I was watching C4 today and saw Britney's new music video - If You Seek Amy. Shock horror!!

Has everyone picked up on the phonetics? There are probably millions of nine year old girls singing along to this song, hopefully having no clue what they are saying.

"Love me, hate me, say what you want about me,
But all of the boys and all of the girls are begging to if you seek Amy..."

And while we're on the topic of inappropriate songs... Lily Allen's "Not Fair" is pretty wrong too!

The things you find bad once you have kids!!!

Lol Kiwilaurie - My Dad never picked up that it was actually 'If you seek Amy' ...for weeks on end he was going around seeing the phonetics and questioning how a song like that could be aired on radio and telly.

Silly man

I too am amazed that she can get away with a song like that, even being titled something different to make it ambiguous, doesn't make it any better now does it?! And I think today's generation clue on much faster to adult life and what sex is, swear words etc...back in my day I wouldn't have been any the wiser though.

If its any consolation my Mummy left me in the freezer aisle of the supermarket when I was just 3.5 years old, singing 'Like a virgin, touched for the very first time' very loudly, accompanied by some pretty provocative dance moves, apparently.

That's it, Jody is never going to listen to the radio again! lol, that's got to be more embarrassing than the standard supermarket tantrum...

I think it is so gross. there is another song that goessomething like "you make my head spin right round when you go down" - fantastic!

I feel like such a prude when i say this kinda stuff, but i really think those songs are gross.

Agreed! There is definitely too much overt stuff out there! Then they wonder why more and more kiddies are getting knocked up

Though can someone explain the if you seek amy thing to me??

Babe - it took me a while too...say the words slowly, looking away from the PC screen...you will see they 'spell' a swear work that is slang for BD...(hope that helps!)

Lizzle, I'm with you on the 'go down' song...how is that OK???

Personally i like the songs and i think if you seek amy is pretty clever really. You spin me right round the old version was a fav of mine for awhile and i think the new version is good too.

The way i see it is that they are just songs and unless you explain what some of the songs mean to your children you'll prolly find they have no idea what they mean they just like the tune and i dont see any harm in that.

When it comes to swear words and dirty words josh will grow up knowing them and mostly what they mean but told not to use them in some situations or around certain people. Most kids only use them or like those songs because their parents bring them up thinking its naughty or taboo etc which just creates an attraction to them IMHO. I know as a kid my fav song was who the f**k is alice mostly because it said f**k and i was told it was a naughty word.

Couldn't agree more. My 8 year old niece is a HUGE Britney fan. She knows the Amy song off by heart and Womaniser etc and has absolutely no idea what she is singing. She doesn't even think about the words, just likes the melody and beat. She sings "You're a womaniser baby" and points at me! I started to explain what a womaniser was but she just looked at me blankly

Ohhhhhhh *penny drops* I have heard that song many times and was shocked! I thought the things Britney can get away with these days....

Now I get it - not that that makes it any better!

I think the music out there is pretty shocking, even if they dont understand what it means its better not to have it out there at all. I hardly ever listen to the radio, mainly CD's and daddys music at home.

I think if no-one makes a big deal of it little kids quite often don't even realise what the song even says.
My sister and I were watching Grease a few weeks ago and I realised that I sung along with it for years making up my own words - cause I certainly wasn't singing the right ones to Greased Lighting:

You know that ain't no sh*t we'll be getting lots of t*t

and

You know that I ain't bragging she's a real p*ssy wagon Grease lightning

but yes I was a bit shocked the first time I heard Britney's song as you do tend to think of her having a younger audience.

If you seek Amy, sounds like F U C K Me... (spelling out the letters of the word, not the word as a whole IYKWIM)

ETA I love that "you spin my head right round..." song, I think its really catchy. And there is no way at all that Ashleigh would have any idea what it really means. What kind of age do you guys think children would grasp the concept of "going down"? (serious question lol)

I hadn't heard the song till I read about it on here - I never hear the radio unless it's Chinese opera in a cab So I looked it up on youtube (coz I couldn't work it out by reading the title either). If you search for the song title there's actually a video that comes up with all the lyrics as well. But it's very obvious once you listen to the song, Bizzy

I wonder if all the sexual references in todays music are having an effect on young girls in particular. they already know that what britneys wears and other images do imo children are growing up far to quickly and not being able to be kids for as long as possible.

