I have really dry skin and people have told me to take evening primrose oil. It is getting worse as the pregnancy gets further. I havent taken any form of skin supplement since I have been pregnant but I was wondering if I could take something? My skin is dry and I am worried taht teh dryness will make stretchmarks even worse as there wont be much elasticity in teh skin, but is it safe ot take? Or is there something similar I can take if it is not?
Thanks

I have read that evening primrose oil can help ripen the cervix in later pregnancy for labour but i dont know what it could do at your stage now?

I've heard of the cervix ripening (it's often used as a natural way to induce labour and isn't recommended for use during pregnancy) - and also raspberry leaf tea for cervix ripening - but I haven't heard of what to take for dry skin during pregnancy. Have you tried rubbing on something like lipobase repair or really heavy duty moisturisers? You could also change the soap you use in the bath/shower to one that has a high fat content or glycerin (sometimes soap can remove the sebum from your skin, making it drier still) - oh, and put moituriser on while your skin is still wet.

your post got my curiosity going (that and I didn't want to do the work I should be doing right now) so I had a bit of a search for homeopathic treatments for dry skin during pregnancy. I found this one on the University of Maryland Medical Centre site - http://www.umm.edu/altmed/ConsHerbs/Marshmallowch.html
I was surprised to learn that there was a plant called the marshmallow - however, if you can find marshmallow root at a health store, it may be worth a try. It's listed as safe for pregnancy - and is also good for colds and sore throats.

aaargh - five sites say it is safe and then another ten say it isn't. Refer back to my original post about moisturisers..and forget about the marshmallow root.

I have been using lipobase but it seems to last a few hours and then my skin is dry again - i mean it is better than opther moisturisers but still not 100% ideal.
he he yeah confusing isnt it! ah well if it cant absolutely be said to be safe then I think I will give it a miss for now and maybe start takign it in the last month as recommended...
marshmellow eh? interesting! I didnt know that either!

Try the Hemp moisturiser from the Body Shop, I used to have REALLY bad dry skin too, and it worked wonders.

Possibly if your skin is that dry you need nourishment and "lubing" from the inside and outside?I get dry skin and try and keep up essential fats etc.

Efanatal is great and is for pregnancy...has EPO and other oils and stuff in it..get it from the health shops. Also I have been using a bit of baby oil in the shower on my warm skin and it seems to have a better effect than layering moisturiser on - your skin absorbs it better after showers (altho I do that was well).

I was taking EPO capsules orally when I fell pregnant and was assured by my midwife that they would be safe to keep taking. According to her it is inserting them vaginally that can ripen the cervix, so is not reccomended to do before 36 weeks.

I have been recommended fish oil capsules to help with healthly skin, hair, nails during pregnancy. Health shops should be able to help.

Fish oil and omega 3 are good for mostly the same things too I think?

My friend Jo who had her baby about 18months ago was put on quite high doses of EPO to help out with depression while she was pregnant. Helped heaps. She still takes them now.
