Hi ladies

Just a quick poll.... at a wedding, for the partying part, do you prefer a band or a DJ quietly playing records in the corner? Or something else again.

It's all personal I know but I'm just trying to arrange something for our wedding in Nov and really want most people to be up and dancing and enjoying themselves.

TIA!

We never left our reception early in fact we were the last to leave. I didn't want to leave early and miss all of the fun.

I had a dj at my first wedding and it was great. They tracked down a few nostalgic hard to find songs that I wanted and brought a bubble machine along which shot bubbles out above the dance floor.
I'd def go with a dj over a band as they're so versatile and you can give them lists of music and kinda pre-program. The other way I'd do it which my cousin did is use a laptop plugged into the stereo system and have pre-programmed playlists on there. Just have someone watching it.
Good luck

We had a DJ at ours and it worked out really well - he set up the song for me to walk down the aisle to, and my nephew pressed play, and the DJ joined us before dinner and played soft music while we were eating, and then better dancing music afterwards. In hindsight, we didn't really need him as very few people got up and danced, but oh well, it worked out well!! We supplied him with a CD of the songs we wanted for the processional, first dance etc. and he used them.

Live bands all the way!

I personally perfer live bands. Nothing beats looking at a live band when your dancing IMO.

We had a DJ and he was totally awesome, he really knew what we wanted and how to get every dancing all night!

Recently we went to a friends wedding and they had a duke box choose your own sort of thing, even tho she had playlists people played with them and didnt know how to work the machine. It meant NO ONE danced!

Haha, we are being budget at our wedding and having a laptop connected to speakers. Figure that way I can choose what music is played plus so much cheaper. A friend is in charge of it. I guess it means we won't have flashing lights or any of that stuff but can't say I care.

Two weddings I have been to in recent times have had DJS who sucked and played crap music and didn't do requests despite the fact that it was not like they were playing in a crowded night club or anything, so if going with DJ I would def check they do requests and don't play cheesy songs like Run Around Sue and Rock the Boat (sorry to anyone who likes these, they just remind me of nighclubbing when I was 18 back in 1994 and the songs were cheesy then)

For our wedding we had a band playing before and during dinner (DH is a musician so had heaps of contacts) and for Dancing we just played our own CD's through the bands sound system (not that anybody got into too much)

The band was great for creating atmosphere. If I were to do it again I would love to have had a band for the dancing (although it would be short a keys player :P) I have been to lots of weddings with bands and they have been a lot of fun.

They generally have their own set list but if there were particular songs you wanted I'm sure they could learn them for you (with the right band).

We had a DJ for our wedding and most of our friends have too and they were all great. Two friends had bands which were also cool, though I remember the 1st one the band went for what seemed like a massive break so we were only listening to a playlist for a big chunk of time anyway so that put me off a bit. But I found both DJ's and bands both had people on the floor all the time. I've been to a few parties and a wedding with a juke box and it never works the same. The music doesn't seem to flow and the guests stuff it up selecting stupid stuff and then realising they don't want to dance to it after all (including me). Definitely worth making sure the DJ/band will play the type of music you and your friends are going to enjoy.

We had a DJ for our wedding and we were one of the last sets of couples to leave! Our guests even paid him to stay on longer!

He was fantastic and the dance floor was full all night. We made no song lists, our expectations were that he is the DJ, its his job to provide good music and I expected him to keep the crowd entertained....and that he did! I said at our first meeting if the dance floor is empty your not doing your job!

Thankfully he rocked the party!!

I'm thinking about this at the moment also, and since my brothers in a band and for the 21sts and stuff they have just hooked up a laptop to the speakers and sound system they have. Could also ask my brother to dj since he has all the decks etc.

I am thinking of just downloading a whole heap of music onto our ipods as dp and I both have quite eclectic tastes and he works in a bar/restaurant in town where he plugs his ipod into the system as they get sick of the house system and all the staff enjoy it. They want him to write a list for the guys to download onto the system

Mybe thats an option

We had a DJ too and he was great. He had played at my sisters wedding so we already knew what he was like. He downloaded heaps of songs that we wanted and also did the music at the church which meant that all the guests could just enjoy the day. The thing I liked with a DJ was that he could read the crowd really well and be flexible with the type of music he was playing depending on the reaction it got. I had thought about a band, but they don't really have that sort of flexibility. It meant that there were people up all night and was great to sit back and watch all the oldies and our mates enjoying themselves having a boogie.
