Samantha is 4months old and we are now having huge problems with her going to sleep!
I still have to wrap her as she cannot go to sleep without being wrapped as she stimulates herself too much. Today we were fighting so much to go to sleep and i turned her on her tummy and out like a light. I have her head on the side but is there anything that I need to make sure that i do as well??? I have an angelcare monitor and have the movement monitor on as well just in case but i am very nervous and keep checking on her every 10minutes. I know that it is against plunket and all but i need some sanity. |

Angus has slept on his tummy since he was 2 months old. I also know how wrong they say it it, but i dont think he would sleep 10 hours at night like he does if he didnt. I dont wrap him, but find he can move around a bit so i have (hmm dont know what its called...) its like two triangles and piece in the middle holding them together and he sleeps in between them so he cant move too much.
Is Samantha strong enough to lift her head and turn it? As Angus turns from side to side... i have never had any trouble... i still check him often but think i would even if he was on his back... 
Oh and i tell Plunket he sleeps on his side... I know that he shouldnt be on his tummy, i dont need them to tell me a million times more. He is happy and has great sleeps thats whats important. -------------

thanks Manda for your advice. Well she lasted 1/2hour on her tummy then i just turned her on her side. But she is still asleep as that was her issue of not sleeping at all! She can lift her head but i am not sure whther she can turn her head. might give her a bit more tummy time to get her lifting her head to make it stronger.
LOL about Plunket as i so can hear them going on about it as soon as they arrive, whilst they are there and then when they leave! I have a wedge also and will make sure that i have it so that she cant move too much Thanks heaps |

I know people who have slept their babies on the tummy from birth....that was the only way they would settle, and they are fine! Some people are tummy sleepers! -------------

| Henry has slept on his tummy from 4wks old (i think it was 4wks anyway it may have been earlier) as that was the only way he would settle. We also had a angelcare monitor and his bassinet was beside me aswell. He still sleeps on his tummy now - even though he crawls and stands in his cot and lays himself down he still chooses his tummy. I am also one that didnt tell plunket (told them he slept on his side) which is so silly that they make us feel inadequete if we do things a certain way. I wont feel nearly as bad if this next babies settles better on their tummy and id like to think this time id be straight up with plunket |

I think the reason many babies change to sleeping on their tummy is because the are sick and tired of being on their back and want a change.
Arianne sleeps on her tummy well...she gets in the position as if she was crawling and she falls asleep with her bum up in the air...so cute. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

| i found henry sleeping sitting up the other day in his cot. He had flopped forward - head on his knees. It cant have been comfortable and since this was at 8pm i moved him because i didnt want him waking in the night lol. |

Tummy sleeping is the most natural way to sleep but unfortunately is one of the risk factors for cot death. Most babies sleep better on their tummy as they feel secure and snuggled in. As long as you don't meet any of the other risk factors ie smoking and you have the angelcare monitor you should be fine.
Don't worry about it, Plunket's job is to educate the masses but if you use the angelcare monitor then you're offsetting any risk. Babies need to sleep and you need sanity. My friend is an neonatal intensive care nurse and she tummy slept all her babes as that is what they do in the unit with the premmies because it is better for baby. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

wow thats really interesting crafty1. So most babies are more comfortable on their tummys. Interesting that neonatal intensive care sleeps them on their tummys. Do you know why its better for them? or is it just cuz their more comfortable?
Thank you so much for that response as now i dont feel guilty at all about sleeping henry on his tummy all this time. We have none of the other risk factors for cot death - no smoking, breastfeeding still and have used an angelcare monitor. I feel alot more at ease with the decision i made now. |

This is my boy! Its the only way he'll sleep during the day. I just pop him down on the floor in the lounge and keep an eye on him. He slept on his tummy at birthcare too. He was sleeping like this the first time plunket visited and she didn't have a problem with it At night though he's totally different and will sleep on his back fine. ------------- http://lilypie.com">  http://lilypie.com">

Well I'm naughty and go against plunkets rules... my boy has been tummy sleeping since about 2 weeks, but he did and can move his head around and lifts himself up no worries, even in his deepest sleep. He just hated being on his back, worked his way out of his swaddle and would donk himself in the head with his hands to keep himself awake... tummy fixes that issue (although today he is not happy on his tummy at all - well he wont sleep unless he's vertical so mmmm  )
