Can I eat the roast chicken subways while pregnant?
I'm guessing no since the chicken is already cooked and cold and then they reheat it - or is that ok?

I did, but always made sure they did them fresh rather than toasted. You can ask them to heat them for a bit longer too (or to microwave the chicken and toast it too)

I had the chicken fillets heaps during the first few weeks of being pregnant as I craved the veges.
I often hear people getting sick from BK and KFC etc, but have never heard anyone getting sick from Subway.
And to be honest, I would be more worried about cross contamination from handling ham etc....and not so much being sick from uncooked chicken.

ummm... do a search on here! This has come up a few times before and I've said I got the worst food poisoning of my life from subway (along with 2 of my bridesmaids, 3 days before my wedding) and I'm not the only one.
But yeah, i'd be more concerned with all the cross contamination between meats/salads that goes on than by the chicken itself if the chicken is well cooked.

Personally, I definitely wouldn't eat Subway while pregnant. Everything sits out, the same gloves are used to serve all the food, and there is a worry about pre-washed salad too.
However, I do hear of other's eating subway so it is completely a personal decision! My MW advised against it.

Im a lot more relaxed with this pregnancy , there are things I wont eat (eg sushi etc ) but I indulge every now and then in subway etc.
In both pregnancies both my mws have been pretty lax, so never worried about me eating subway

Good point about the cross contamination guys, I hadn't even thought of that. Maybe I'll try and stay away then unless I get desperate!

I didnt have any Subway at the beginning cos I was concerned about the whole pre-prepared salads, I didnt even think about the meats lol!!!
But since about week 15 or so Ive had the odd craving for subway so have had it and all has been fine so far. The chicken that is.

I wouldn't risk it but thats my own personal preference, why don't you make a subway type sandwich at home, just buy a french stick. The only thing I am really missing is the sushi, but I am not risking the bacteria just for a piece of sushi!

I've had food poisoning from subway twice, and I usually have a cast iron stomach, so I wouldn't risk it.

Just a note on sushi, bacteria doesn't start to grow on rice until minimum 4 hours once it's been cooked (you can research this online), and even that's at optimal bacteria growing conditions e.g. warm weather/room temperature. If you get your sushi early in the day then it's completely safe (make you own choice on what fillings you feel comfortable with, I go for tuna and avocado).
Ask yourself too, when is the last time you've seen a grotty sushi joint, I think they're probably the cleanest takeaway places around.
I don't expect to convince anyone as sushi is seen as bad, but honestly freshly made sushi is probably one of the best things you can eat!

I've had Subway quite a few times - including chicken - but have made sure it's been toasted and that they have changed their gloves between handling the meat and the salads - got a few nasty responses for asking for it, but I figure it's a pretty standard food handling quality standard thingymajig so just insist on it. I had Subway at the Hamilton V8s each day as well, because it was the only slightly healthy thing other than having hot chips/hamburgers etc but they had one person for each section - so one person for chicken, one for bacon, one for meat, one for lettuce, one for tomatoes etc etc. You weren't allowed to bring your own food in, so it came down to the best choice available.

Interesting info on the Sushi, Febgirl. I still eat Sushi but usually buy it first thing in the morning and get the tuna one also. It is only on odd occasions so I am comfortable with that.

Interesting topic. I find alot of it is personal choice.
I have to agree with you Febgirl. I buy sushi from a lovely Japanese shop near work, they have such a high turn over and it is made fresh when I ask....no bother to them at all.
I haven't had Subway yet, I have been weary of the salads not the meat lol. They have such a high turn over too.....maybe I will bite the bullet one day.

something I just remembered , anyone that is a fan of the chicken fillet , eg the chicken itself, tegal chicken steaks (pretty sure thats the one ) taste identical ...so if your wanting the taste but are worried about the risk , you could perhaps make one up in a roll

Febgirl-
I have been thinking the same thing about sushi. there is a place near where I work that is really clean and I have bought sushi (pre-preg) from there when they first opened in the morning and it was as fresh as if I had made it myself. (and better- my sushi making skills are average at best).
I am considering getting it (vege and/or tuna) and putting it in the fridge as soon as I get to work..
My DH had KFC a few weeks back and we were BOTH grossed out by it. The chicken looked revolting, and a little pink-ish, the roll was stale and the potato and gravy looked like.... the stuff that makes babies mixed with baby poo....
DH usually eats anything but for him to throw it out, it must have been bad.

eww that is totally putting me off KFC
The other thing about sushi is if it is made correctly with the Japanese rice wine vinegar it doesn't grow bacteria at all as the acidity inhibits the growth. That's why sushi doesn't have to be refridgerated. It would be pretty hard to tell from the sushi itself but if the sushi makers are Japanese there's a good chance it has been prepared correctly.
Having said that I just make my own if I want some.
