I used to get cold sores pretty badly (that'll teach me for not washing my hands after touching a shopping trolley). I stopped getting them when I fell preggers and haven't had one since (Yipee!!).
Anyway, I kiss Madelyn alot and play a kissing game where I see how many kisses it takes on her face and hands to make her laugh. I've just looked in the mirror and I have a cold sore coming up gggrrrrr. I know she can contract the virus in utero but could I have given her cold sores by kissing her mouth over the last day or two? I'm washing my hands frantically and not kissing her now that I know I have one but i'll be livid if I've given it to her. Madelyn probably has received some of your antibodies against the coldsore virus, so she might have some protection against catching it, but yes, she can definitely catch the virus from you at her age. I hate to say this also, but you can actually transmit the virus at any time (not just when you have a coldsore - infact that is when the majority of transmission happens). Obviously you don't want to not kiss your daughter, but if it were me, I would keep some distance when you do have a coldsore.
Another point is that she may catch the virus from you, but never actually have a coldsore - I know both my parents had really bad coldsores from time to time, yet my sister and I have never had one (although we are both likely infected with the coldsore virus). So don't stress too much (especially as that's a major cause of reactivating a coldsore!) Sorry for the ramble, but my PhD thesis was on herpes simplex virus (aka coldsore virus), so it's my little pocket of knowledge!  -------------

I don't know nearly as much as Blondy  but my mum gets cold sores and she used to just not kiss me from when she knew one was coming up til it disappeared. I don't know if I have the virus but I've never had a cold sore. Just be abit more careful when you have one I think, theres not too much else you can do.-------------

I get coldsores, although not for a while thankfully! I don't kiss my kids on the lips at any time, or at all when I have a coldsore. The virus can transfer at any time though  -------------  |

Thanks Guys. I guess I was hoping to spare her the curse of herpes lol.
I've done some research and it seems that if she does come up with it, it's often inflammation of the gums etc rather than a sore for the first out break. No signs of anything as yet so just keeping a close eye. Being careful with hygiene and not kissing her which is SO SO hard. She's just so kissable!!!!!!! | You can also get these patches now - it has slipped my mind the name of them though sorry - but you put them over the coldsore and it is apparently better for stopping them spreading. Would only be good for when you have one - not for when one is on the way though. |

Compeed patches Haven't tried them though
My mum has them and I have them. No sign that Jack has them yet. DH has the virus and has had a couple of coldsores, but that's it. Whereas I get them every season change and at the sign of stress. I don't kiss Jack when I have one and never kiss him on the mouth just to be sure |

No signs of any probs as yet with her. Feels so weird not kissing her though. Think i'll have to stay away from her mouth permanently just to reduce the changes in case one is coming up and I don't know.

Yes, thats what they are called. Forgot yesterday! I tried them when I last had a coldsore at Christmas time and overall I thought they were good - not perfect! Next time I get a big one I would definitely use them again as they made it a lot less sore and I think it stopped it spreading as much. In terms of hiding it I don't think it really did that. My two year old said "Mummy got plaster on lip" so it can't have been that discreet! But it definitely made it not so ugly and crusty looking. You can tell you have something stuck on your lip though which is a bit weird! They really do stop it being sore though which I loved. Plus I loved knowing it was less likely to spread to the kids. I hate having them so it would be good to be able to avoid passing them on.
