I was just reading our kindy newsletter and apparently there's been a reported case of head lice at kindy. I've just checked Michaela and I couldn't find any but what can I do to make sure she doesn't get infested? I have a herbal shampoo with tea tree oil which I'll start using on her and she always has her hair tied up before kindy. I'll also check her hair every kindy day. Anything else? -------------

There are a couple of products on the market that are meant to repel them but basically its just the tea tree oil in them so I'd just use the shampoo that you have.
Speaking from experience (the joys of working in daycare) Ive done all I can and still ended up with them  If she does get them dont waste your $$ on stuff from the chemist, use condtioner or aqueous cream, coat her hair then comb it with a fine tooth comb, it some how disolves the glue that makes them stick to your hair.------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

Unfortunately it seems they're a fact of life. Maya has had them numerous times over the past two years and I've resorted to combing her hair with the nit comb every Sunday night and then treating her if necessary coz they are so rife at school. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

As preventative measures, tea tree oil drops directly into your normal, every day shampoo. Don't shell out extra money buying shampoo with tea tree oil already in it. If you add it to the shampoo yourself, you're making it more concentrated so it works better. Just make sure it doesn't go into Michaela's eyes or it will sting! Blow dry her hair if she will let you, too. The heat can kill the living lice.
Every daycare day, put her hair up in a plait, then sprayed with hairspray. If she does end up getting them, it pays to read up on their life cycle and work at breaking that cycle. For example, only adult lice can lay eggs so if you kill them while they're still nymphs (7-10 days after hatching) but before they're adults, then that all helps to break the cycle because they haven't had a chance to lay more eggs. Ashlee has had them and the only way we could get rid of the bugs and eggs was to comb, comb, comb about 3 times a week in the beginning! It's definitely gross and takes a while to not be squirmy to the whole process, but it's all just a normal part of daycare/school!!! |

Thanks for the tips everyone. DH is totally against using product in Ms hair but I'm afraid he'll just have to get used to in (on kindy days anyway). OT happy due date eve Kirsten - I can't believe how quickly 9 months has gone! -------------

i believe that they like clean hair so prehaps don't wah it as often. Also the strys of being told that you need to wash evrything just aren't true they don't survive off our hair. ------------- http://daisypath.com">

My aunt swears by a spray bottle of water and tea tree that she just sprays on kids before they head to school... not sure if the lice dont like the tea tree or if the other kids avoid them because of the smell, but it works :) 5 years + without a case yet!  ------------- http://lilypie.com" rel="nofollow">  |
