I am now 4 days overdue.. just got home from seeing the hospital midwife this morning and they have booked me in for an induction next tuesday night..
I really dont want to have an induction.. i dont like the idea of drugs to make you deliver and I have all these emotions and overwhelming feelings of faliure. I really feel the pressure to get this baby out naturally now more than ever.... I have tried it all....hot hot chilli.....sex.... rasberry leaf tea....fresh pineapple by the kilo... bouncing on a swiss ball.... and nothing yet... Im aware of the process of an induction and understand it can make labour a lot longer and harder as well... Can anyone share their experiences of an induction, how it was physically and emotionally for you... how long etc... thanks in advance ! |

| i definetly haven't heard of it being longer exept for one time, I was in labour for only about 4 1/2 - 5 1/2 hours once the drugs kicked in. If anything it makes it faster which is why its more painful because you honestly just have contraction on top of contraction. Being that your over due though you may not need to go as far as the drip, the gel or having your waters broken might do the trick and nethier contain drugs just a large almost croquet hook and artifical hormones. I would recommend how ever if it does get tough for you to have an epidural and I personally wouldn't recommend the gas i found it very hard and only have one friend who has liked it out of about 8. there's also a good chance you may still go into labour before the date of induction it happens all the time, the hospital just like to be safe and make sure everyones aware that you will be in for an induction on that day if you haven't had bubs before. A friend of mine whos now pregnant with her 3rd had both of her girls the day before she was meant to be induced. |

I was induced, I was only 4 days over but had reduced fluid around baby.
Personally, I loved it. I went in at 7am, had the gel at 8am, by 9.15am I started feeling contractions, started the syntocin drip at 2.30pm and DD was born at 5.35pm although I think she was ready about an hour before that as her heart rate started dipping and until I turned over, I didn't feel the urge to push (but did once I had turned). I pushed for 25 mins. I even had an epidural which I understand can slow things down, but not for me. I know there are other threads about this on here and lots of experiences are actually really positive.

bun_in_the_oven, my last to were induced early for medical reasons, but I am not going into that.
The funny thing is with my first I was booked for an induction but went into labour at 3am, lol. I was 2 weeks o/d. My SIL was booked for an induction, & I told her I bet she would go into labour before, & she did. I worked in a woman hospital, & 9 times out of 10 the women booked for induction would come in, in labour, lol. So there is every chance you may be in labour & not need it, but if you do it is not a bad thing. Oh & we tried everything too, but baby was to comfortable, but all good in the end  so enjoy thoes curries & sex now, while you can, hee hee

Very true, I went into labour on the day I arranged to be induced in 4 days time :) Must have been the long car trip! -------------

CuriousG, when I had my first induction they used cream, then the last 1 they inserted something up there, think it was a slow release thing, I prefered the first 1.

if you dont want to be induced then dont. if you arent sure of your dates then the baby may just not be ready anyway... you can instead of being induced just get your fluid checked and the placenta and if it is all healthy then wait...(but you will have to put up with the hospital staff pressuring you). i have been induced three times with three diff outcomes - a ventouse, a very cool labouring in the water out in five pushes birth, and an emergency c section. a lot depends on how ready the baby is to come, how well you cope with the drugs and what drugs/methods end up being used. but it doesnt have to be a horrible experience... (but once you get the synto then it is a lot harder to go natural and labour standing or in diff positions as they want to monitor more closely. ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

I am feeling you on this one!!!
Im waiting to make an appointment for next week to be induced and as much as I would like things to run their natural course, I also don't want to wait too long, have just had my 2nd s&s but still no signs she is ready to come out still!! I used the search function in forum to read other stories and no one else really seemed to have problems which put my mind at ease. Hopefully bubs makes an appearance this weekend!! Otherwise I hope the induction goes well for you  -------------

I was induced at 38 weeks and really enjoyed it! I went in at 7.30am had gel, nothing happened, more gel at 2.30pm, by 6.00 pm nothing was happening so I sent DH home, 8.00pm I started to get cramps, 10.00pm I started to get contractions, 10.45 my waters broke naturally and then she was born at 1.31am! The insertion of the gel did hurt, but I went through Labour on just gas which I found worked really well. My mw was adament that she didn't want them to break my waters straight away -not sure why but I wonder if this helped as I had heard induced labours can be nastier than a normal labour ------------- http://pregnancy.baby-gaga.com/">  http://lilypie.com">

