By request!

I've bumped up the two previous years threads so that those of you who don't know what the concept is can find out, and so that those of us who have done it in previous years can review our successes/failures in preparation for a new challenge!

Basically, the challenge is to cut out all "unnecessary" spending between 1 - 31 May.

I'm in for starters, who's with me?

I'll give it another shot. Last year was a dismal failure for me so I can only improve right?

My first thoughts - over the past few weeks I've been thinking a lot about decluttering my life. My house is full of stuff that I've bought and don't use but can't get rid of - clothes, toys, boxes and boxes of magazines... you get the picture.

I've been reading about decluttering your environment in OHbaby! Magazine (there's an article in the most recent issue, Autumn '09 on page 80), and thinking a lot about all the stuff I have accumulated and I have decided it's all got to go!

I've made a start - I have unearthed the spare bed in Chiara's room from under a pile of clothes and surplus junk. I've finally gotten around to listing the gremlins cot mattresses on TM and if they don't sell, Willie can take them to the tip (it seems a shame to throw them away as they are in mint condition) and I listed my Phil and Teds buggy and sold it within 2 hours of listing it.

My next plan is to declutter my own room - this means going thru the drawers and wardrobe and getting rid of anything that doesn't fit - I've been holding onto stuff for when I've lost weight but I've decided that's silly coz I can buy new stuff then. Most of the stuff will go in the clothing bin but I'll list a few more expensive things on TM. Plus we have 4 bedside drawers full of assorted papers and junk - I don't actually need the phone bills from the last 6 years .

Then I'll start on the wardrobes in the kids rooms. And tonight I plan to list on TM the box of small cloth nappies I have been meaning to list for months.

This should keep me occupied so I'm not spending money!

We're in! DH got our credit card bills last weekend.. mine alone was nearly 3 pages long Admittedly we pay for EVERYTHING on credit card and pay it off in full each month so there's a lot of little things but still. That's disgraceful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We have done a lot better with food since Callum was born, I get our meat delivered now (online order from the butcher, it's cheaper and waaaay better quality than the supermarket) and we were getting organic veg delivered too but have stopped that for the next few weeks till we move house.

My downfall atm is baby stuff. Every time I go to a mall (and there are a LOT in Singapore) I check out the baby shops ... not so much clothes, as we have about 2 years worth from gifts, but right now I'm looking for a sunhat for C and today I couldn't find one but walked out with another formula dispenser thingee and two packs of #3 teats (we do actually need those soon lol)... and then I spent almost $100 at the supermarket for THREE bags of groceries.

Emma, does it count if you spend the proceeds of your sales of TM

This is really not the month for me to give up spending .. Ive got three weeks left of work and want to spend all that money on getting ready for the baby ..

Im in although June would be better if we get our house as we will have move into it by then but the de-cluttering will definitely be me!!! I started finding stuff to list on trademe the other day then lost interest so will get onto it as we start sorting stuff into the new house and really need to save/earn as much as we can while still at the olds before we move in and have to pay the bills

I am really keen to do it too! Although I would like to wait until after my birthday

We have been meaning to save while still living out the back of my parents but having spare money is too tempting not to spend. I really need some real incentive not to just buy what ever I feel like and really need to get around to de-cluttering and listing my drawers of stuff on TM.

Hi Maya,
Instead of throwing the cot mattresses out give them to the sallies or another charity. You'll declutter and feel good

Posted By: SMoody
Date Posted: 27 April 2009 at 7:16pm
I will join but only in the sense that I will still be spending according to the last stuff I need for baby and McKayla before the birth. But want to try and stop the take aways we have been having now and then due to me being too tired.

Want to make some extra meals when I feel up to it so I can just get it out for when we need it. And then to actually declutter our house after the exams. So after the 27th of May. By then I really will be ready in the nesting phase (I am already but need to finish this studies quite soon).

Teehee Amber, they are all in nice, neutral colours too

I am kind of embarrassed to admit that cleaning out my bedroom this afternoon has yielded 4 black sacks and one box full of clothes to give to the clothing bin, a handful of things for TM and a black sack of rubbish. And that's just my room! ATM it's all sitting outside the front door looking scary but I'm going to load my car up and drop it all off tomorrow.

Saffron - I tried to give them away via the Multiple Birth Club as they were asking for stuff for a lady expecting twins but they didn't need them, and I thought about donating them to the OHbaby! Bundles of Love scheme but we have heaps of stuff for that already too, and I listed them free to a good home on Kidsgear but I can't seem to get rid of them! So now they're on $1 res on TM. There is a Sallies shop in New Lynn tho, maybe they might take them. They really are in as new condition!

