I have heard that it is very easy to get pg right after you have a baby and you can be fertile before you even know it again - ie:before your first period. A couple of my friends have had this happen - and I really dont want this. I really need the time to settle in to my new life and it would be too hard financially etc and i DONT want another baby for at least another 2 years after our duaghter is born in Sept - so my question is this - what contraception can we use? Obivously condoms but I dont trust them enough, too easy for mistakes to happen - can I go on the combined pill again (was on Estelle before) straight after - and if so how soon?. What other options are there - any ideas?

Other than condoms and withdrawal (where the man pulls out before he ejaculates - not reliable), you can take the mini-pill. You cannot go on the combined pill until after you finish breastfeeding. Your midwife should discuss all this with you at about 30ish weeks.

Well if your planning on breastfeeding then you won't be able to go on the combination pill until you finish breastfeeding. But that leaves you with condoms, minipill or an IUD.
I don't want anymore kids so I want to be ultrasafe after this baby is born....Unfortunately my man won't get the snip betcause that's like cutting off his manhood apparently!!!! So my plan is to get an IUD put in, which is done 6 weeks after the birth and I'm making my man wear condoms for just in case.

Is one of them me, Sarah?

I thought this baby was a minipill/condom failure... my new dates shows it was just a minipill failure!

I never trusted the minipill, when I was on it I fell pregnant as well (and miscarried)

You can start the mini-pill at 6 weeks. I have heard of lots of people getting preggy on mini-pill so was also using condoms but that has kinda stopped now REally dont want to be pregnant again but condoms! But yeah, like the others have said, it depends on how long you b/f for...

I was on the mini pill and i hated the time frame thing of having to remember to take at the same time everyday. I must admit I got slack and just stopped taking it and luckily didnt get preggy although I was b/f and that can be a natural contraceptive for some ppl (but not all!!) and also I dont think I am the most fertile of beings.
I guess just have a real good talk with your midwife about your options.

contraception after pregnancy? easy....just look at ur beautiful daughter and remember how much "fun" labour was....and use anything to prevent having to go thru it again until its a happier memory lol

lol kelly

i've always been on the mini pill as there's a history of blood clotting in the family so i can't take combined pills. while some people have probs with the mini pill, i never did. i'm rather fertile person, got preggy both times within the first month of trying but never while on the pill.
i plan on going back on the mini pill (femulen) after this bubs is born as i've still got about 7mths supply in my drawer!

until dean gets the snip anyway...

We used the natural family planning method between our kids and worked really well.

Then after Jayde DH got the snip.

Had my 22 week appt with my LMC yesterday and I'm already booked in for an IUD at the six week post baby check-up. With two kiddies under two and an almost teenager, there is no way I'm risking anything!!!

I am looking at the IUD option for after this baby. I hate taking the pill (mainly because I am slack and forget) and condoms do seem to 'interrupt proceedings'. I do generally use the Ana Method but this doesn't work for prolonged periods of time. I suggested The Snip to Andy who was not so keen but appears to have adopted the idea but I am not yet sure I am ready to give up the chance of having more!

The Mirena appeals 'cause despite being far too expensive ($300 +) it is long term (five years) and has a 2 in 1000 chance of pregnancy! And the added bonus of (in some cases) reducing monthly bleeding which is definitely a plus in my books!

I am having a period thingy now...which is weird cause I thought on the injection I would'nt get it. It's a lot lighter than I would expect though.

BTW, if I get pregnant on this injection, I plan to sue.

We plan on using condoms only. But then we also don't plan to put off trying for number 2 for too long. We figure as we now there is a minor fertility problem and it took us just over a year this time we don't want to wait two years and then start trying.

Paws - I had the same thing - since there were fertility issues with conceiving Andrew we thought we should try pretty much straight away - hence there is going to be a little gap between the boys.

You might not a) feel like it or b) be able to find the time after you have your bub! Me and DH have only BD'ed a couple of times in the last 13 weeks, and even then I would have rather been sleeping while I could.

I've been thinking about saving up and getting a Mirena IUD - I've heard great things about them, and they have an incredibly low failure rate.

the mirena is good as it also has proestrogen in it, hence many women find they have light periods, so it is like doubling up. If you consider the cost of the pill and doctor visits to get it over the time you would have the Mirena in it actually works out quite good

I will not be using anything but condom's. cause we want lots of kids we are not too worried I hate the pill it makes me fat and grumpy. As for anything like the iud 1) cost too much and 2) I can't stand the idea of haveing it fitted. Thing is I don't take much to get Preggy so wahoo might end up with 3 under 3.
