Don't mind me, I'm just having a whinge...

I had to take my navel piercing out yesterday... I only had it done on Dec 30 last year, it was my 2nd anniversary present from Nat. Yes, I had a preggy one in at the moment rather than the original banana bar, but my body rejected it!

I'd bought a maternity piercing after finding out I was pregnant, and once it was in I started to go red and itchy around the holes... I just thought I was getting an infection! I cleaned it really well, and didn't worry. After a couple of weeks, one of the beads came off the end, so I put my original one back in and organised a replacement pregnancy belly bar.

My "infection" went away, and my new preggy piercing arrived... I swapped bars, and slowly my bellybutton started getting red and really sore. It got to the point by the end of last week that my clothes bumping it was uncomfortable, then I kept waking up Saturday night every time I rolled over because the sheets brushing against my tummy hurt! Nat ran his hand up my side and touched my belly bar by mistake, and I nearly jumped off the bed it hurt so much! I got a huge fright, as I was fast asleep!

My family was visiting us for the weekend, and my Mum is a nurse. I showed her my tummy, and she said that I was rejecting the bar... since I took it out, it is no longer so sore and the redness was gone by last night. Hopefully I'll be able to get my bellybutton repierced one day.

That's a bummer Becca. I also have my naval pierced and had an appointment with my midwive on Friday and she said to me that I would probably have to take it out soon - I was gutted and said that I would feel "naked" without it. I have had it for around 7 years now

I had to take my out when I had laproscopic surgery last year. I thought I would just be able to put it back in after the cut they had made inside my bellybutton healed but it did the same as yours and went all red and sore    I miss having it now

I was so pleased I'd got an actual preggy bar, which is about 4 cm long and flexible plastic, so as my belly grew I wouldn't rip my piercing. It's so frustrating that I can't use the damn thing!

Is it reacting cause you have gone from metal to plastic or did you have a plastic one in before?
So you do get your bellybutton done again (a similar thing happened with my tounge and never got around to getting it redone... 4 years later!!) maybe say - "when bubs turns 1 I am going to get my bellybutton redone? Or something along those lines so you know you will get it again?!?

I had laporoscopic (sorry, can't spell) surgery years and years and years ago and my belly button never recovered. It goes particularly weird through pregnancy.
Sorry to hear about your belly button bar - maybe it will be a neat 'post pregnancy' present when you are all recovered?

Lena, yes I went from metal to plastic. Mum thinks I was basically allergic to the stuff the bar was made out of. I've got my ears pierced too, and I've worn plastic earrings without problems!

I hope to get it done again, but as we want another couple of kids I might just wait until we're finished!

I took my belly button piercing out about a month ago and have been putting it back in every couple of days to keep the hole open. Im hoping I can just put it back in after. I've already had mine done twice and i dont want to have to do it again.

Well, I guess I have another thing to be thankful for, my body seems to be doing fine with the pregnancy one - the skin got a little bit red at one stage but never sore or visibly infected, and also seems to have settled. I can understand about how gutted you would be with having to take it out !

I miss all my piercings. But one good thing about this pregnancy is that has conveniently made my belly scar disappear like magic. Shame the same thing hasn't happened with the scar on my nipple from that piercing.
The worst problem I had was with my nose piercing!!! Mental I know but it would just randomly bleed, my doctor said I was having problems because everything softens up
So that just leaves me with my tongue piercing really since I haven't worn earrings for years.

That *is* a bit random Toni, you poor thing ! My nose piercing has been fine, haven't taken it out for years - hasn't discolored or anything even (never falls out), but that's cos it's 22kt gold and reeeeeeeeal tiny. My nipple ring hasn't left a really visible mark, but if I roll / squeeze it I can see that it's not totally healed over yet.

Edited to add: There was also something that my antenatal class tutor said during our hospital tour that personally struck me as odd, in that she advised us to take any piercings out for labour even if we weren't going to have a c-section... and I'm not too sure why !? I mean, I get it in the event of winding up with a caesar, but otherwise, I'm leaving mine in !

Yeah I thought it was really random for my nose piercing to cause the most trouble. I had it for 9 years so I was abit gutted having to take it out
Um the only thing I could think of with piercings in labour is that it could put a strain on a belly piercing going through labour and a nipple piercing could get in the way of successfully breastfeeding when your still new to it..... But thats just a guess.

I can understand the breastfeeding thing, but she mentioned tongue and bellybutton in particular !? Ah well. If it happens, it happens, otherwise I'm not worried.

maybe it's because during labour you tend to go with whatever feels like it will help the pain with regards to positions etc, and they've had a few accidents with bellybuttons getting ripped?
with the tongue i have no idea really....?
