Hi
Just wondering how you all go about heating EBM. We take it from the fridge and put it in a container of hot water, however this takes a very long time to warm up by which time bubs is very hungry. Also bubs takes quite a while to drink it and dh seems to think the milk is too cold by the end. We thought about putting it back in hot water during burping. Just wondering what others do really. Also, when taking EBM out of the freezer do you leave it to defrost at room temp or in the fridge somewhere I read room temp and somewhere else it was fridge. If it's room temp, what do you do if you are not ready to use it for a while after it has thawed? |

I haven't had much experience with feeding EBM but I am also curious about the answers as Jody will need to be drinking EBM soon as I am doing a course. When we do occasionally bottle feed her I heat the milk in a bowl of water, usually changing the water a few times. She is pretty slow at drinking from the bottle too so I keep it in warm (not hot) water in between sips. I only used frozen a couple of times too, I just put it in the fridge about 12 or so hours in advance, then heated as usual. -------------

Hey. I used the hot bowl method and I found if you keep it in a bowl of warm water it will stay warm. And I think my midwife told me microwaving ruins the good things in it..Although warming up the milk is faster if you run hot water slowly over the bottle as well as having it half submerged in a bowl while swirling the milk..if you understand that. EBM lasts something like 3-5 days in the fridge. You could try taking your days milk out of freezer a day in advance? ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Apparently room temp is okay for up to 3-4 hours, quite a relief!
I warm up bottles in coffee cups half-full of boiling hot water. I get that organised as soon as baby starts waking. Then I get her up and change her nappy, by which time the bottle is warm enough. As far as cooling off goes, I wouldn't worry about that. It's not a la naturale but bubsies don't seem to mind. PS When you get the boiling water going, go ahead and make a cuppa too! -------------  |

You can defrost at either room temp or in the fridge, so if you're not going to use it soonish the fridge is probably best. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

| Yup we warm it in hot water as soon as Jack starts waking up same as busy mum! and defrost in the fridge the day before, or by sitting th frozen milk in warmish water |

When you freeze it you can freeze it in icecubes - ours used to make up to 10 mls per cube, which defrosted really quickly we could just get the number of cubes we needed out to make up to however many mls needed, and would pop them thru the bottle and it defrosted nicely in a jug of near boiling water if were using it on the spot, or if we knew we'd need it for later then we'd pop it in the fridge to defrost.
When getting it out in advance, pop it in a bowl of cold water in the fridge and it will help it defrost a little quicker, just change the water regularly to stop it from freezing to the container. Once it's been taken out of the freezer if must be used within 24 hours. ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja
