I have a friend who has been in labor since about 12 last night. Contractions are steady and she thinks her waters have let go a little bit (she keeps wetting herself). At one point contractions were 3 mins apart but not to painful. They settled down and now are regular and more painful. Should the midwife have been to check her out already? In my opinion yes especially as she is a first time mum had no care until she was 30+ weeks pregnant. Had a diabetes scare and hasn't had a very nice pregnancy at all. So just wanted to know your opinions

| Depends on what contact she has had with the MW. I laboured for a few hours at home and MW didn't come and see me but then she didn't know I was in labour lol.. some MWs are more relaxed than others. If she wants her MW to visit her and check on progress or address any concerns she should voice it to her MW and ask her to come |

If she has had a hard pg then her mw would tell her to go into the hospital to be monitered.
Has she rung the mw? Or why has she not gone to the hospital she is going to give birth at, you don't need your mw to tell you to go there, you can go there yourself. Maybe you could take her if she has not one to do that for her. |

It really depends. I had an easy pregnancy so mw didn't come to see me until 5.30 in the evening after I rung her at 9am then she went home expecting me to call at 3am but I managed to last until 6am which she was surprised at! I was managing ok until about 6am then the pain just felt like it was too much and I couldn't handle it. She came round and told me to keep labouring at home. How is your friend feeling? If she is worried at all then she should call her midwife and ask her to come and check her or meet her at the hospital / birth centre.
She may be feeling OK about contining to labour at home for the moment? Either way if she has any doubts, concerns then she should definitely discuss them with her midwife. Just out of curiosity - why did she not have any ante-natal care until 30+ weeks? ------------- DS 8 DD 6 DS 4 DD 2 |

i agree with If she wants the midwife to come to ask her or if shes worried just go to the hospital. with 1 of mine I went into labour at 5pm and didnt get my midwife to come and 'check me' till about 11am the next day. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

mummydee she was overseas until she was told to come home if she wanted to have baby here as she had gestational diabetes and they wouldn't let her fly any later than she did. She had scans and obviously the diabetes test but not care like we get here iykwim.
She's stressing as that's what she does about everything but seemed ok when we last texted was going to try sleep as she hasn't had any overnight. She won't fight for herself if she does want mw to come and Mum will be telling her it's all good (or something like that anyway) but I just thought that the mw should check her on her own back especially as she has to travel to see her she not just in the same town. I guess I'm just a little worried as I think my friend has been a little careless re the pregnancy and I want it all to go ok. Oh well will wait to hear some more news I guess |

| I had gestational diabetes with my last 2 & was monitered closley. Her m/w will do what is needed. You are a good friend. |

I laboured at home for a long time (not hours), my midwife visited 4? times, and the back up midwife once, and I had 3 internals done, one trip up to hospital for a shot of pethidine to help me get a few hours sleep and to be monitored. I would have gone nuts at the hospital - basically it was ring midwife, she asked if I wanted to see her now or was when she finished ok, I said yep, and I rang her every time something changed. It depends what part of the country you are in, whether the hospital can take labouring women, and what sort of case load the MW has at the time - but she will get whatever support is needed. ------------- http://www.babysfirstsite.com">

I laboured at home for 12+hrs, and my mw didn't come to check. I rang her about midday and said I was in labour and she said she would give me a ring the next day to see how I was getting on!
I thought it was pretty normal to labour at home until contractions were about a minute apart or you felt like you wanted to go to hosp. If her waters are breaking, then there is a time limit until she needs to start antibiotics. | I have found out a bit more info and am a bit befuzzled. Her waters broke last night before 12am she has been having contractions since then and mw told her she won't be coming until baby is nearly here as she doesn't want to drive to her for some reason. Is that not just a little bit wrong? |

Are you sure you are getting the full story or just bits of it?
To me if she wants her mw she should ask and the mw should come and if she cant then the backup should. If neither of those can she should just go to hospital and be seen |
