I lived in Korea for a number of years and my friend just posted up pics of her son's first birthday. Because Korea traditionally had a high rate of infant mortality getting to your first birthday is a big deal ergo there's a big party.
The highlight of the party is whenlow table is brought out for the baby with several items on it which represent the path the child’s future life will take if she or he grabs it. Typically the following items are used. A pencil: Which means the child will be a scholarly academic. Money: Which means the child will be wealthy. A string: Which means the child will live a long life. A bowl of rice: Which means the child will have food and shelter. However, nowadays people have included new and modern items like the following: A microphone: Which means the child will be a singer A Mouse: Which means the child will be a computer genius! But you could really use anything signifcant to your family. Anyone else got any cool first birthday traditions. |

That's very cool! We didn't do anything as cool as that but we gave DD a touchy-feely book and wrote happy birthday from mummy and daddy in it, and are going to give her a special book each birthday so that looking back every year she'll have a book which represents what she was interested in when she was that age. Nice thing is that we'll be able to do this even when she's all grown up!
Another good idea I heard was to take a photo of your child next to something and/or or in the same place every birthday (e.g. next to a special tree, or a local landmark, or at the local park in front of the playground etc). You'd want to choose something that wasn't going to disappear though! ------------- Two little girls under 2!

Lol that could be quite entertaining!
A friend of min took a large peice of paper and stuck a photo of her son smack in the middle. She then had everybody at the 1st birthday write a wee message on it for her child, and stuck it in a frame to hang on his wall. I'm all for traditions.
We're not very original in our house. But each year we're going to buy Hannah a charm for her bracelet that represents a big moment in the past 12 months of her life. The first was a butterfly - representing new life. Her cake was also a butterfly. I also stole a neat idea off one of my lovely Jan 08 Mummies - we're going to take a family photo at 1:34pm on each of her birthdays (will do the same with subsequent children) to mark the time she was born. My Dad lives in the States, so we're hoping that he'll be here for each of her birthdays, too, since he made it for her birth and 1st birthday. That's probably my favourite tradition

Flake, that's why it's better if you can find one in a local park or somewhere public - but that's not quite as special as one at your house... ------------- Two little girls under 2!

Haven't written all the responses, but every year ,since her first birthday , I write a letter to Caitlyn on the eve of her birthday , it has bits about what she did that year etc etc , and I put a pic of her from that year in it , I have them all in a box and i'll give them to her when she turns 21 ....whether she likes it or not ..... -------------

Wow some neat ideas! We don't have any traditions or anything for the younger birthdays but since the older ones started school I have made a tradition of picking up the birthday boy/girl from school and taking them out to lunch just the two of us to somewhere of their choice. Today my eldest turned 12 and I am beginning to wonder if/when he will decide he doesn't want to go for lunch with his mum! -------------

I started a birthday notebook. The first entry I wrote a few notes about her first year, and what she was like on her first birthday (what she could do, what words she could say, her favourite foods/movies etc.)
I'm going to fill it in each year so that she can look back and see what her personality was like at each age. If that makes sense. I love reading about people's traditions  ------------- Chloe (4 years) and Oliver (3 years). |

We do the charm bracelet too - the first charm was apussy cat cos Gabrielle loves animals. Think her 2nd charm will be something to do with music or cooking.
Need a similar tradition to that for Tane though... ideas? We also have a notebook for each of the kidlets that I started writing in wehn I was pregnant, I write in it every few months and on bdays and christmas as well - the idea is that they will be given to them on their 21sts. |

I love the birth time photo idea, Charly! That would with DS although his first year would be missing but would stress if #2 was born at like 1.30am in the morning...not my best photo time
I am planning on doing the charm bracelet for a girl (stopping at 21). For DS we brought him a real tool box for his 1st birthday and we are planning on buying him a good quality tool every year until 21 so by the time he leaves home he will have a good basic tool box and won't need to steal DH's! -------------

DH bought some wines from 2007 to keep for Tom and will do the same for James. But not adding to them each year....at least I dont think we are
