OK I am being a cheap skate! Does anyone have a Consumer Magazine membership? They did a report in June this year called "Appliance life expectancy" and I just want to know how long they stated a digital camera should last.
Our 5yr old camera has packed a sad and according to the lawyer who has a segment on "Good Morning" you have recourse to get it fixed/replaced under the Consumer Guarantees Act if it breaks within a reasonable time. So I want to know if the camera should have lasted linger than it has. I really don't want to fork out for a new one! ------------- Lindsey

Digital cameras, camcorders Economic life: 2-8 years. Life expectancy: 5-10 years, depending on purchase price. Repair: Only for newer high-value models. Not worth considering for older models - upgrade to a newer one. Advances in technology and lower production costs are making even the more-recent models obsolete. Our answers use the following definitions: Economic life - according to manufacturers. This is the age at which, if the appliance breaks down, replacement is likely to be more economic than repair. To gather this information we asked 95 manufacturers and distributors about the useful life of 32 different appliances. Life expectancy - in our view. This means how long you should expect the appliance to last, given reasonable use and perhaps some repair. We have used the results from our annual reliability surveys to help provide some of the answers (there were 8425 responses to the 2009 survey). We also look at what the product does.
