I have a niece who is 18 months old and still not walking - and I wondered if that was normal?
Then I started to wonder what the normal development pattern was and realised I have no clue - how old do babies sit up, crawl, talk and walk? | my neice isnt walking yet either at 18 months although she was 8 weeks prem so should only be 16 months and she seems to be up with milestones at that age. In saying that kobe was 6 weeks prem and was walking at 13 months which would have been just under 12 months if he had of gone to term so who knows. I dont think 18 months is to slow for walking, I dont think I would worry for another couple of months but Im not sure what the "normal" for all that is sorry |

I'm sure if there is no obvious disability then it's just a matter of time for your niece!
My neighbours child has only just started walking at 19 months but he is a smart, happy, playful boy! Nothing wrong there... just had better things to do than walk

My friends' baby walked at around 20 months. Ella walked at 13.5 months. They are two weeks apart.. as everyone has said, they all do things in their own time, but you still worry lol.. check out the milestones link Nikki posted  ------------- http://lilypie.com">

Yep they do all do things at their own time. my boys were 9 weeks early and walking at 14mths yet I know of babies more prem and walking earlier and i know of full term bubs that walk heaps later. But if you ever have worries aks plunket or you doctor. Oh and the prem bub walking early was 12 weeks prem and from about dec/jan was fully toilet trained day and night and she did on her own. Decided she was ready for knickers. Shes not quite a month older that the boys. She even tt sooner that her brother whose a year older (he was a premmie 2, 26 weeks) Im so jealous!! lol

Arna started walking at 9 1/2 months, and friends babies from ante natal walked between 11 - 20 months.
With everything children do it all depends on their personality - Solids - some at 4 months some at 6 - 7, Crawling - some bum shuffle, commando crawl, all fours, walk on knees etc. Toilet Training - anywhere between 20 months - 3 1/2 years So from that you can see there is a wide range of times that your baby can do things. PAFT (parents as first teachers) are awesome if you qualify, Plunket let you know roundabout times to encourage your children to do things. My girlfriend's son and Jake did everything pretty much the same apart from Jake getting teeth earlier, however, her girlfriend was saying that THeir baby crawled at two months and walked at five. To me, this is pretty much rubbish. People get very competetive.
Later I plan to tell people that Jake was reading Shakespeare in the womb. But I must admit reading that What to expect in the first year and if Jake was ahead in the milestones I would feel like "yah, I'm the winner". With Taine I'm a lot more low key. In fact no idea what he SHOULD eb doing at four months. He just goes with the flow. |

Yip I am quite happy to go with the flow to Liz. Xanda can sit by himself and has a tooth, but shows no sign of wanting to crawl, but I am happy as he is a healthy and very happy baby.
My cousins son is 2.5yrs and can't talk, so is being tested at the moment because they think he may have autism, which I think is very possible after observing his behaviour. ------------- http://www.bump-and-beyond.com/">

I am not too worried at the moment regarding Zaara's development....She is 7 months old, has no teeth, does not roll over or crawl (I think its more a lazy thing) but sits on her own and acts as if she is 2 years old....even tells me off at days!! LOL 
My brother walked and ran at 8 months. Was riding his tricycle on his first birthday and had his first tooth at 4-5 months. I walked at 10 months and had no teeth till I was 14 months old and then all of them came out at once!!! The average age for walking is 13 months but that means half will walk before that and half after. I walked really late at about 18-20 months i think and theres nothing wrong with me (well not much lol) ------------- http://lilypie.com">

i was worried for a while about jack as he didn't crawl until a few days after his first birthday and he didn't start walking by himself until he was 19mths. he'd happily hold your finger and walk at 18mths but wasn't confident to go it alone.
jack had dislocated hips at birth and i wonder if that's what slowed him down...who knows. as the others have said, kids do things in there own time. does your neice walk around furniture and things? ------------- http://www.alternatickers.com">

yup she holds onto it and takes a few steps around it but alays drops to her bum after just a few minutes like she is exhausted (poor wee thing)- i think she is ok it just seems to me that it's all such an effort for her which is the opposite of other kids I know, they all seem bursting with energy, so I guess I am just concerned for her cos it seems so hard for her to do. ------------- Mrs Frantic Baby Maddisyn born 28 Sept 2006 http://lilypie.com">

