at home with DH if I'm allowed! My legs have been quite tight today so have been doing lots of stretches.

And Rachel - at your DH. Runs Wellington to Hutt once a week? As you do

Have to say, I would love to be at the point where I could run 3.5 K without thinking. And dying. I'm aiming for doing a 4K circuit on a regular basis once I've built up - we have a good large block that is that distance. And 4K sounds pretty good (at the moment 1K sounds damned good!)

OK I have a plan!!! I was working out a tiny bit a few months ago and was doing a 10 minute bike ride on our stationary bike every morning before breaky and eating 6 small easy protein/carb balanced meals a day. I dropped massive inches from everywhere. I went from a 10 to an 8 in jeans, lost a whole cup size boob-wise (woohoo!!) and my tummy completely flattened out in LESS than 2 weeks! DP was doing the eating and a run every morning before breaky and lost a massive 10kg in the same time.
I'm gona start doing the bike again every morning plus my pilates every day then this every second day with DH and Jake in the stroller. We have a running track just down the road so we're gona use that. We're also getting real focused with our eating again. I hate being so unfit, I've never been so out of shape in my life!!
I'm doing before and after photos to remind myself why I can't ever be so lazy again LOL motivation!!!

Just got back from my 1st run!! Was going to start tomorrow but DH checked weather forcast for tomorrow and it looks terrible, so he made me get off the couch (hehe) and do it today! Wow I feel really good I did feel like I was going to die after just the second round lol, and my "runs" got slower and slower lol, but I managed to do it hehe, and didn't even need my asthma inhaler

Haha yeah Flissty he's crazy running from wgtn to Hutt, that's not my goal ever lol. Your 4km goal sounds good, I'll have to work out a good circuit around here for once I can run 5km (fingers crossed)

awesome! thanks weegee!

I use to run 3-4 times a week pre pregnancy and now its random when I get a chance! went for one last wed first time in ages and ran for 30min and wasnt toooooo hard! and also tried it with the pram which was alot harder! so I need to get regular! need the motivation to go 3 times a week! so thanks girls! im going to make it a priority!''

Fliss and others that run with a pram...how do you do it? do you swing one arm or have them both on the handle? was trying both ways but both felt weird! I also figure that if im running with the pram that maybe im entitled to walk up some hills?

ok tomorrow will be officially day 1 for me of running 3 times a week....will let you know how i go!

oh and hot yeah not! I wear boys shorts, hubbys ugly singlet as my old running tops are WAY to small and an even uglier bendon sports bra!

I'm back! I felt like today (day 2) was a lot easier than Friday. Great thing about running on the treadmill - I know how far I went: 3.5km today

I've just got to fit in ONE MORE run between now and Wednesday (Thurs = rest and Fri = Wk 2).

Go me

I run with both hands on, both hands off, one hand on & then switch hands, run beside it! So what ever feel comfy at the time.

Was cool today, Alia was out on her bike & I ran along beside her, felt decidedly unfit though. Will start from tomorrow for real.

Also wore my satin hotmilk bra with nursing top & everything kinda stayed in place.

Sounds like people are ticking along!

Kye, usually one arm on (the left one - I'm right handed). BUT, I know it really affects how I carry my weight through my legs - I'm more likely to have joint pain if I'm going with the pram. Be careful to try and not put weight through the pram (which is a danger/temptation if runnign with both hands on). And be nice to yourself - the pram adds an extra 19kg or so.

If people want to work out how far they're running, I www.geodistance.com - this site - it's a big motivator for me.

Wow there is no way I could run with the pram, far too awkward! Good on you ladies that do it!

Oh and for my run, I just wore some sexy trakkies (lol), a nursing bra, with a sports bra over the top (from before I was preggy, therefore before I actually had boobs) and a maternity singlet over top. Didn't feel too jiggly

Whoops I meant to come and post in here this afternoon when I got back! I finished week 1 today as well!

Today wasn't any harder than last time but it wasn't any easier either. I hit my stride sooner but my breathing wasn't as good... suspect that's because I had two days off. I know the programme says 3 times a week but I think I should just make it every second day instead... don't know yet whether that means I'll do the occasional 4th day at the same level, or whether I'll get through it slightly faster than 'normal'.

How's everyone else going? If you're still on Week 1, here's the programme:

Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 60 seconds of jogging and 90 seconds of walking for a total of 20 minutes (8 reps).

If you're about to go onto Week 2, yay you! (Think that's only Fliss so far ) Here's the Week 2 programme:

Brisk five-minute warmup walk. Then alternate 90 seconds of jogging and two minutes of walking for a total of 20 minutes (6 reps).

how long did you mums who had naturel births take before you started running again. im nearly due and cant still run 2-3 mins at a time although i dont do it often as technically im not allowed i am really keen to start asap after i get bubs out even if it means wearing 5 bras (not that i have any boobs at this stage) i figure ill get up for the early morning feed 5-6am (not sure what time it will be yet) then leave bubs with DH so go can go for a run and get it out the way. i have uni as well so need to make sure i can fit it in. i still have the 5km walk return to uni on top of that though so i hope i can keep up ok. i went for a 7km walk yesterday and 5km today so i dont think my fitness is too bad but i am dying to go for a decent run and would have to wait 2 months before i can start :S

Monikah, I had a natural birth (although C was pretty little and easy to push out lol) and felt like I could run again within a couple of weeks. Then the tiredness and sleep deprivation kicked in The biggest hurdle for me has been having someone to look after C while I exercise, so if you have that then even just keeping up your walking will help you - if you feel like trying out a jog or a run while you're walking just give it a go! That's not medical advice by the way, you probably ought to check with your LMC whether you're good to go.. my ob/gyn said I'd be back at yoga within days if that's what I wanted

I'm doing D3 of Week 1 tomorrow, wish I could go today but we're out for dinner tonight so no baby-free time today. I've been waking up pretty early though so will try get out before DH goes to work in the morning tomorrow I think.

Good luck to those of you just getting started!

OMGawd I'm unfit! I did some tonight, although I was wearing jeans which didn't help I managed 3 reps, Alia stuck around for 2 hehe. Definitely need to wear something strong over my bra.

Monikah, I started running/jogging at 3 weeks ( I do dog showing so it's kinda running but not long distance) Only down side was I wasn't wearing a decent bra & thank gawd I was wearing a maternity pad

Upside of tonight, DH is keen

Oh yeah, that brings back memories! Just walking to the letterbox was enough!

Monikah, there's no way I would have considered exercise till about 7 weeks, and then it was just walking (out of desperation as Daniel went on a sleep strike). I was just too off the planet and just trying to exist and produce breastmilk.

Meant to be W2D2 tomorrow, but I'm off for 2 days of meetings. Will take my gear with me and see if I can get to the gym, but I think we're having drinks in the afternoon to help us think, so running might not be fun after that

Ouch Katee I hope you're seeing someone about that! No good! And yep, Freesia, the ipod track tells you when to run and walk (although as Fliss pointed out, the music isn't that great).

I put together my own playlist for week 2, I sorted my songs in order of length and picked out a warmup that's 5 minutes long, then 6 songs that are all 3.5 minutes, then a cool down that's another 3 minutes. So whenever the song changes I start running again, and I have a rough idea of where in each song 90 seconds is.
