We're currently trying to decide on a cot bed for our first baby. Any opinions on whether one handed drop sides are really necessary or if 2 handed ones are really not that much fuss would be appreciated!!!

No.... what I mean is you can buy either that style that you push in with your leg and pull up/down with one hand, or the other style has 2 latches on each side of the cot rail - so you have to use both hands at each end of the rail to release the catch. !! ------------- Kat |

I would personally go for one you can drop with one hand as you are usually holding a wiggly child who doesnt want to go to sleep .. lol
Or you have a sleeping child in your arms that you dont want to wake .. so the quicker you can drop the side (with a leg or one arm) the better. ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! Yep we've got a 2 handed one as well and it's a PITA! Mind you my baby isn't old enough to have worked out how to drop it, if they do that... -------------

No not always .. when they are at bassinette level, most people just put them in over the side. Once they are at cot level they have usually been lowered because they can stand, so they are standing when you go into get them, so you tend to just lift them out. ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! Usually, but when he was smaller and the cot was at the higher level we didn't have to drop it to get him out. I always did but DH never seemed to (causing many a grrr!). Conversely if you're trying to lay down a sleepy baby then I found we needed to drop the side to put him back in gently.
And now that he's bigger and stands up and bangs the bars when he's ready to get up I lift him straight out rather than trying to drop the side with him 'attached'
It's not a biggie - I can cope with it, or I would have insisted on changing it (we were given a touchwood, the price was right!). And if you hold your mouth right you can actually drop the two handed one with one hand by doing one end at a time. -------------

No, not if the husband has got the baby out. i always drop the side when i get her out but hubby never does and it drives me nuts...cause when i go to put her to bed later and the side is up i have to do the one handed undo one side at a time maneouvre.... |

Yep my DH does that too .. he can just reach in and put her down without dropping the sides, advantage of being tall. We have a two handed drop side (Touchwood) - apparently they are supposed to be 'safer' as the baby can never drop the side by themselves, whereas technically they could figure out a single drop.
Doesn't matter anyway as we never bother to drop the side for 15 month old DD and just lift her in/out! DH and I are both quite tall though. ------------- Two little girls under 2!

Thats exactly what I thought! They would have to work out how to pull the side towards them, then lift it up and then drop it down??
