Hi all,

I'm currently 13 weeks preggies, and I'm only just looking around for a midwife - my question is, has anyone else been in the same position, waiting a few weeks before getting a midwife? My doctor recommended I dont need one until after 12 weeks, and I was fine with that because she has never lead me astrray, but I'm a little embaressed telling friends because they think that is really strange.

I'm healthy and happy and have just had a scan, so whats the problem?

MW's in alot of areas book up super fast. My MW I had with Daniel only had one spot left for june and I was only 5 weeks preggers when I rang her. Some areas have big shortages of MWs so it pays to get in early to ensure you get one that you like.

I didn't get one til I was 12 weeks, but it pays to get in fast as the good ones tend to go quickly, I always found going to my MW worth it (even when i couldn't be bothered after work) as you get to hear the heartbeat each time, always put a smile on my dial

I'm the same, and with both pregnancies waited until 11 weeks before finding a midwife.    I don't know how much of it has to do with luck but I didn't have any trouble.   But they do tend to book up fast.

I only called one midwife this time and she had one spot left for the end of November so I was happy with that.

I am pretty easy going so I was happy to get whoever.   Turns out she was a GP for 15 years and has been a midwife for 9 years so I'm confident in her experience, and looking on her photo wall I saw my cousins two children and she raved about her so I'm happy.

Whereabouts do you live?

Depends where you are in NZ but generally MW's book up extremely quickly.

Congratulations with your pregnancy though!

Edit: Because post sounded a bit condescending which it wasn't meant to.

Like others said, they book up quick. I don't officially have one until this week (at 30 weeks). Up till now I have used my GP and have found her wondeful. But it would be nice to get to know the person that will deliver your baby, earlier rather than later

Emmi - do a search of the forums, I am sure I have seen a thread with recommendations for Wlg mws

margipargi - as others have said I would get a mw ASAP as they tend to book up fast.

Plus don't you need to be registered with an LMC by 16wks??

I wasn't planning on looking into a midwife until around 9 - 12 weeks but after reading on here that I should probably get onto it I did - tonight.

When the mw called me back, I told her I was worried I was calling too early she said no way - due to my due date (early Jan).

It may pay to start calling around now.

Apparently there are no available midwives in Wellington for Jan, and a couple of Hutt. So if anyone is looking for one in the Wellington area for Jan get on to it now. Or yesterday!
I am calling around everyone I can find tomorrow :( Wish me luck!

Hi, I too was going to wait till I was 12 weeks, purely because I've just moved to Pt Chevalier in Auckland. I was hoping that I might hear of good MW. I don't mean to piggy back on your initial question margipargi, but after reading the replies, I think it might be best to start looking now. Anyone got any recommendations? Ideally I would like to have someone who has a sense of humour. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot

Yip book as soon as possible. I think if you have friends or family that have used a mw before and get them as a recommendation then you get in a little bit easier.

I rang mine at maybe 8-9weeks but didn't see her until I was 14weeks as with work commitments and trying to find a time I could go etc.

For anyone searching go onto kiwifamilies.co.nz you can search for mws there. Also in Auck you can use hospital mw if you cant find any independent, just be ware that they may not show up to the birth you may end up with a different mw then you normally see and that they may not do the home visits after babys here either.  Remember you can keep calling round after and change mw at anytime.

Emmi, I'm 8 weeks and I had a hard time finding someone in Wgtn too. I don't have numbers to hand but you could give Michelle Vincent, (based in Ngaio) Sue Whitley (Harbour City Midwives, based in Newtown) or Megan Heatherington (Birth Options, based in Porirua) a try. Matpro should have numbers for all of them. If you don't manage to get anyone easily I would give the midwives at Wgtn Hospital a call. I had a couple of friends who delivered with them last year and said they were great. I'm not sure who the one based in J'ville would be - hopefully Margipargi can give you her name.

The other people I can think of (who delivered my first baby) are Domino midwives. They are based in Newtown as well, but they are a team of six so you may have some luck with them. They took me last year and I am in J'ville.

Good Luck! It's a nice feeling to have a MW all sorted.
