I'm going on maternity leave at the start of July, returning to work at the start of December.
Our branch has just got permission to hire a new staff member for our local office, and I want to apply. When I started this job, it was on the understanding that I would work here for a couple of years and then move up to the next position, as I was originally intended to be the person who moved up through the ranks. Things changed a little and the position I was supposed to move into came available a year earlier than intended, and I didn't have the knowledge or experience required to take it on at that time. This new position is a step down from that one, but a step up from where I am now - and it's highly unlikely that this position or the next higher one will come up again at any time soon.
Would you apply, or just accept that the timing sucks and it's kind of an omen that it isn't for you....

apply for it that way they know you are interested and keen to come back - they probably wont give it to you - but wont say its because of the pregnancy

I would apply for it, what have you got to lose? They already know your situation and that may mean they don't give you the job but as crakars said they will know that you are keen to return. Good luck!

You have nothing to lose by applying for it. Applying for it may even convince them that you do intend to come back after not too long. Maternity leave does feel like a bother but they will have to have someone cover you for that time regardless of your role, so just go for it anyway.

As the others have said apply for it that way they know you are interested in further advancement.

They've always known I'm interested in further advancement - I took this position on the basis I could advance, as I'm not about doing a boring mundane job for years on end - I just can't do it, personally. And T - no they aren't getting anyone to cover for me while I'm away
Ok, I'll apply...what have I got to lose!!!

Definitely apply for it. Also make it clear that you will be returning in December (not that it should make a difference but it does). When I was preg with Michaela I went for a new job (within the same company) and got it over some people who had been here longer and who weren't going on 'extended' leave.

Agree with what everyone else said. I reckon a lot of employers are wary of whether or not staff will come back from maternity leave, so it is a good indication to them for sure. Good luck!

Yip apply, go in there with your I's dotted & T x'd. Go that little extra. Give them no reason not to give you the job. We all know that you might not get it because of being preggy, & that you will never know for sure. If it comes up say that you have child care all arrange for your return. Good luck.

Having heard further about it, it's VERY unlikely I'll get it - they want someone to start in July, which I definitely can't, but at least they will know my intentions are good.
