Jake has become very curious about genitals and I'm wondering how much to tell him. At present i answer his questions honestly, but try not to add too much. problem is, he keeps coming back with stuff that obviously mean he doesn't get it.
Like "mummy, why do i have a penis" "cause you are a boy" "okay...i do wees with it eh?" "yip". "girls do wees with a vagina: "yip" "why do boys have a penis and girls have a vagina?' "for making babies when you are big" "Oh" then he tells people he has a baby in his tummy which will come out when he's a big boy - maybe 7. not entirely sure if I should correct him, or just wait. Anyway, for those of you with older kids, when did you tell them about "the birds and the bees"? and for those of you whose kids aren't at that stage, how much DO they know? |

Not speaking from experience with own kids but when we were growing up we had a book called http://www.whitcoulls.co.nz/book/where-did-i-come-from/1419376/ - where did I come from I found I never needed to ask mum about the birds and the bees (that I remember anyway) as from an early age we had this book to read. Not saying its an easy way out but might be something to have around and introduce I remember reading it as a kid The same author also does a book called what's happening to me which we read when growing up as well about our bodies etc. Might save answering some of those difficult questions. I havent really had the sex talk with Janaya, some boy in her class beat us to it.
She came home from school one day and said "I know what sex is" You do? I said. "Yes" What is sex then? "Its when a boy and a girl roll around without clothes on the bed" "oh" I said. She does know about babies and how they are born, and all that sort of thing. I just dont know if a 6 year old should be knowing about sex?! |

Kaiz, I found out about sex in exactly the same way when I was 6 or 7! I remember I came home and told my 5 year old sister all about it too  My poor mother!

My mum and dad were open with me from the start. They kept it age-appropriate but I knew how it all went. Mum drew little diagrams and very patiently answered all the oddball qs we threw at her then very carefully binned said diagram haha anyway I don't even wana think about telling Jake about sex  but yeah thats how my parents did it. They figured if we were old enough to ask questions we were old enough to get some answers. It was always age appropriate though!-------------

| One of my friends has an almost 5 year old and shes very open about the sex thing. As far as her daughter is concerned sex is something that mummys and daddys do together to love each other and they do it naked. I'd be happy for Daniel to know that kinda thing at that age |

I have a 10 year old girl who knows exactly wat sex is. This mostly came about when we were talking about periods a couple of years ago. (I wanted her prepared as I got mine at 9) She started asking questions about why she would get it and so I told her that if that month your not pregnant you get your period etc. She already knew that a man and lady that loved each other had big naked cuddles lol, but last year she wanted real answers and had real questions so I told her and answered her questions. And kinda off topic really but she is super excited thats shes growing up cause shes got 4 hairs under her arms, god I found that hard not to laugh at, lol. Our 7 year old girl however doesnt know the nitty gritty of sex just the usual naked cuddle thing, although she does know where babies come out of cause shes seen her brothers come out.

I think you should correct him. If he has some information and some incorrect information that he is curious about, then I think he is ready to know the truth.
You don't have to give him the nitty gritties of sex, but maybe let him know about "special cuddles" and that dad gives mum a seed and mum grows the baby inside her tummy. Perhaps you could let him know thats another special use for a penis :o) I think its quite good to let your children know "sutff" before they hear it (and possibly incorrectly) from other kids.