Oh and the best thing about Rampant Consumerism is that you make your own rules about what is "essential" spending - so if you need to buy baby stuff etc. then that's OK. It's mainly cutting out pointless spending, stuff like takeaways, bought coffee etc.

Then again, if you consider bought coffee an essential

Emma, I'm pretty sure the Sallies will collect whatever you have to donate. That way you can build up a load of stuff, get them to take it away and feel good about it all at the same time

I'd love to participate, however we're moving back into rental next week which will result in us halving our monthly 'rent/mortgage' payments so there might be some celebrating of the fact that I will once again be able to walk into a clothes shop and buy what I want

Maybe if I held out until the end of May I could double my spending spree

Posted By: lilfatty
Date Posted: 27 April 2009 at 7:55pm
Bahaha .. I like your thinking Tishy!

Ive just gone through Issys room and now have TWO boxes of PP clothes and shoes to list on TM

At least we have now started buying her bodysuits and singlets in neutral colours so Elias can use them.

Yeah I wondered if you had got rid of it yet actually.. I guess more people need to know about kidsgear to get things moving faster... I hope you'll consider listing more of your stuff there simultaneously with TM maybe? :)

For sure, I just listed my Sea Bands on there

The only problem I have is that I usually list stuff on TM for $1 reserve and let the market determine the sale price whereas with Kidsgear you have to actually set the price and half the time I don't know how much people are prepared to pay for stuff.

Birthright might appreciate them? We send all our donations stuff to our local Birthright.

I'm in for the RC09 btw and also the decluttering! I competely cleared our house out when we moved but its slowly built back up again and our spare room is completely full of crap! Theres not even room for a bed lol got to get it sorted so this is motivation! Where do I find Kidsgear??

Ooooh I want to be in, although I will need to read the old threads so I can suss out what to do lol.
I only have one pay day left and am NOT buying anything apart from food, and spending money on bills (although have already booked belly photos for Friday) and we spent LOTS of money in the weekend on a tractor, so this is a perfect time for us
I am sooooo in for decluttering too. OMG - where to start??
This is going to be fun!!

I'm about to bail on the computer to go finish the last bits of my room - bedside tables. Then I'll be two rooms down (I did the lounge a couple of weeks ago) and only 4 to go!

Don't worry babe, with all the crap that came out of my room I'm amazed there was room for our bed - I swear my wardrobe must be like one of those magic ones which never end.

I am in it sounds like a great idea.

Ill be starting with no takeaways, using washable nappies and eating leftovers to save on food $$.

And Maya decluttering sounds great I should do that to earn extra $$. *Gets out OhBaby Magazine*

Hmmmm, maybe not sure. I do get most of my pay taken off me and we do need to save for xmas holiday. I can't do without my V and smokes and Coke Zero - but with having surgery in May that might really help me to cut down on the smokes (hang on I just got a carton brought for me , so I can save that smoke money for May - someone just has to email me her bank account number aye Emma ).

Hmm wonder if i can convince DP spending money on cloth nappies is saving money as i need to do another bulk order soon. I never used cloth as mums washing machine was getting such a hammering with all us extras being here so moving out would be a good excuse to start.

*off to price out on trademe*

I'm in as well.. I feel so guilty that I don't have any income, I am desperate for ideas on how to save / make more money!
We have lots of debt and there is so much that we want to do in the next few years..

I have been meaning to declutter my wardrobe and the spare room, and i'm also thinking of putting my wedding dress on TM. I'll get on to that tomorrow!
Keep the great ideas coming please ladies!
I'm off to check out the previous RC threads

ETA No more 'CBA' making dinner and buying takeaways! DH usually takes dinner leftovers to work for lunch the next day, but when we have takeaways he has nothing for lunch so he ends up buying food and a few drinks! This happens once a week, what a waste of money. I think I will start a menu plan this week.

I'm thinking about doing this....the next 8 or so weeks are going to be interesting with DH off work, so it means we're going to HAVE to not buy takeaways when I CBA cooking, and he's going to have to make his lunch because he can't get anywhere to buy it hehe. I seriously need to declutter and go through my drawers and throw out a LOT of clothes, or put on TM. This will also help for when the babies are born....I have recently got rid of nearly 5 boxes of "stuff" that was stored in the spare room...