Kings of Leon - 'head while I'm driving' on Sex on Fire

Saving Abel - ''when you go down on me, in between the sheets'

it's everywhere. And the good old songs aren't exactly innocent either (like how Grease was mentioned).

Oh also there was that Foxtrot Uniform Charlie Kilo song a couple of years back - a whole song to spell out a naughty word, but I guess it sells aye.

I'm with wrx though - this is what society is like these days and most kids don't even get what the lyrics are. Whether that's right or wrong for them to be singing them in the first place, who knows, but it doesn't necessarily mean their innocence is being corrupted by the music, they're just copying.

ah don't lie Steph, you weren't 3.5 , it was just last week

C turned around to a poor old couple at the supermarket when she was 3, put her hand on her hip and said "don'tcha wish your girlfriend was hot like me ?"

I think if a song is what makes your child go off and have lots of sex at a young age, then quite frankly , something is very wrong there .

As far as Grease goes, for years my friend and I thought Sandy said "meditate your erection "
It wasnt , but I always giggle when I hear the song .
TBH, John Travolta could say anything in that movie and I would have still forgiven him , how could you not with that gorgeous smile ?

I was singing along to the head spinning song and DH said "do you know what its saying? listen properly" then he laughed at me for not getting it!

theres another song (im sure its different to the head spinning one" that i didnt even register until he pointed it out that it was his fav part cos it cracked him up! it goes "ugly B***h lights off, pretty B****h lights on" i had to laugh!!

and OMG i didnt realise those were the lyrics to grease!! how slow am i!!?? lol

I agree that there are a lot of sexual references in songs, from ages ago as well, but it seems that songs from "yesteryear: were more subtle in what they saying. "all the boys and all the girls are begging to F U C K Me". how can that be clever? it's just blatant and has no musical value at all. the only point of it, is Britney saying how "provocative" she is. yuk yuk yuk.

and perhaps the kids don't uderstand, but that doesn't mean I'll subject them to it (and subject me to trying to explain it)

BTW if you are looking for a more subtle song - try the lyrics to Like a Prayer. diiiirty

Wow I never got that (Britney song), I just thought it was a lame name for a song. Amazing how you can hum along to songs or sing (in the car no one watching) and not even click as to what they are saying.
There's heaps of songs with rather interesting lyrics and you just don't give it a second thought. I like that spin round song to, very catchy.
To be honest I think over the years we have been bombarded with it, so it takes a lot to be shocked anymore - nothing really surprizes me or am I being cynical.

'ill take you to the candy shop - ill let you lick the lollipop'

have you heard im on a boat? Man that song cracks me up

some older songs tho i grew up with and dont think i was corrupted by (can you tell i grew up in the 80's/90's)
- salt n pepa wasnt exactly subtle - 'i wanna have sex baby'
- i wanna make you sweat by UB40/bob marley
- pouges - You're a bum
You're a punk
You're an old slut on junk
Lying there almost dead on a drip in that bed
You scumbag, you maggot
You cheap lousy faggot
Happy Christmas your arse

I just can't believe I never figured out what she was saying before , now it seems so obvious !

C has seen some of the dirtier music videos , eg Christina Aguilera's Dirrty , is pretty ....dirty , I just tell her that just because they dance like that , doesnt mean she gets too (until she turns 18 , gos to a pub and can make a fool of herself with me blissfully unaware)
If she comes to me at 16 or whenever and says she is pregnant , I wont be blaming the tv, or the music, or the videos, I'll firstly blame her, the guy and myself for not instilling enough values in her , if values are instilled strongly enough , then what they listen to shouldn't make as much of a difference , your child doesn't HAVE to think those songs , provocative vids etc are acceptable, drum it home that those girls are to be pitied for lowering themselves like that

-------------

Meant to add , im not saying show your children the clips , or make them listen to the songs, Im meaning if they do happen to see it (eg you don't change the channel fast enough ) then really drum it home how sad it is that the girls have lowered themselves etc (however you want to word it )
As for the lyrics , I would just tell them they are not old enough to understand , and you will tell them when they are (by which time they would have hopefully forgotten )

*Ahem* I was 18 when i fell pregnant and my parents instilled lots of values & did so very strongly, they never brought alcohol or cigarettes (both don't smoke or drink) into the household and i was NEVER allowed boys over, I was brought up not to swear (I have my moments these days but back then i was pretty darn clean cut) and I always had a curefew of 10pm. Heck I even went to catholic school growing up.

