Thought I would share the latest news on Phenergan that I didn't know.
I went to the Dr's today and mentioned that I was going to get Phenergan for my boys in case they threw a hissy on the plane to the U.K.
Good timing because she went to a Paed info meeting run by Simon Rowly (who's a top Paed in NZ/ runs NICU etc - very onto-it nice guy) and he said the latest on Phenergan is that it shouldn't be used on babies under 1(and even to be cautious for those under 2). It has caused cot death in infants (even though our boys are out of this risk) and has also caused other serious reactions in babies.
Thought I would share this info as I've mentioned that I'm going to use Phenergan to heaps of mums and no one yet has suggested not to use it.

also to add to this, my DD was prescribed Phenergan for an allergic reaction at Christmas time and it made her go hypo - she was bouncing off the walls! I am never giving it to her again or Baby Nurofen for that matter, that made her go hypo too!

Peachy: I've been told by everyone that there is a 10% chance of it having the opposite reaction i.e. bouncing off walls. So, I was going to trial it beforehand if I was going to use it but won't now. Oh dear though, you must have not been a happy mum!

Daniel was given it once in hospital to make him go to sleep and we didn't have any problems with it at all.

lol! The only thing worse than having 2 grumpy babies on the plane would be having 2 hyper babies
We had grumpy babies on 1 of our flights at Xmas, it was very tiring but we all survived

Maya bounced off the walls all the way from Sydney to Bangkok en route to London - Phenargan wasn't such a great idea
Lil miss had it at Starship when she had chicken pox to help with the itching and help her settle as she got really, really sick with the pox.
It's always been used cautiously in infants due to a minimal risk of respiratory failure, the Medsafe guidelines recommend it not be given to children under two either.
This from the Medsafe info sheet:
"Children may experience paradoxical excitation with promethazine.
This product should not be used in children under 2 years of age, due to the potential for fatal respiratory depression.
Caution should be exercised when administering promethazine to children as there is potential for central and obstructive apnoea and reduced arousal. Excessive dosages of antihistamines in children may cause hallucinations, convulsions and sudden death."
