Hi girls,
Is it bad to eat peanuts/almonds/cashews etc. I have been eating them from time to time and wondered whether it was bad/good for baby? Any advice?

Ive always eaten them becuase of the whole protien thing and nothing has happened to my babies, touch wood. I have heard they can have reactions to them but i think thats more common if you are prone to allergies.

I've also heard that it's only if you have a history of allergies or it runs in the family that you need to be careful, and of course I second the moderation thing, you'd probably get sick of them after a little while at least... I'm still eating them every now and then though.

I eat all of them....I did with Paige too.
Some say if you eat them whilst pregnant it can set off allergies later in life....Who knows?
The health gurus say one thing one year then another thing the next!!
My theory too...everything in moderation!

My Mum was told by her Dr she should eat heaps of peanuts when she was pregnant with me (I cant remeber the reason), and I have had asthma and allergies my whole life. It might have nothing to do with why I have asthma etc, but researchers have apparently found a link between eating peanuts, and your baby having allergies. But my baby might be more likely to have allergies since I do,...who knows! (But Im not eating anything with peanuts, I hardly do anyway!)
Like others have said, the health Gurus always find something that u should not have, we wouldnt eat anything if we believed every thing they said!
I agree with moderation!

hmmm well Ihave allergies and asthma and I have been eating peanuts quite often, I dont much like meat so I need to get extra protein somewhere...my personal view is that if you are going to get those things you are going to get them, regardless of what mum eats during pregnancy, but I could be wrong. I dont think it is something you can really quantify, but if you want to be ultre safe maybe avoid them? WHo knows...?

I've only heard that peanuts can be trouble if you happen to ba carrying a child with a severe peanut allergy!! That said, I haven't avoided them and nuts are just good for you... especially almonds (which I've made a point of eating every now and then).

Mmmmm. I've been having peanut butter and banana on muffin split for breakfast for the past few days. I figure it's a good protein source and the list of foods I'm not supposed to eat is big enough. (18 weeks to sushi...)

Peanuts are onlya risk if you have a strong family history of allergies, or have already had a child with allergies. I am a peanut-free zone this pregnancy because Maya was allergic to dairy, egg, soy and peanut.
That said, there is no evidence that foods actually cross the placental barrier in a form which may cause allergies in an infant later on. It is far more important to avoid 'risk' foods (in my case dairy, egg and peanut) when breastfeeding, as teh allergens are passed thru breastmilk. Learnt this the hard way when Maya got very sick - she was getting traces of dairy thru my breastmilk.

The only thing I probably haven't eaten *at all* throughout this pregnancy is sushi, but can't say I've missed it too terribly much... now that you ladies have mentioned it though, I think I'll have to commission hubby to get some salmon and avocado sushi rolls especially for after the birth !

I'm not supposed to eat peanuts as my hubby is allergic to them and all nuts actually. My midwife told me there were teo theories on it, one saying that you shouldn't eat them if there is a family history of allergy and another view saying that if baby has never been in contact with a substance then how can they build up and anti bodies to it? My mil thinks it has something to do with the ezema (spelling?!) cream they had when they were babies, apparently it had nut oil which they think has caused a lot of the nut allergies and I have heard that a few times from other sources too. I still eat the cashews and other nuts, but not really peanuts. I kinda think if you took every sinlge thing on board then you would spend 9 months in a bubble and put bubs into a bubble as soon as it was born! Of course this all could change next week when they find new things you can and can't do!