I'm also really bad with magazines at the moment I buy them and take them up to DH's hospital room so if he's dozed off, I just sit and read (nice and relaxing and no one can harass you)....my daily soy hot chocolate is essential though - and I have changed from a large to a regular!!

ETA: Ok, and have just been to Kidsgear and there's a lot more stuff on there and I've already found at least 4 classifieds I'm going to buy Now if only someone would list some nice maternity clothes that would fit me!!!

I'm doing well with my clean out - got rid of 5 nappies last night and the two cot mattresses today - well, they're all still here but I have buyers for them all, and possibly for the rest of the nappies

I did spend $146 at KMart this morning, but I feel justified seeing as it is my reward for decluttering our bedroom, plus I got some great deals - a 400-thread count Egyptian cotton sheet set for $45 and a cool cream and gold duvet cover for $31 plus a valance and two throw pillows 30% off. Plus, it's not the 1st of May yet so my spending ban hasn't started

I think i'm on the right track.. today I went through all my clothes and have just finished listing them on TM, 19 listings
Sooo hopefully they all sell!
And tomorrow I will do DD's.

I love baking, and especially eating baked goodies hehe.. but I don't have an oven
Every month though I pop over to my mum's and spend a day baking muffins, scones etc and freeze them for DH's lunches.

DH told me today he was thinking of getting tints on my car.. now I have to talk him out of it, as I think its unnecessary spending! DD has a black shade on her window and that is my main concern, but he is thinking of doing it for looks

i'm glad its not may yet! had kfc the night before last and bought a dvd last night aaaah but we did watch money man...and i was shocked at the cost of what they were spending! i hate to think what he would say to us...not that we are anywhere near as bad as what those two were like!! (which is a relief)

so my goal is to definately cut out takeaways, bake more and not spend money on little things that add up like dvd's etc.

Ok I have to admit - I went and brought lots of nice face cream yesterday because I was out and because it wasnt May yet!

Im really going to struggle with this but I think it will be good for me!

How about we have a list of names who are in it and everything that they buy that isnt necessary has to go down against your name so at the end you can see how much money you wasted?

OMG I definitely will not be able to let DH do the shopping this month. The amount of non-essential things he just came home with is shocking.

In our freezer we currently have choc chip icecream (not just any brand - Movenpick) and there's a 4 pack of frank's ruby red grapefruit juice in the fridge (apparently it was on sale so it's ok??) and that's just a couple of the highlights.

The worst thing is I can't even grump at him since he says he got them for me since I feel so sick.

I have some clothes I want to list on TM - that will be my aim this weekend.

I'm in. We re-jigged the budget last night and I am going to try really hard to cut back on non-essentials. DF is pretty good though, its just me. We have to save for our wedding in Feb and now this little one on its way. Savings are definately a must for us.

WTG Babe! Good decluttering! I haven't done anything else significant since my room, but my nanny commented on how tidy the house is, and my TM auctions are ticking along nicely.

Booboo - that's a good idea! I'll start a list and then whoever wants to can copy and paste and add their name. Then come May 1 we can add in any non essential spending we do. Or we could do it the other way and put in the things we *didn't* buy so we can see how much we're saving? Like "today I saved $3.30 coz I didn't stop at the dairy for a V on the way to work" etc.

I don't think I could do this as I don't think I spend un neccesarily and since its not may yet I don't feel bad about going shopping for my engagement ring (sorry its all I'm talking about at the mo cos I'm excited lol).

DP is ten times worse then I am. He will just suggest we go out for lunch rather then trying to fend for himself as I've normally been up for awhile by the time he gets up and is hungry I've eaten breakfast and am about an hour off lunch. Hmmm don't take him food shopping much anymore we always end up with stuff we don't need. I must admit that things like packs of chips are a neccesity for me at the moment as I need to snack during the day and theres just so much fruit you can eat.

Don't need to worry about coffee as DP works in a restaurant so drinks all the coffee he wants and brings home soft drink for me on the odd occasion that I want one YAY for nt spending lol

We're almost a year behind on our rates LOL we've owned our house for less than a year so obviously haven't paid anything yet coz too disorganised we're gonna stick with this for 2 months and plan on being debt-free except for mortgage and qcard by then. so...may the first ay....well this month is going to be veeery interesting....

haha booboo good on you for owning up! shame i didnt realise yesterday was the last day or i would have gone and stocked up on things...dammit i probably shouldnt be saying that either

ok so my necessary spending is groceries (which are gonna be very basic and no treats (hopefully), my car, my kitty....oh and maybe a celebratory meal if DP finally proposes...ooh and mothers day but i am going to try and make something instead of buying this year...hmm let me see..no birthdays this month...ok i think thats it.

my unnecessary things i don't want to buy are takeaways, spending extra at the grocery store for "nibbles" and buying dvds etc at the warehouse. honestly that shop is so annoying the amount of money it seems to get from us lol

so what are all your guys necessary / unnecessaries?