I was induced too and I loved it :) TBH it was a bit more 'medical' than I had planned but by then I really didn't care, I just zoned out. I had the gel at 8pm, had cramps all night, then gel again at 8am, more cramps. Got my waters broken at noon, dialated like a champ, then little (well, big 9lb 4oz) Jody made her grand entrance at 5:30pm. So totally overwhelming right now I know. I spent a lot of the last 2 weeks in tears because I couldn't get my baby to engage. That is no one's fault. Your baby is just so warm and cozy in your tum -------------

Good luck! My baby was a stubborn bugger. I tried it all and was induced at 40+5. It took another 4 days and a threat of a csection for him to make his appearance. He was just really not ready to come out but his placenta was showing signs of breaking down. Most people, it works well and works quickly. However, just be prepared that maybe it won't happen straight away. Apparently the docs and MWs say it is "normal" for an induction to take 3 days to work. No one told me that. I won't lie, it was emotionally incredibly hard but that's cos it took so long. ------------- Mum to two wee boys |

I was induced at 41+3 and it was excellent. My daughter had stopped growing so they wanted her out. They broke my waters, I had a walk, then they put the drip in. Immediately contractions started and came hard and fast...as in 60 secs apart or less. 2 hours and 36 minutes later it was time to push and 11 mins after that Gabrielle was born. It was very painful of course but I managed it with no pain relief and would almost be happy to repeat it if i knew a second induction would lead to a similar birth. ------------- Mummy to Gabrielle and Ashley |

| i too was induced with my two week overdue boy. after a check my midwife decided to break my waters an d go from there. i was told to take a walk and come back in either an hour, or when labour was established. got to the lift, went down and came back up again immediately and was 3 cm dialated. no other drugs needed to stimulate labour. Jake was born 5 hours later. |

I found out I was going to be induced due to gestational diabetes, it was so not what I had expected and at first I felt a lot of dissapointment that I would not get to go through the whole excitement of "going into labour" but by the time it came for me to be induced (38.5 weeks) I had come to terms with the fact that this was going to be the way "we" did it.
I was given a bishops score of 1 I think and then I had the gel at 10pm and then again sometime later and had cramps on & off over night but no real progression. 9am the next morning they said I was 1cm dialated and that they were going to break my waters, this was done a 9.30am and they said I could expect my baby to arrive in approx 12 hours, 15 minutes later I was having contraction on top of contraction and was holding my baby girl less than 4 hours later! All in all it was a great experience and one I know I will have to go through again as my chances of getting GD again are very high, and this does not bother me at all now. The drip thing in my hand and having my waters broken are the thing that have stuck with me as being the unpleasants. Five hours later bubs arrived. You will be great no matter how your baby arrives! It is not as scary as you think, and seeing your beautiful baby makes it all worthwhile.
I was really mad that I had to be induced. I really wanted to wait and do things without intervention but my MW said she would only let me go to 42 weeks and if I wanted to wait any longer I would have to find someone else to deliver my baby. I managed to have my induction date pushed out as far as possible, and in those last two weeks I tried EVERYTHING. Sometimes twice.
TBH I was really pissed off about it and felt backed into a corner, like I had no choice. I was totally pressured into it but I live in a small town where maternity care options are really limited and it was either do things their way or birth somewhere else.
My MW tried her best to keep the intervention to a minimum (I really, really didn't want a c-section) so we staggered out the different stages of gel, drip and waters broken in hope that my body would kick in and take over, but my girl was (and still is) really stubborn, and we had the full works over a 12 hour period, with 2 hours pushing.
It took a lot of digging for me to turn it around emotionally, but we stayed out of the operating room which was my biggest fear.
It was not the birth I planned but it was the birth I got, and it was not as bad as I had imagined. For me attitude played a big part and once I got over myself it was fine.
No matter how you go into labour the incredible feeling of giving birth is the same, and I actually can't wait to do it again! (crazy, right!)

