I'm interested to know at what age it's ok to introduce marmite or vegemite. I know the salt content is quite high, so that's my reason for concern, and yet I know that these spreads are good for baby sandwiches when bubs gets to the finger food stage.

Thomas LOVES Marmite. He has it on toast every second day and has done since 8 months.

I've just started giving Jackson marmite on toast. He loves it too. Makes a hell of a mess, but is very amusing to watch.

My Plunket nurse has suggested I give my DD marmite on cruskits, she is only nearing 5 and a half months. I haven't yet as I still think she is a bit young for that.
Good point about the salt mountaingoat, I hadn't thought of that..

I started giving Marmite to Maddi when she started finger foods (about 7-8 months) She loves it! I just love the little goatie she gets every time she eats it. Of course she has o smear it all over her face before she eats it
What else is there to put on toast when they are little??

cian LOVES marmite on toast or cruskits -- i was a bit worried about the salt content, but like Daizy said, there's not much else to give them when they're this little. jam's too sugary and at least marmite has lotsa good stuff in it as well as the salt!

Marmite is better than vege, due to the iron in it (even though vegemite tastes the best!)

Good to hear it's even endorsed by plunket! Thanks for the feedback.
True, there is not a lot else to put on toast that's not sugary. Although there are cheese, vege and liver spreads you can make at home, but they do go off pretty quickly.

you can also put marmite/vegimite on bread, cut off the crusts, roll it up into a sausage shape and micrwave for 1min or 1min 30 sec (depending on your microwave) - they go very hard and make great rusks for teething! (note - they do smell quite bad after you have nuked them but they are very popular with little ones)

Clara loves Marmite, but I try not to put too much on because of the salt content. It's about moderation - we only put a very small amount of salt in our bread and don't add it when we're cooking.
Daizy and Gyspynita - peanut butter's ok, right? (well according to that Watties chart it is) - she likes peanut butter too...

Our plunket lady said marmite and peanut butter are both fine, so we give Jack a bit of either on toast too, he loves it! Know what u mean about the mess though!!

I think Hayden would eat just about anything if I put vegemite on it!!!! He was having a tidgy bit of vegemite on baby rice cakes from 5 mths but not every day, now he has it on toast and it gets the happy food noise seal of approval! I saw somewhere a suggestion to use sugar free jam for babies, like the weight watchers type ones I guess but I'd rather baby have natural sugar than that artificial sweetner stuff most sugar free products have in them. Avocado on toast/crackers is very popular too.

Yeh, not so sure on the artificial sweeteners. The closer to nature the better, I'm sure!

yeah - that's why i was staying clear of peanut butter... that and we only have crunchy in the house (mmmm crunchy... ) and didn't know how he'd cope with the lumps!
i was going to make some hummus and see how that went - has anyone tried it?

Crunchy peanut butter: more chance of choking. Smooth peanut butter is ok at Stage 3 (around 8 months onwards) according to the most recent Plunket/Watties chart. But if you have a family history of peanut intolerance, it's best to steer clear of it as long as possible.
Hummus sounds nice! Haven't done it yet ... will probably introduce that about Stage 3, 'cos I know that chickpeas are pretty fibrous and hard for even adults' stomachs to handle sometimes ;)

Caden loves marmite and vegemite on toast or bread! He has had it since about 7 months old.
He has it once a day, sometimes twice a day.
