so we've decided as we aren't going to aus or raro these xmas holidays, that we will go camping (that and we made a "tent" in the lounge that the kids wanted to sleep in)

So now what? I am pretty sure I read last year that the decent (read: cheap) campsites get booked out pretty well in advance so we are looking for recommendations. We are in palmy so thinking not too far away - and a camping site (on the lookout for a cheap family tent too, if you know anyone selling)

Any recommendations for a nice family friendly (possibly on the beach) camping grounds?

We go to Kennedy Park which has tent sites. Great facilities for the kids but not sure of the cost as we tend to stay in a villa.

Oh yes I second kennedy park, its great there. There is quite a bit to do around Napier as well.

Also Lake Ferry is great, but thats quite far I guess.

Depends what sort of camping you want! Probably a good idea to start easy and go to a motor camp type place with kitchens and powered sites.

I grew up in Palmy and we used to go to http://www.waitarerebeachcamps.co.nz/ - Waitarere Beach . On the same stretch of coast there's Foxton and http://www.himatangibeachholidaypark.co.nz/ - Himatangi . Or go the direction suggested by Linda, there's bound to be lots of camping grounds in Hawkes Bay.

If you're prepared to go the whole hog, cook on gas etc then it's really cheap to go somewhere like http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vinegar_Hill,_New_Zealand - Vinegar Hill which is a really pretty spot (although be warned, over Christmas/New Year the camp is 'camp' iygwim!).

Kmart quite often have really good specials on tents, I was going to buy one not long ago that was a 6 person for $100, didn't end up getting it though due to other bills but might be worth checking out

The last couple of years we have gone to a top 10 place in Taupo, was I think about 50 something a night for a powered site.

We bought a new tent for $600 but its a really big one that could if you packed them in like sardines sleep 15 (I think)

Kids had a great time and there is a pool and a big covered bouncy pillow and heaps of room for running around...the facilities are nice and clean and there is heaps to do close by.
