Hey Girls,

Was wondering where the best places are to get the things you need to ice / make novelty birthday cakes? I am going into New Plymouth tomorrow morning and then attempt to make Arna's 2nd birthday cake.
I have never EVER made a cake like this, I've baked many a cakes but never iced them and decorated them...

Janine - I see you are the guru in making cakes... any pointers?!

Thanks Ladies

I'm not Janine, however Spotlight is great for cake supplies - they have a store in Gill St in New Plymouth.
Also, the Australian Women's Weekly has a great cake decorating book - Kid's Cakes - they are easy to follow and use things that you can find in NZ.

Ok well your best bet is to go to Strandon bakery they have everything you need you can hire the cakes this for like $5 plus bond they have everything fron thomas to pooh bear it is really cool the lady in threre will be very helpful and tell you waht you need as far as icing goes. No affence to spotlight but the one here in NP is real crappy and they are not very helpful. by the way Strandon babkery is jsut up by toy world it is a bit hard to find so look them up in the book and ask for their address.

Must be a spotlight thing - the stock here in Auckland is pretty good but the service is crummy beyond crumminess.

Just wanted to say that I agree about spotlight not being helpful, I live in Wgtn! Sounds like they need to brush up on their service skills!!

I brought that Kids cakes book though treasure's mag and its so neat. Rach and i are going to attempt to make one for Brianna's 2nd b'day. Don't think there are very many place's in Rotorua or Taupo to find decorating tools or other things we may need, so i think spot is the best bet for us.

Spotlight has some stuff, usually it has a bit more than some cake shops depending where you are. some cake shops hire out shaped cake tins so it saves you the hassle of having to cut the cake to the shape.

Hey - I'm gonna post a new post - It has all the pointers and techniques that i use for cakes - so might be helpful for you all.