Ok I need to cut back on buying lunches, buying DVDs that I never watch, photoframes, other "house stuff" when we seriously dont need ANYTHING, new pills that "apparently" make you feel better, charms for my pandora, takeaways, crap at the supermarket that we never end up eating, pedicures, face cream like its going out of fashion, V on my way to netball - I mean really how stupid is that, lunches, powerade, CLOTHES! Pjamas oh and more CLOTHES! Thats about all really not much

So Ive got a HUGE month ahead of me.

I just brought my lunch then too because I didnt bring anything this morning - thinking it was the 1st tomorrow.

So Day1 Booboo - Spent $12 on crap.

Hell this is going to be hard!

Phew, glad I remembered it's Day 1 BEFORE I go to the shops later this morning!

Right, so our necessary spending is -
Groceries (obviously)
Transport
Doctors (Callum's due for some more jabs later this month )
One dinner out per week (it's practically the law in Singapore )
And lunches - DH refuses to take a packed lunch partly because it's actually cheaper to eat out here than take a sandwich (truly) and mostly because it's a good excuse for him to actually get away from his desk each day. So I get the same budget for lunch as well $35/week = one pretty nice lunch out for me and C!

Trying to cut down on -
Coffees/cake out
Impulse buys in baby shops!
Books/magazines/scrapbooking materials (I REALLY should join the library!)
Taxis when I could take the train
Lunching more than once a week
And dinners out

OK uhmmmm.... I want to cut out takeaways completely, lunches when I go into town (I always pack a lunch for J and don't for me thinking I won't be hungry til I get home then I starve and buy something ), books, little bits and pieces that we def use but don't NEED IYKWIM, material (My sewing room is a shocker!!!! I have like 7 banana boxes full and need to actually start making things more often!)... I can't really think of anything else though.
My biggest goal is to declutter and actually track where our money is going. Thats probably the biggest problem - it disappears even when I think I'm being so miserly

Going for dinner tonight for at 30th but all paid for last week YAY

Petrol
Brought lunch once a week for DH
Sushi for us both on the weekend - only once after our sport (Sat)

Trying to cut down on -
V drinks
takeaways
crap in the shopping trolley

see how we go... brought my lunch from home today.. DH is buying his but that is ok

Haha BooBoo, you might actually give Ginger a run for her money .

My non-spends - takeaways, lunch on the way to work, V drinks and cookies on the way to school just coz I need change for Maya's lunch, random clothing spends on stuff the kids don't need coz I can't even close their drawers...

I'm keeping Maya's lunch spend tho, it's only $6 a week and I make her lunch every other day and she gets so excited about "Sushi day" that she'd be disappointed.

Friday is usually takeaway day coz Maya has gymnastics and doesn't finish till 5.30pm which means I get home too late to cook and it's easier just to get McD's on the way home. But tonight I've been really organised - while the three little ones were eating lunch I threw together a chicken parmagiana (frozen Tegel Takeouts schnitzels, mixed veg, pasta sauce, cheese sauce and grated cheese) and put it in the fridge so all I need to do tonight is bake it for 1/2 hour and cook a few chips. So I'm feeling quite virtuous about that .

BooBoo....what a booboo!! hahahahaha

i forgot one major thing on my list that i don't need....spending money on book on TM! i always justify it like oh it was only $1 (yea plus the postage!) and my bookshelf is now overflowing...need to get down to the library more methinks.

oh and i want to start going to the farmers market to buy more fruit and stuff instead of buying junk at the supermarket.

He He! Well done Emma and so you should feel virtuous!
i'm in. I am going to cut down on take away coffees (I have one everyday) and then just other unnecessary spending that I sometimes do if I am in a shop eg things kids can do without. I have just started meal planning so am going to make an effort to just stick to what is on the list and not to make extra trips to the supermarket.
The coffee is the big thing for me! It sounds ridiculous but I just LOVE my daily flatwhite. it gets me through my sleep deprived days. Was watching the 40 hour famine adds though and have decided that no brought coffees can be my famine and I will give the money I save to World Vision.
I can't think what else I spend money on but I guess I will realise over the course of the month when I try and restrict myself!