I have 3 yr old twin niece and nephew. My nephew starting walking 2 days before his first birthday. My niece was still not walking at 18 months but it seemed to us more like she was to scared to let go and take the steps by herself. One day when my mother and I were babysitting we managed to entice her using the remote that she really wanted and when she realised that she could do it on her own, she hasn't stopped!! Paris never rolled or crawled - she sat early, at about 5 months she could sit unassisted and was great - you could stick her to play and know that when you came back she'd still be there. she got to 11 months and just started bum shuffling.
Through alot of work with daycare and at home we started getting her to learn all the stuff she'd missed out - because it is important for them to learn to crawl.. even if they have missed it, because it teaches the two sides of the brain to link or work together of something.. i forget, anyway.. she stood up at the furniture at about 13 months, then learnt to roll at 14months, crawled at 14months and finally started walking at around 16 months. so no, i think if they get to over 2 yrs then they may have a look at doing something, but if bubs gets around other ways and is otherwise growing and developing well, there's no much prob. just like some kids get teeth early, or some have heaps of hair..it's all different and down to genetics and parenting and the child themself. For me, paris started late-ish with walking crawling etc, and didn't get teeth till 11 months, but had, and still has, masses of hair for her age, she never had the physical side of things, so while she was busy sitting, she learnt to talk really well, and leanrt to sit and figure things out. Ayja, learnt to roll pretty early on, learnt to crawl about 7 months i think, and is walking around with things and will now walk if you hold her hands (only started in teh last week), she has an ok amount of hair, still more than some kids, but not as much as her sister... but still, as yet, at 12 and a half months of age, she has NOOOOOOO teeth. i can see the cheeky thing there in her gums, but will they cut thru, no way! Her talking has taken alot longer than paris, but i thinks she's about normal for a kids her age, with a few clear words, some other ones that sound a bit like words, and she definately knows how to get across what she likes, hates, and what she WANTS RIGHT NOW!! Also, it's good to remember that boys and girls tend to develop differently - read any of Miriam sotppards books and they have tables about the ways girls and boys learn and do things differently. her complete baby and child care book is great and very practical. alot of boys tend to take a long time to catch up with girls with their language skills.. typical really, girls just like to yap.. maybe they get it from their mums. ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

yeah, its apparently the order that they develop rather than the age thats important
Caitlyn had 5 teeth by the age of six months( tho they didnt come in the right order) she walked at 9months talked in 4word sentences at 12months had an attitude from birth liked to embarrass me from well the time she saw it embarrassed me.... my sister didnt walk till 2and a half, didnt clap till 2 and didnt talk till bout 2 and a half (shes special needs) but u know what, unless they do have a learning disability they will do it-we spend so long willing to walk and talk-and spend the rest of their life wishing theyd sit down and shutup! lol |

Roksana, you make me feel a lot better. At our playgroup all these kids are rolling around with their teeth, and Hannah just sits there playing quietly. She has no teeth, only rolls tummy to back as she hates being on her tummy so who knows when she will learn to crawl! But she has ben sitting unsupported since 4 months. Kinds sounds like Paris. Oh cool...I was wondering about Hannah....since they are at the same age.....
I am glad that Zaara is not the only lazy kid...lol. Zaara loves sitting down and playing with her toys. Loves watching the disney shows like rollie Pollie Oliie, bear in the big blue house (all the other programs are just not interesting). She likes being on her tummy and pushes her bum up and moves her legs....but no crawling!!! She goes 360 degrees tho on her tummy!! Lol She talks alot...in her own language tho....
