Hi everyone,

I started giving Ty solids yesterday, just 1 - 2 teaspoons a day. I'm giving him baby rice but seriously... its horrible! Haha I really don't know what I should be giving him first but baby rice is nothing to be very enthusiastic about! He's eating it fine, screwing his face up a bit (like you would if someone was trying to feed you soggy cardboard). It's what plunket recommended but what did you all start your bubs on? And how often is it ok to introduce a new flavour?

Thanks!!

My Callum hated baby rice too. I reckon it looks like wallpaper paste! I wouldn't eat it so don't blame him I started him on pureed pumpkin (butternut squash) and then pureed apple because that's what we had in the house at the time. I introduced a new food every few days - carrots, kumara, pears, banana, avacado, papaya were all a hit here.

I make up batches of stuff each week, or every few days, freeze in ice cube trays and then keep free-flow in the freezer. Banana, avacado and papaya (paw paw) are great coz you don't need to cook/puree them, you can just mash

I made my own baby rice with wholemeal rice, much sweeter & definitely a nicer texture.

Just ground up 2T which gives 1/4c & make this like porridge with 1c water & it keeps in the fridge for up to 72 hours

Then I just started adding pears to it & then a week later switched it out for apples. Only other baby food he's had is pumpkin.

But he has either porridge or pancakes with us in the morning & bits of what ever is going for dinner. I keep the mid day meal to the rice & fruit puree or pumpkin.

I didn't start solids here until 6 months old so have been able to do a mix of finger food & purees.

We started with pureed pear (apple did funny things to her poos, and the rice didn't really agree with her either) and squashed banana. Then pumkin and kumera, and introduced a new one every week or so.

I have also just started my baby on solids, and have found this website really helpful

I seem to be referencing it every other day at the moment.

We started on apple and pear, then introduced baby rice, at first he screwed his face up, so I added some pears or apple to it and made sure it was nice and warm, after that he LOVED it. So you could try that?

I started with pureed pears, then kumara and went from there.
I've only ever used the rice to thicken up fruit purees.

I tried all sorts of things, and noticed that my baby liked to change things often. Easy things are

avocado (very good first food due to vitamins and nutrients)
banana
pumpkin (very good first food too)
portridge (mixed with meat and vege then pureed)

I also tried ready food in supermarkets like Watties and Only Organic. My baby liked Only Organic and hated Watties. In the Organic range, she liked Wild Rice with Pumpkin, Pureed Pear.