I'm sure your Mum did her best to raise you with lots of values and morals too...My point is that u can instill as many values as you like, doesn't mean its going to stop a girl from falling pregnant out of wedlock.... IYKWIM

ETA: We all have our moments, we all make mistakes - it's how you deal with whats thrown at you, that shows the kind of person you are. I for one, would not change my boy for the world. Thinking that I could have aborted him just to appease everyone else makes me sick to my stomach!

Ummm, Thats what Im saying .
Sometimes its going to happen but I don't see the point in blaming music for it .
If anyone gets pregnant , then its the ones having sex who are to blame , not the music they listen to .
All you can do is your best to instil values, and if it still happens , then its noone elses fault , but the ones having sex.

Ahh I was more gunning at the quote about blaming yourself for not instilling enough values, if C was to get preggers etc, what I'm trying to say (and should have worded better obviously) is that instilling values is one thing, but regardless of how the kids brought up, values or no values ...media or no media, it really has no bearing on how they turn out. ETA: - to an extent, clearly if they're brought up in a gang environment they are likely to continue that cycle iykwim

So we are on the same page, I'm just not making much sense clearly

Think I might just shut the hell up now.

Totally agree. My kids have always heard all the song I listen too. They dont really understand the lyrics even when they can sing them word for word (alize can sing PUSH by Enrique) . I have never had any bag language problems and my 13year old is a very polite, intelligent teenager. She now hates most of my music esp eminem as her prefernce is hiphop (althou her fave song was superman when she was younger lol).

I think its great when parents want to keep them away from all the nasties in society including all the over sexual and violent context in songs, movies, magazines etc. But reality is parenting comes down to the basic princples of what sort of kids we are bringing up. So if your kids are brought up in a loving, supportive and nuturing environment they are not going to turn into numphoes at 12yrs listening to Britany or murders listening to Eminem.

I dont think you are bad if you dont like your kids listening to bad lyrics either just like I dont think your bad if your do. JMHO lol

I heard that in some countries they made them change it to "If you see Amy" so then it's only F U C A ME which doesn't really make sense (lyrically). But I guess at least less offensive. I spent ages when it first came out trying to work out which version she was singing.

For those who arent quite sure yet what she is really saying here is the vid (note the classy inuendos in the imagery):

I hate all this kind of stuff..... its also really crap music, and she cant even sing in tune without a pitch shifter filter applied to her voice.

I heard 2 little girls singing outside the supermarket the other day- busking, and the songs lyrics were shameful... Id be horrified to hear my daughter singing them.

All these songs are about the same thing... image, sex, fashion, popularity, gang banging..... I wont go on, but I do believe it has an impact on a young person.

I work on the same lines as wrx at this stage while my own isn't here. Our 4yr old godson has grown up listening to everything we listen to and quite enjoys dancing away to all the tunes thats more what hes interested in then anything.

When he was about 2 he couldn't say t properly so when he saw a truck it was f.ck which i had told dp about but he didn't process properly until he heard him say it one day. We all swear around him and his little brother and sister, including his parents and he to my knowledge has never used it and if he has has been told it was an inappropriate word for a child to use and probably got a hiding at that.

I personally believe the more sheltered a child is brought up can lead to a more rebellious teenager. DP was brought up extremely christian, parents are pastors and he before we met was into everything, drugs, sleeping with girls from 13 etc. His old churches minister got pregnant out of wedlock and she wouldn't of had any sex talk or anything with her parents, it would have been assumed that it wasn't happening.

I have been raised in quite a liberal house, as soon as dp started staying at my place for a night mum booked me in at doctor to get me on birth control, and yes we are having a child out of wedlock now, but that is 8yrs later and we have been living together on our own for 4 of those years. Am only pregnant because I forgot to get my birth control when he was away whooops but we were wanting it. So I think it all comes down to the person you are and not controlling your kids too much.

I personally grew up listening to the beetles as mum and dad were 35 when they had their first kid so definitely their generation, and come on lucy in the sky with diamonds, everyone knows what that is.