I'm going to give the other side, I had read all the stories on here and was happy that there was so positive experiences so was happy to be induced, I had my waters broken 41+5 then given the drip 12 hrs later, sufice to say my son was born by emergency c-section 12 hrs after that as the little toad was not wanting to come out and turned posterior during labour and there was meconium in my waters. I truely think that it wasn't time for him to come out, and if I had refused to let them break my waters and had just waited a few days he might have been born naturally.
However I also know that as he was my first one and I was so anxious for him to come out that I would have always chosen to try to hurry it up. Anyway sorry to be a downer but if you don't want to be induced you are within your rights to wait, they will just monitor you really closely. **hugs** being over due sucks.
I was almost 2 weeks over due to the day by the time my son made his arrival! I went and saw the OB and he chatted to me about the risks etc of going over due, when i saw him I was about a week over I think, and in the end we decided we would induce me once the 2 weeks was up, as they dont realllyyy like you going over 42 weeks due to lack of fluid and placenta starting to not work so well yadda yadda, but he also said to me that some women can go over 2 weeks and if the baby is fine the fluid is fine and placenta is fine, then its safe to let baby come on its own. So like Bizzy said, if you dont want to be induced then dont let them pressure you, if you want to give baby another week and a bit to arrive then go for it, providing all is good in there etc. My boy decided he would come on his own in the end, i was due 10th June 08 and induction was booked for 24th June, but my waters broke 21st June a few days after the induction was booked. ------------- |

I was disappointed that it wasn't spontaneous and as exciting as going to labour on my own,though I wouldn't have it any other way, Charlie was born 6 hours later and 15 mins of pushing I have learnt nothing ever really goes to plan (especially with babies!), though go with it and it will all turn our ok! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

my induction wasnt good. Had gel, then waters broken then drip which resulted in being to intense for baby and she got fetal distress (heartrate was way to high) I got an infection it was ass to be honest after being in labour for 14 hours had emergency c-sec. With my last baby she was finally born 13 days overdue. They wouldnt induce me again because of c-sec scar so we played the waiting game with daily monitoring, had lots of strech and sweeps the week I finally went into labour.

Must say that I loved my induction!
Was induced at 38 weeks due to high BP - only needed 1 lot of gel at 9am - 30 mins of monitoring, then a walk - waters broken at 12.30 (most painful thing ever!) - baby born at 6.50pm. I loved it and am actually really nervous about having to do it naturally at home  -------------

i loved my induction. bubs was not interested in coming out so at 9 days OD they used the gel at 9am didnt do a hell of a lot, still managable till about midnight bubs had flipped posterior a few days before so i got an epidural. the gave me a drip of cytocin at 6am next morning i was only 2cm. he was born just after 10 with 2 pushes, no tearing/stitches etc... i lost a lot of blood after but they gave me more cytocin to contract the uterus, i walked out of hospital the day i gave birth and went out to see friends the next day cos i felt fine :)
i was all about going naturel too, i tried everything rasberry leaf tea, curry, swiss ball, osteopath, accupuncture (from 37 weeks) but in the end i was more desperate to have him come out instead of him getting to big a risk a c-section which i point blank refused unless it was absolute life and death. -------------

I was another one that loved my inductions!! I was induced at 9 days over with DS, it was hard work, waters broken and then drip started 6 hours later. I pushed for 2hrs but managed to get him out all fine. When it came time to have DD I wanted an induction!! I liked the way that you had a schedule of the way things worked, natural labour seemed very disorganised to me... My induction with DD was great - 4 hours of active labour and 4 minutes of pushing - no drugs other than induction drugs and no stitiches or anything.
I know I got off lightly, but think you just need to realise that induction is not that scary - make sure you go over and over what happens with your MW - you can still call the shots to a degree, make sure they let you walk around a little (mine happily took off monitors for 10 minutes every hour). The other thing I did was pushed for a scan at 10 days over - they found low waters and so I was induced next day, but otherwise I would have waited a few more days. It was reassuring to know that we were doing the right thing. Good Luck, and I hope everything goes the way you want it!! ------------- Mum to two beautiful kids

I was induced at 42 weeks and 2 days later (after only being in established labour for 3 hours but early onset labour for 33 ) I had an emergency c-section. While I don't rate my experience highly I am lucky we both survived. Even if it's not the 'experience' you have planned, at the end of the day as long as your baby and you are healthy and happy it will be worth it