Or essentials are groceries and petrol

I think we are going to aim for $100 a week on groceries and anything we have left we can use on any extras that we really need (like DH's lunch on a Saturday or going to a friends for lunch and having to bring something)

I have set $400 for my birthday (my annual clothes shop) As well as a dinner or lunch out (and maybe something in there for DH to buy me a present)

Our biggest problem is we end up spending a whole lot on who knows what, trips to foursquare for icecream and then end up buying a whole lot. I dont know where the rest goes but we are definately spending far too much at the moment.

Cool...day one & I haven't been anywhere

I wanna cut down the unneccesary take aways too. I am now giving DH sanity money so if he wants to spend that then that is fine, I am giving myself the same BUT I am going to save it for something I want to actually buy, like more Itti Bittis...yep putting hand up, I'm a freak!

Weekend will be interesting, we have things that we are doing in the weekend which may entail spending money but am not sure yet.

I also am going dog showing next weekend = extra petrol, I will take snacks & then after that we are going to Chch so that will involve spending

Yes I'd like to be able to track our money better too....right...job tonight is to gather all cards....

Our essentials are groceries, bills, petrol, and an allowance for DP and I. The rest of the money is going into the savings account. So day 1 has gone well so far had a free salad from the salad shop as had filled my stamp card and now im going to make a quiche to take to a shared tea!!

BooBoo, you have just made me feel 100x better

Day 1 round up in Singapore (as I have no more plans to leave the house)
Just been to the supermarket and I took the train there instead of a taxi Bought Thank You cards for all the gifts we've received for Callum (essential and long overdue), a sun hat for C (also essential) and $50 worth of fresh veg, milk, yoghurt and cheese Avoided grabbing a cheeseburger (savings = $2 lol) but had to have a coffee at Starbucks so that I could feed C while I was there. And taxi home because I needed to get C to bed!

Extras that could have been avoided - 5pack bibs from Mothercare $21.

Not the most auspicious start!

I'm in! I started last weekend cutting down and we didn't spend any extra money on food all week (that's HUGE for us) and just used up what was in the pantry and freezer.

Last night was takeaway night, which we just decided that Friday's will be. Alot better than any night of the week, as we typically would eat takeout at least 2 -3 x (esp as i'm the cook of the household, so if I can't be bothered, we grab takeaway). Also had subway as Layla had her first playdate so Panda and I grabbed subway for lunch.

So essentials for the month is just groceries, petrol and paying bills. Oh, it's my bday on Tuesday and Bailey's 13th on Friday, so DH will be spending up large next weekend on Bails, but apart from that, will stick to the new budget I created. YAY

Coffee date confessions - I ended up spending $11.30 coz I did have cake as well. BUT when everyone else had a second round of drinks, I had water. Plus a friend gave me some $50 she owes me so it was actually a profitable excursion .

Todays aim is a nil spend - we're taking the girls to a show today but we got the tickets free, and I'm making a picnic lunch to take with us so we don't have to buy drinks etc. there. Not sure what's for dinner, am tempted to turn the crock pot on seeing as it's so bloody cold!

Yesterday was bad....I bought morning tea (hot choccie, a small pie and a piece of slice - $12) then lunch (Maccas because I ran out of time - $9.20). That was all though!!

Friday nights, instead of takeaways, we have toasted sandwiches - easy as to make, quick and can be healthy. DH has bacon and egg ones.

The next few weeks will be easy while we're at the in-laws - no groceries etc. We're also saving with fuel, as only running one car so $40 fuel will probably last 3 or so weeks instead of the usual $60 a week. It all goes in a separate account.

Have also saved $200 a year by switching DH's car insurance over to my work.

And I plan to start the meal planning soon too....and see how it goes...we spend $150 a fortnight on groceries at the moment but I want to get it down because we buy a lot of crud.

Essentials this month - pay the plasterer, and the lady who made my wedding dress...rates....and normal other bills. Oh, and what groceries we do need (lunches for me etc).

Today DH wanted to drive to Taihape to buy new jeans When I was out before I stopped into Spotlight & got iron patches for his jeans, you can get invisable ones!

Over my shoulder I can hear Alia saying Dad can we go to town, He say why? She says to get stuff ROTFLMAO.....maybe Alia should be doing this!

It's been sooo cold that Layla has been snuggled on me all day, so we're just chilling out Had pizza for lunch from last nights takeaway leftovers, and will be making chicken stirfry for dinner.

I am hanging out though for chocolate buttons, so may spend $3 .... lol but that's it! woo hoo this is awesome!
