We have been given a cot mattress protector that has terry cotton on one side and the plasticy waterproof layer on the other. I have put in on my side of the bed under the sheet incase my waters break in bed but it so horrible to sleep on! It doesn't breathe at all and I wake up hot and sweaty! So can't imagine it would be very good for bubs. Are there any other alternatives??

You can get wool ones which breathe and are naturally waterproof - you pay for the difference though I know you can get them from Nature Baby, but probably worth shopping around!

Livvy always seemed to get hot on her mattress protectors too and I hated that they were so 'plasticky'. We discovered http://www.thesleepstore.co.nz/shop/Sleep+&+Travel+accessories/Bedwetting/Brolly+Sheets+-+Single+Bed.html - Brolly Sheets at the P&C Show last year and it is awesome. It's held up to Livvy very well when she has had little leaks, but she hasn't flooded out big time since we've had it so I can't comment on how well it would hold up in that situation.

We use woollen mattress protectors that we picked up from farmers. If you catch one of their sales they're not too badly priced. Happy finding something!

Jack's is from Farmers and is cotton on one side and plastic on the other. He can be a sweaty baby but the protector doesn't seem to bother him
