We've got our first FA appointment booked next month. Can anyone who's been there give me an idea of what to expect?

What I really want to know is how long things take. I'm apparently not ovulating, although I haven't got the bloods to confirm that yet (hopefully, if AF will get a move on, I'll have them before the appointment).

My guess is they'll do a scan to check for PCOS? How long does that usually happen after the first appointment? And then what - do you have to wait for your next cycle after that (which could be months for me) to go on Clomid (if that's what they recomend)?

Hey Hopes, great that you have your first FA appointment coming up. When I went to my first appt at FA in Ham, they did a scan for pcos there and then so just be prepared that they might want to do it at your appointment (the lovely dildo cam). And it depends on your bloods and tests etc what treatment the specialist recommends but if you think they will get you doing some clomid cycles don't worry just tell them that your cycles are really long and you would rather start straight away, because they can give you something to kickstart your af.

Anyway goodluck and Im sure you'll have that BFP before too long

Ooohh... great... the faster things happen the better, as far as I'm concerned. Although that kind of thing of good to know in advance! Thanks for the heads up

Yes, I don't really know what they'll do... my Dr talked as if IVF was going to be the main option, but surely if the problem is that I'm not ovulating (which I don't appear to be) Clomid would be an obvious first step? Anyway, there's no use trying to guess, I suppose - that's their job.

Hi Hopes!

At our first appt we just discussed health history and the like. Gave the DR a run down on how long we had been trying, my cycles etc.

He did any ultrsound (Just a normal tummy one) to check my ovaries. I had heard a lot of woman had internals on the first appt so I was 'prepared' for that but didn't need one as I had just recently had my annual check up wiith my GP and just gave the Dr a copy of results.
Dr gave me a Medlab form to get tests done once AF arrived (sounds like what you are waiting for).

All up it took about 20 minutes!

Second appointment we discussed test results briefly and a plan of action - He doesn't muck around & had done a lot of research for us before our appointment - Which I like!

Now we don't see him again until we are coming up to our treatment so around 18 months away - If you are going privately or something I'm sure it would start fairly soon?
Sorry I can't help with timing on other stuff.

GOOD LUCK!

they are pretty quick with getting started on things - usually will start the clomid - low dose just to see how you go - they can also give you something that will start your AF - then its lots of blood tests et. We went to FA in October 2007 - BFP May 08 - so we were very lucky - good luck - they know what they are doing

Hi everyone

This may sound like a dumb question but does it cost anything to be seen by a fertility specialist

Hi Oxy23,

For a direct appt with F.A Akl it costs $225 for the first consultation and $125 for every one after that.

I'm not sure if its any less going through a GP but I do know that wait is longer.

Good luck

Our first appointment in Hamilton is costing $165. I'm not sure what follow-ups are.
