The other thread was getting a bit long...
Got MRI preliminary results today - there was nothing major left, just a layer that is right next to the spinal cord, which is what they were expecting. They think they got 90 something percent of it. Now we need to talk to the oncologist and decide when to start chemo, which will happen here at Starship, not Wellington. If we get a wee break before chemo, we might get home for a bit which would be great.
She is doing really well from a surgical point of view, other than a few feeding issues (vomiting up her nasogastric feeds and no interest in taking bottle). Main thing now is lots of physio cos she is very floppy and needs to relearn how to hold her up, sit, possibly walk etc...
But all in all, going pretty well at the moment

Aimee, fantastic that they got most of it and that the surgery went as well as it could. I really hope you can have some great time together as a family before the chemo starts. Fingers crossed for an events-free trip home.

Have been following your journey and couldn't read and run. Just wanted to let you know about a National Travel Assistance Fund through the Ministry of Health where you can get help with travel and accommodation costs. Would be worth checking out if you don't already know about it. We recently used it but no-one told us about it.
All the best for Greer's recovery. You sound like a very strong mum - it can't be easy watching your baby go through these procedures.

Thanks everyone
Just wanted to mention how fantastic the National Travel Assistance Scheme is.... Daniel has gone home today to work so we actually have some money! But he gets a return flight per week paid for by this scheme, and all he has to do is ring up the co-ordinator and she books the flight he wants. Its great cos it means he can go back home and work 4 or 5 days, and then fly up here for the weekend. I would get very lonely otherwise The social workers have been great about getting it sorted for us.
And I have managed to find a positive in having to do chemo - we will get to stay on the brand new oncology ward that opened here less than 2 weeks ago. Apparently its very flash!

New update! Saw oncologist today. Plan is to start chemo in 3 weeks, up here at Starship. Treatment lasts about 18 months, all going well. Initially we will spend 3 days in Auckland every three weeks, and the in between weeks will be a day patient at Palmy Hospital. This is for the first 3 months, then our Auck visits spread out to 4 weekly for 3 months. Then for the next year, its up here every 6 weeks! Me and Greer and going to get very used to flying!!
She is still vomiting regularly with the naso-gastric feeding tube, which is the only thing still holding us here. Tomorrow they are going to put the tube down further beyond the stomach which should help. Then once she is having bottles and eating again we can go home!! Its been over 5 weeks already...
I am excited though, as I get to go and have a haircut tomorrow thanks to Child Cancer Foundation - need to get rid of those stress induced greys!

Wow, I didn't realise treatments went for so long. It must be a bit of a relief to have it all planned out and to know exactly what's happening though.
Fingers crossed the feeding issue can be sorted soon so you can all go home.

And I have to say, I love how positive you are about everything, it will surely make all the difference

Pepsi, I drive myself crazy if I get in the dumps about it all, so its just easier to stay positive! I said to someone the other day that I am waiting to have a big meltdown one day when I stop trying to stay positive all the time... But I think its what we all would do in this situation, self-preservation!

Aimee, I'm so glad things are going reasonably well for you guys! Greer is a ! And you are totally right about self-preservation - I often think back to Ashleigh's first few months in hospital and wonder how the hell I coped without falling apart. But you just get on with things and cope because...well, you kinda have to lol!! Good on you for staying strong and being such a good mum. I'm sure Greer wouldn't be doing half as well as she is if she didn't have such a great mum! Enjoy your haircut today
