Everything that was on the programme was so true.
These days kids (and some parents!) need to harden up more! I loved growing up in the 80's - who knows how our kids are gonna look back on their childhoods!?

hehehe, I loved the bit about commas, digger digger digger, commas ....   It's so true - I'm a typical female and just need to learn to use full stops! DH reckons I'm not bad when giving DS directions (tend to give clear, direct instructions) but when it comes to our adult conversation I'm a shocker for including the twenty commas lol - so he just tunes out and ignores me .

Oh, and I wish we lived in Dunners so we could send DS to that awesome childcare centre - weren't the kids on bikes having the best time?

LOL, me too! That place looked great! See they have a 2 year waiting list though! I wish there was something like that up here where I could send DD. She would love it!

I thought the show was fantastic. I totally agree with everything he said - except maybe putting glue on the top lip (joke)

It was hilarious....now I don't feel bad about sending my child outside to amuse herself & to keep her out of my hair.

& proud to add that I have an old fashioned trampoline she could hurt herself on but we've had it two years ...so far so good LMAO

I recorded it too - love Latta. Warning he can be very blue with his language if you go to one of his seminars - but very, very funny and practical. Good article by him in the Listener too and we have his books.

Maybe now I'll have a few less people question why I encourage my boys to play league - and even coach one of them!

I was thinking last night, I wonder if we have such an obesity problem in part because kids aren't encouraged to use their bodies so they get to teenagers/adults and just aren't physically confident.

When I have kids I think I'll really struggle to let them take lots of risks - after ttc for 2 and a half years and losing 2 to MC I think it'll be hard to let them hurt themselves. But I'm so, so willing to work on that. And I loved last night the girls in the Dunedin preschool. They are so cool zipping around on the bikes and chucking themselves into everything. Loved it.

I cant remember what he said exactly, but there was something that made me think about all the fun times in my childhood, and how most of it was when i was "let free".

Things like going up to the bush behind us and making forts, going out for bike rides until 8pm, going up the road to a girls house and spending the whole day there, even though Mum didnt know her Mum.

i missed the show, really wanted to watch it tho. Unfortunately sometimes we just cant parent like it used to be done. there are a lot more families where both parents work and kids are with carers who have to follow guidelines not always set down by them. i think too that we dont know our neighbours or neighbourhood as much as when i was a little girl either. in the street where i grew up my mum personally knew the mums of the kids i played with, the lady in the back, across the road, down the corner, if she couldnt find us someone would know where we had gone... i just am not that familiar with my area to allow my kids to roam freely (not that i would at 5 and 4 anyway).

Might have to watch it on TV on Demand.

There was a great summary in the SST of the main points from his book on mums and sons. Basically giving tips for how to interact to help them develop their imagination and sense of fun and exploration. He seems really common sense - all good!

I didn't watch it - forgot about it.

But I do think parents wrap their kids up in cotton wool a bit much. Daniel plays outside every day (unless its pissing down) by himself. I leave the door open, shut the gates and let him go for his life. I've made sure there aren't any major hazards but I know my friend who has a girl of a similar age would never do that. I just keep an ear out listening to what hes doing. He trips up and hurts himself on the concrete on ocassions but never anything major. But he plays with his car and the pram and pushes that around and goes and plays in the sandpit and comes back a right mess but hes had so much fun doing it.

My dh had a giggle about that too - but i said i do that to him not the kids (well maybe to the 16 year old) Must just be a womans thing.

Caitlynsmygirl (kelly) I too watched coldcase -very good shame its the last one. Dh grrrr was asking me right at the end what was happening - it was a 2 episode one so I didn't want to explain espec when wanting to watch the end.

DS 16 was there watching it too and made a good comment - they have everything at home now so they don't need to go anywhere - as in entertainment - DVD, computers, video games even down to the mini playground in the back yard. At his age I was away for the whole day (and night) my parents must ofhad it easy LOL Although my brother was more of a home person he still was out working on cars and stuff.

And proud to say we have an old Super tramp (don't make them like they use to this tramp I grew up on ) and its got no mats or net and guess what - NONE of my kids have had an accident on it.

I am very much into making kids be kids and I don't think there was anything he said that I disagreed with - maybe park by themselves but if the older two took the younger one I wouldn't have a problem... safer in numbers.

oops...just had help typing, as I was saying, I like the fact that she can amuse herself and I don't have to be there all the time helping her to do things!
