Do you need a brand new matress for a baby ??
I have brought a second hand cot (which passed all the safety standards etc) and I have been told many times you need a new matress ... which i will do... but why ? whats the REAL rational behind this ?? does a new matress really lower the risk of SIDS ... its it a consumer ploy ?? is a new matress cover not sufficent ? Im finding it really hard to gather the facts... any ideas appreciated... thanks |

I'm sure there are valid reasons they recommend a new mattress - if its been in a house where people smoke it'll affect the baby, etc. Personally I was only given a certain amount of money to buy stuff and when I got the cot a near new mattress came with it so thats what I used with Jake and this baby too probably. I used a bassinet mattress that had been used by my cousins baby too. In both cases I was confident they hadn't smoked and I used a brandnew woolrest my mum and dad brought for me.

Personally I would say a mattress cover is sufficient especially if the mattress is in good condition.
I got a mattress with the second hand cot and it had obviously been covered - not a mark on it. I've heard you should buy new but never actually seen it linked to any studies or anything. ETA: I didn't even use a cover - apart from a woollen blanket - and my daughter survived  -------------

i think its BS persoanlly...like a lot of things you get told.........i put Ty in a 50yr old crib that has been handed down and got foam cut to fit in...made sure there was no gaps then made sure it was good for new borns which it was....then i got 2nd hand cot and they gave us mattress that had only been used once which was obvious...i put a wet protector over the mattress then sheet.......i would be concerend about soiled mattresses more then anything......like bobbie said...matress cover of it would be ideal ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

I bought a cot second hand off trademe and it came with a mattress. I meant to change it for a new one, but it looked brand new and my mum told me I would be silly to spend money on a new one when there was nothing wrong with the one I had. So consequently I still have the second hand one and it is about to be handed down to DD. ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

I'm guessing that because the cause of SIDS is not yet known (except for suffocation) 'they' have to give us preventative measures based on statistics - one of those measures being having a clean dry mattress from a smokefree environment (new or not).

The theory is that the mattress absorbs all the gas that is breathed out and that gas + the chemicals in the mattress can increase the SIDs risk. Jim Sprott is the big proponent of this theory and has developed the plastic (and very noisy) mattress covers.
We bought a second hand one but it had only been used for a month. We initially covered it, being anxious parents but it was so blardy noisy we quickly removed it. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

I've also heard that now you shouldn't use the plastic mattress covers, as they don't "breath" and babies can overheat. We got one for the bassinet as it was 2nd hand and then decided the plastic cover was too noisy and then heard about the "breathing" thing, so ended up buying a new mattress, which wasn't too expensive for a bassinet.
