Hi all

I take 40mg a day of Fluoxatine which is an anti-depressant. It's the safest one to take during pregnancy.

But my question is this. Coud it be them that is making my MS so bad?
The reason I ask is, I forgot to take them for 2 days, along with my vitamins and folic acid (whoops), and this morning I felt wonderul. Haven't vomitted for the first time in 3 weeks or even felt ill. But I remembered I had forgotten my meds and I've taken them today and now feel nauseous.

Funnily enough, I usually get dizzy and horrible withdrawls if I even forget to take them for just one day, but I had nothing this time.
Do I try not taking them and see if I come right? I have a feeling being PG is giving me enough of a high to balance out my depression.

A little bit lost as I don't want to come off them and fall into a bad depression, but also don't want to feel ill for my whole pregancy.

Sorry for novel. Any suggestions would help. Thanks

i stopped taking my meds when i got pg and was fine but the high may not last and it may not be worth risking it. if you ring a pharmacy they may be able to tell you and if it is them that is making you sick think about cutting them down maybe but i would talk to someone first just in case its a fluke and you end up going off them unnecessarily.

I dont know about the meds- but multi vits made my ms Heeeeaps worse.

PLUS- Im afraid some of us just end up with a bad deal when it comes to ms. It SUX. Esp so early on, you feel like its never gonna end..... but it does ease off eventually. Not much help I know- sorry.

I completely sympathise babe.

Could be the multi vits but I know I have to keep taking them as well as my folic acid as they are for baby. The Fluox is the only one for me.

Meanwhile i think I will halve my dose, just take 20mg instead. Will see if that helps. I'll also try taking them midday or evening instead of in the morning.

I've heard a lot of people who say taking vitamins can make them feel sick, so maybe it's that?

If you decide to trial not taking the ADs, it would be best to meet with your doc and then gradually decrease the dose..... good to have the support and guidance of a dr when it comes to these things (I'm on citalopram).

Could you maybe try taking them in the evening before you try reducing the dose? That way if they are making you feel cruddy at least you can hopefully sleep through most of it.

Funnily enough when I was pregnant with DD I was taking Elevit and it used to make me feel so sick! I resorted to taking it at night when I went to bed, so I could be asleep when the sickly feeling would kick in!

Although in saying that I would wake up at 11pm every single night and start vomiting until I reached 12 weeks. Then all my morning sickness just disappeared!

hmmm I am taking the multivitamin at night, my reason is that I still have one coffee in the morning so don't want to take it then since caffeine reduces the affect. So instead I take at night...perhaps this is why I haven't been feeling sick til night time!

It was suggested to me to stop taking the folic acid when I was having early MS problems.

I had a good chat to my Dr when I found out I was PG as I'm taking citilopram, so maybe it's worth having a chat to yours - especially if you are looking to alter doses etc. I spoke to my GP again recently about coming off them, but as he said in my case that a happy mum is probably more important - especially seeing how far along I was

Unfortunately as KitKat said, some of us do get a bit of a raw deal when it comes to MS.
Hopefully it will clear up for you soon

I'd say it would be more likely to be the pregnancy multivitamins than the Anti-depressants.

I definitely wouldn't mess with the Anti-D's without consulting your prescribing doctor. Pregnancy makes your hormones go nutso anyway. I found last time that my first trimester was great but I turned into a psycho hose beast for most of the second 3 months

It could be the multi vitamins. I know folic acid is meant to be important for the baby but it could also be affecting you. My mw told me vitamins weren't necessary if you have a good diet. I thought my iron level would be low, especially now as I'm in third trimester and I generally don't eat red meat but its great. We told this to mw and she just said well it shows that you don't necessarily have to eat red meat. I also have a high bmi which mw was worried about the gd but yet again glucose levels are low if anything. So it can all be managed on diet.

I also second speaking to your dr about coming of antid or lowering the dosage as they know you and your condition and are likely to be able to recommend something. I have gone through this situation with my bro (no of course he wasn't pregnant) but his dr lowered his prescription when others were trying to push more meds on him cos he could see through all the excessiveness my bro was doing to get attention and realised that was just his nature and not his condition

Hmmm, want to avoid my doctor like the plague actually as he is an idiot.
I told him I was depressed and he asked me what anti-d's I wanted to take and what dosage did I think I should go on. He just signed the prescription, I pretty much prescribed them for myself.

He did say when I was trying to get preg that I should stop taking my anti-d's cause he is of the opinion that nothing foreign should go into your body when pregnant.

He's not a very good doctor, in fact I usually go back to hamilton if I have any big problems and only go to this guy if it's something basic or small.

I'll ride it out. Been feeling ok the last few days. I'm not too far off 12 weeks.

Just an update. Decided to stop taking my multi vitamin instead and guess what. I feel great! Only 2 little gags today, nothing else. I can eat, I don't feel sick, just feeling good.

Here's hoping it stays that way!

Isn't it weird the diff things you are told?

The chemist people told me that Elevit is "proven" to reduce morning sickness. (i am not sure I believe that)

I haven't got anything to compare to and I think my MS was pretty mild but I have a friend who didn't take elevit and was very sick.

I think it is so variable from person to person, you have to do what works for you.
